- From a galaxy far, far away comes the twenty-sixth stellar episode of Dear Dr. Fantasy, featuring the one and only @Bookborn! We discuss some of our favorite reads in speculative fiction and touch on other topics, such as SPFBO and self-publishing.
Great conversation! Will subscribe to Bookborn asap.
Awesome, and thank you, Carlos!
If you play D&D you HAVE to have A.P. pull Erikson's strings and get him to join in. Oh man that would make me giddy with excitement. My fave author playing the game that started his journey. Also Bookborn was great! She has a new subscriber
Awesome! You'll find some excellent content on her channel. It would be incredible to play D&D or GURPS with Erikson, Esslemont, and A.P.! I'm not sure they play any longer, but it's a great fantasy nonetheless.
Sup nerds! Love both your channels!
Thank you! All the best!
I've been looking forward to this all day, and it did not disappoint (had to deal with bureaucracy al morning). This episode is like the Reece's version of BookTube--two of my favorite channels that actually work well together. (Not sure if Bookborn will remember those commercials, lol.) I love that you both do video essays. I know how much time and thought and preparation goes into doing that. I'm someone who greatly appreciates them. And I agree, Philip--I think she's been incredibly brave for having some of the conversations our genre's community needs to have (about race and gender, to name a few). Also, Philip, it's not too surprising, but it sounds like we had identical experiences going into Fellowship (also my favorite of the three). I was filled with angst for months beforehand. My relief in seeing that first wide shot of the Shire is a moment I'll never forget.
Thanks for the mention of The Severing Son, Philip--I'm always so honored by your support. And thanks to Bookborn for her support of the self-pub community, as well. She didn't even mention the fund that she and her husband created to help other self-pub authors get off the ground, which I find amazingly gracious and generous of them. I've always put literacy at the top of my charitable giving. I'm wondering if they'll ever open theirs up to outside donation (I think it's been mentioned by them). I'll keep my ears open for that, and will be all-in if they do so. Great conversation, guys. And it lasted longer than a pack of Reece's!
Thanks, Vaughn! This might be the first time I’m part of a comparison to Reece’s, and I’m loving it! 😁 I think I might have gasped out loud when, watching Fellowship of the Ring on the big screen, I first saw the Shire, which was as close to a vision of my perfect Earthly paradise as I’ll ever see.
Thanks for the kind words Vaughn 🥰 I did look up the Reece's commercial you were referring too and it was an 80s commercial so FINE you guys are right, before my time (but just barely!)
I recently DNFed D&D after playing it for first time in my life this year 🙈. Maybe if I had Allen as a DM I’d not find the game so boring 😅.
I’m excited to watch the rest of this episode! I love Hillary’s channel!
I'm confident Allen would be the most entertaining DM in the universe! Cheers, Johanna!
As a D&D player since the 80’s, I’m almost certain you’d enjoy it with a *good* DM Johanna. It makes a world of difference.
@@MattonBooks That's great to hear!
Oh NOOO lol! Probably a group/DM situation. I'm convinced anyone can enjoy DnD but it def needs to be the right circumstances and with someone who knows how to be with new players so they don't get bogged down in the details.
@@MattonBooks I am still using brain space for a lot of Keep to the Borderlands we played it so much.
This was a great conversation and I appreciated getting to know @Bookborn much more. Thanks for both of your time!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Scotty!
I've loved listening to this conversation, so wholesome ❤️ I've also started giving self-published authors a chance ever since finding the Fantasy side of Booktube. Very glad I did, and now The Sword of Kaigen is also one of my favourites!
Can't wait to read your story, Philip! 🤗
Thank you! I am planning to release my first book in March -- that's the goal right now, anyway. I need to read Sword of Kaigen!
Great episode!
Bookborn has such a great channel and her content is so innovative.
I agree completely! She does some great work on her channel -- really enriching content for the community!
