I can see why this novel got the backlash that it did. This man was exposing literally all of the world leaders and their manipulation tactics. Dictators didn’t want their subjects to get their hands on this piece of artwork and wise up. Brilliant.

He was born in 1921, served in the RAF through 6 years of war,and was the sole presenter of the longest running programme in the world. The Sky at Night. He had a sickly childhood, was mostly home schooled or self-taught, drew maps of the moon for the lunar landers, and only missed 1 episode in nearly 60 years and sadly died after his last broadcast.😢

To someone who knows Russian history, this reads like a chronicle of events that actually took place between 1917 and 1950 in Soviet Union
Old major: original idea behind communism/Karl Marx
    Snowball: Leo Trotskyy
    Napoleon: Joseph Stalin
    Pigs: senior party officials
    Squealer: Soviet propaganda
    Dogs: KGB (secret soviet police)
    Jones: last russian emperor
Mollie: small Russian aristocracy and other wealthy casts that fled after the revolution
Muriel: intelligent professions in Soviet Union (doctors, teachers etc.)
Benjamin: older generations who witnessed the days of empire, conscious of the truth but too wise and too hopeless to share it
Clover and Boxer: urban inhabitants of the lowest cast representing the bulk of Soviet labour force, i.e. factory workers. Boxer, in particular, embodies the Stakhanov movement of 1930s, along with some other historical phenomena
Moses: the church, first banned by the bolsheviks but then reinstated by Stalin as an additional propaganda tool
Hens and cows: Soviet villagers and farmers
Sheep: common party supporters (and its lowest members), in particular the so called "komsomol" and other collective movements. In soviet union joining the communist party through its various branches was commonplace among young people, it was not only popular but often necessary as young people had to formally become members of the communist party to study, work etc.
Pilkington and Frederick: the leaders of Western governments, Frederick representing Hitler
The windmill: industrialisation in the Soviet Union from 1920 to 1940
Rebellion: the Bolshevik revolution of 1917
Jones' failed attempted to regain control of the farm after expulsion: a series of conflicts between 1918 and 1922 between Bolsheviks and the Red army (called "reds" in Russian) and the supporters of the former tsarist regime who were backed by several Western governments ("whites")
The protest of the hens and the confiscation of their eggs: collectivisation policies of late 1920s - early 1930 by which wheat was forcibly removed from farmers, which caused nationwide hunger and culminated with the Ukrainian "Holodomor" of 1932-1933
Frederick's invasion: World War 2, to which Russian historical tradition refers to as "The great patriotic war". Frederick (Hitler) is first an ally and trade partner of Napoleon (Stalin), then the invasion begins
Boxer's slaughtering: Boxer also represent the common folk whose bravery and sacrifice were largely the reason Soviet Union won WW2. After the soldiers came back (especially those who had been held as captives by Germany and its allies), many were sent off to concentration camps deep in Russia by the stalinist regime instead of being rewarded for their courage. A broader interpretation is also possible whereby Boxer represents all the common folk, many of whom were straunch supporters of communism and Stalin, who were repressed by the KGB between 1930 and 1940.

"To someone who knows Russian history"
You make it sound like you are revealing your own great insight into the novel, when of course it has been recognised since the moment Orwell tried to get it published that it was a satire on Russia. No-one wanted to upset the alliance with Stalin while the war was still underway so the book wasn't published until 1945.

It is totally cool that someone understands what Orwell was talking about here. He had close personal and first-hand knowledge of the Marxist aims and goals (Orwell was one of the first UK Communist Party Members) and what tactics they used and are still using to subvert, and corrupt, even to this day. One of my all-time favorite Doublespeak quotes is Hillary's, "The people have spoken."

      One mistake here.
Benjamin isn't just the older generation. Benjamin is the representation of the educated middle class who are uninterested in politics. They know exactly what the pigs do and why they do it. But they are not interested in politics and getting involved in politics. They just want to grill and be alone. Only issue is that politics care about you regardless if you want to or not. They only get involved into politics once they get affected, but by that point it is way to late as the wheels has been in motion for a long time. Benjamin shares a bond with Boxer because both of them are workers and work with each other a lot.

@@MrbonesAndSource it certainly is an allegory to how revolution itself operates in any Country, but you can’t deny how it does so by literally taking Russia and Communism as the perfect example, are you kidding me? Orwell is well aware of what he was doing and you can see how he takes Stalin’s Communist Russia as a basis even in 1984. Yes, you’re right it IS an allegory for the general state of the world, but it obviously tells you this by specifically satirizing Russia and its own revolution.

Its a shame that they rarely write books like this now. The gentle pace and the use of English is superbe, the story is thought provoking and the narration is first class. These days its all rush and instant excitement. (not that there is anything wrong with that as well).

I wish I had discovered Orwell much earlier in my life. I might not have understood 1984 until.I waa older but I think I would have enjoyed Animal. Even if I wouldn't have seen the parallels with Stalin and Lenin I think the story is written is such a straightforward way that it can be enjoyed on a surface level. One will immediately sympathize with the animals who toil away on the farm and are ill treated by their owner. When they revolt against their abuser and install a new system which they will no longer be beasts of burden, however it quickly descends into something less than idyllic and begins to resemble their previous owner.