Thank you so much 🖤
Towards the end on the topic of ‘history of western fantasy…’ I need to go watch Bookborn’s video… but here is my pitch for another video that I would love to see: something like ‘the modern fantasy cannon as devolved by book tube ’ not a ‘best of’ or a top 10, but more like here are the series, authors, and influences that are being talked about, discussed, and form the modern core canon. Along with honorable mentions and and how different spheres of readers connect various books. I’m imagining sort of a star chart with different constellation groupings of related and connected works. I have my own thoughts on this but I’ve been piecing it together over the last few years w the help of all the wonderful booktubers.
Sounds like an excellent idea for a video, Nathan! There are people doing similar things on their channels, such as Library of a Viking. He makes a lot of those “Top fantasy books according to BookTubers” sorts of videos. Cheers!
The comment about how the LOTR movies cannot capture the ‘depth of reverence’ in the books puts into words for me something I’ve been pondering for a long time. So thank you! I’m a Harry Potter generation reader, but interestingly I read LOTR first and listened to the audiobooks on family road-trips even before I picked up HP as an 11 yr old. So this discussion resonates very much w me. Thanks all!
I’m glad that you connected with that comment, Nathan, and that you enjoyed the discussion. It sounds like you grew up with some fantastic stories!
Absolutely! Narnia, LOTR, Harry Potter all before I was a teenager.
I remember seeing Zack Argyle talk about D&D on a reddit thread when talking about his book, so fun to hear Bookborn also chat about it! Love playing TTRPGs, what a beautiful way of telling a story all together.
Very true! I bet they have a lot of fun playing D&D with their friends -- I sure did back in the day when I played. Cheers, Zachary!
I love Beowulf and have read it many times with many translations but every time I am smacked around again because we absolutely have not changed. It’s staggering. We have changed many things around us but at our cores, we are all still Beowulf in so many ways.
That is very true! For example, like the people of Beowulf’s time, we still wrestle with our mortality and how to make our lives meaningful. This is a fundamental aspect of humanity.
Exactly! Also, that description of the dragon coming down the mountain is just insanely beautiful. Art persists in if’s ability to move us even across millennia.
Loved Bookborn's opinions and take on books. I just subscribed to her channel and can't wait to watch more of her videos!
Awesome! I hope you’ll enjoy her videos - there’s a lot of thoughtful content there.
This entire video has been an utter delight to watch! Bookborn is one of my favourite creators here, her content is so unique and fun!
Hearing you guys talk about DnD makes me wish I had grown up when those games were still a lot more popular (insofar as they have ever been 'popular', you know? 🤣). I should just look into it now though, nothing holding me back, really!
And I love how you manage to sneak Malazan into every single episode, haha. Super eager to find out how Bookborn will feel about that series.
Also really enjoyed the part about selfpublishing again, always great to shine a light on the wonderful indie/selfpub community :)
Thanks for the great entertainment once again!! 🥰
Thank you, Esmay! I’m glad you enjoyed this episode of DDF - I certainly enjoyed the opportunity to chat with Bookborn, who is an insightful contributor to our community. I hope you’ll enjoy D&D if you give it a try!
Did not come here to better understand Beowulf; now I better understand Beowulf! Also, your insights into the world of self-pub are very accurate!
You never know what you’ll get on Dear Dr. Fantasy! 😁 I’m exploring self-published fantasy more and more and becoming more intrigued by what I see. There are exciting possibilities!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy there are! Also many pitfalls. Feel free to reach out if you want some do-nots to add to your to-dos.
@@joeberne1 Much appreciated!
I did not think I'd understand Beowulf more after this conversation either lol but yet here I am, much better as a result. Thanks Philip
Wonderful discussion! I think you're gonna love Dandelion Dynasty and Green Bone Saga, Philip. I am buddy reading Malazan with Bookborn so I'm sure we will both require your expertise when we are confused 😂😂
You’re always welcome to chat about Malazan with me, Kyle! My best wishes for the read!
Bookborn and Dr. Fantasy. What a great combo! Two smart and articulate booktubers in one video. Watching these adaptations have made me appreciate more and more just how amazing the LoTR movies are. I agree with Bookborn that the WOT was mostly terrible in season one although I still have hope for it. I thought the actors were good and I was on the fence about it overall until the terrible season finale. But there was enough good in it that I (probably naively) think season two will be better.
I actually thought the WoT adaptation had some mostly good episodes from episode 4 through episode 7. Episode 8 was an unmitigated disaster, unfortunately. However, like you, I’m leaving room for hope that season two will be an improvement. I’m glad you enjoyed the chat with Bookborn, Matt!
Me too, Matt, I'm always naive that it'll get better! I think episode 8 really killed it, but there were redeemable parts and I agree that actors were very good. Hoping the best for Season 2.
Another great episode. I definitely don't agree with everything Hillary says in her videos, but I commend her for being honest with her opinions and not being afraid to talk about controversial topics in fantasy literature. Her videos rock. Also I have book 1 of her husbands self-pub trilogy. Need to read it!
I hope to check out Zack's books someday too! And yours! All the best, Marco!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I hope so as well.
I loved Secrets of Droon and Jedi Apprentice as a kid!
The greater Star Wars universe of stories is incredibly vast, it seems. I love the films, but I’ve never ventured beyond them. Perhaps I’ll change that someday!
YESSS! Are you a 90s kid too lol
Very late nineties, but the books were still around in my library when I got old enough to appreciate them
BookTube plays… that would be so much fun, but quite the commitment. 😅
Great chat. Bookborn is one of those people that I come away from her videos thinking way too much about the topic. 😂
-T
She is excellent at getting us to think about things we should think about! All the best!
Yes Wild Sheep Chase! Philip if you've never read any Murakami I think you'd really appreciate his work. Kafka on the Shore is a good entry point and invites a lot of discussion. Thank you for all the content.
Thanks, Tanner! I’ll start with Kafka on the Shore. All the best!
Oohh another Sheep Chase fan! So few people have read that one. The themes of identity really spoke to me as a 17-year-old. I reread it in the last couple years and still appreciate it a whole lot.
@@Bookborn it’s not one of my favorite but I appreciate it. Was crushed when Liene and yourself didn’t enjoy Norwegian Wood but understood your gripes with it. Hope it didn’t put you off from reading more Murakami
I had never felt depressed reading an Abercrombie book until Wisdom of Crowds. I did not like how that one ended at all.
That was a tough ending, for sure.
I feel like they are all depressing at this point and I haven't even hit Age of Madness yet lol
Love that Bookborn plays roleplay games.
Same here! Yet another way in which she inspires!
Enjoyed this very much.
Sam gives back the ring, too. He and Bilbo are my favorite characters.
Philip, I can’t remember you ever discussing Gardner’s Grendel. I assume you’ve read it, and I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. (Actually, I’d especially like to hear you discussing it with Erikson, but that’s almost certainly asking too much.)
I have indeed read Grendel and would love to chat about it with Steven Erikson. I feel like it has come up in a chat with him, but probably off camera. At any rate, I’m confident it’s a book he appreciates and has thoughts about. I’m glad you enjoyed this conversation too!
Another triumphant episode!
Bookborn is such a great channel with very interesting videos.
There is a feminist retelling of Beowulf? Well, definitely learned something there. Also, I could listen to you for hours when you start reciting Beowulf. Wouldn't mind if you do the whole thing. But I probably should not encourage you as that might have other repercussions.😁
Thanks for episode 26, Philip!
OHHHH, I am so tempted to recite Beowulf for a video series! I've actually thought about it, but I'm not sure the RUclips algorithm would ever forgive me. Ha ha! The feminist Beowulf is by Maria Headley, and I very much want to check it out. Cheers, Angela!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Whaaat!!! Deprived by the algorithm of a whole video series where my favourite medievalist recites Beowulf.😢 Oh, the cruelties of BookTube!😫
Maria Headley seems to have written a new translation of Beowulf and a novel, The Mere Wife, inspired by Beowulf and especially by Grendel's mother as I just found out. That's two then for my tbr. If you ever pick up any of this Philip, I would be very interested what the Beowulf expert makes of it.
@@DoUnicornsRead Sounds like some potential for a future chat!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Hm, chat with you about a feminist Beowulf retelling? Deal!😁
@@DoUnicornsRead Yay!
This was a really fun chat. 🥰
I’m happy you enjoyed it, Chadia!
You know how sometimes there is a popular work that you just don't understand why its so popular? Well for me thats Greenbone Saga, I just don't get it. It's the most aggressively average book I have ever read. Which is a shame cause having heard Fonda Lee interviewed she seems so nice and I wanted to like her book. Guess its proves I at least still have a personal taste and not just a lemming for hype haha. I haven't read Dandelion Dynasty but I did enjoy Ken Liu's The Paper Menagerie quite a bit, especially the title piece, it's moving and beautiful and only the second written work to make me cry(Where the Red Fern Grows when I was in sixth grade being the other.) Great interview as always Philip, enjoy the holidays!
Thanks, Clayton! I'm curious to see how I'll find The Green Bone Saga. While it's very popular on this platform, I've encountered a few people, like you, who did not resonate with it so much. But that's how stories and people are, I think, and that's okay. All the best!
It feels almost impossible not to cry while reading the Paper Menagerie. It's such a moving story
@@Bookborn Yeah it really is absolutely beautiful. For me it really hit me cause my mother died in 2005. Even without the similar personal connection to that story specifically it probably would have gotten me but given the similarity I stood no chance.
Obi Wan Kenobi is also my favourite Star Wars character.
That's because you have excellent taste!
Mine is Anakin
Excellent taste!
Heck yeah! Secrets of Droon shoutout!
You never know what sort of shoutouts you’ll get around here! 😁
Hi 👋 great video!! 🎥⚔️📽
Thanks so much, Safina! Happy reading to you!
I've been playing D&D for over 40 years. It's the greatest game ever. I would love to see Philip trying this out. Need any advice let me know 😁
Thanks, Jarrod! I’m pretty rusty, so I’m open to advice if we ever do play!
I love LoTR books more than movies too!!! Mostly for Frodo and Faramir who are incredible in the books😅
Since I grew up on LOTR, nothing compares to the books for me, but I do love Jackson’s adaptation. Cheers, Gayane!
A booktuber D&D game? 😲 Damn, I’m sure you have more than enough people who’d love to play, but add me to that list. I’m like you Philip, I started with AD&D (1st edition) back in the 80’s, and own 5th edition now. Allen should make a channel and put the games online! 😀
We’re not exactly sure it will happen, but one thing we’re very sure of is that Allen will be the perfect BookTube DM! Cheers, Matt!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy Just the energy and understanding of story he brings to the table will make for a great game. 😀👌🏻
I am curious if you, Dr. Chase, have any plans to use your interviews as published scholarship? As a fellow college professor, I know the pressure to get published.
I don’t plan to, but I also work at a community college, where there is less need to publish (though many do). Everything I do here is for the love of fantasy, though I learn a lot in the process. Cheers!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I work at a small faith-based liberal arts university where scholarship is not the main focus. Teaching is King! I enjoy your reviews.
@@jimave Thanks so much! I agree about teaching - it’s what gets me up in the morning.
You have the right face for a Jedi 😂
Ha ha! I've always wanted to be one, so that works!
Philip have you ever read I Am Legend? Or anything by Richard Matheson in general?
I haven’t, I’m afraid. Would you recommend I Am Legend?
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I would. It's a pioneer of the post-apocalyptic genre, and the author is one of Stephen King's favorites. The book is under 200 pages yet very thematically rich. It's a contender for my favorite book because the content really strikes home, it's probably my favorite depiction of loneliness in a story.
@@trill_nathan Sounds cool - thanks!
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy No problem! By the way, I just finished watching the video. I love Dreams of the Dying so much and I'm really glad you did that interview with the author. The afterword of the book is what incited me to try therapy for the first time.
@@trill_nathan That’s fantastic, Nathan! Some of my loved ones have benefited tremendously from therapy. I’m a firm believer in its importance. My best wishes to you!
:D
Thank you, Diego!
