    Very useful video. Thanks for uploading. When I was young in the Corps, I used to be able to do 20+ without really thinking about it. Completely different story now that I'm 57, I can only get 14-16 on a good day and I've been training for the last two years to even get there. Hoping to be able to do 20 again before I hit 60.
    ***UPDATE*** I turned 58 a couple of weeks ago (9/6/2022). I can do 21 now. Way ahead of schedule. Thanks for the tips. 👍

    do the max amount of pull ups you can the wait an hour or so then do it again, or let’s say you want to do 20 pull ups, whenever you leave your door do 1 or 2 there so it adds up to 20 at the end of the fay

    Great content for building new leaders, a bit of history, way back when I was in, (have been out for 40 years now) the single most effective way to get promoted and or be able to go to schools, was to be a PT Stud! With a consistent 300+ PT score you could be mediocre in so many other areas. My Platoon disliked the Pull up work out on Platoon PT days, I would take the platoon to the Horizontal ladders, and 2 times a week we spent 1 1/2 hours working to exhaustion, then move right in to pull ups, We did not understand Off time for muscles to rebuild, it was just about work! The goal was always to have a platoon that could max 40 pull-ups. And yes the old saying of Drinking to 5:00 am, and then a 6:00 am PT formation was true, and that transcended all the enlisted ranks from Top (1st Sgt) to Private no body! Great content, the Army share has changed

    I can knock out 10 pull-ups fairly easy, do pull ups to warm up before every workout. I’d like to be able to get 15-20 with minimal effort

    About 2 weeks ago I was approached by my new CO and asked if I wanted to go to ranger school in January... like 2 weeks from now. I of course said yes and have been scrounging to get everything off my packing list together. I was just about to get a rangerpack and I saw that you had uploaded this video, I watched it when it was newly posted "1 hour ago" and thought to myself. Nah I shouldn't comment, probably won't win. But my wife is pushing me to, thankfully I have her. Hoping to knock out ranger school then middle of next year go to SFRE then on to SFAS. Best wishes, thanks for all the tips.

    I was just wondering ab this. My ship date for the Marine corps got pushed waaay back. But at 210 i can pump out a good ten pull ups. I'll do a set of five pull ups on anything I can pull up on. At the end of the day I'd have don't at least 35-50 reps total

  • @deangolberry3837
    @deangolberry3837 2 года назад +3

    As far how to incorporate these...I usually do about 5 or 6 sets of 5 pull ups and as they become more difficult i use a band. Would it be best to do specific workouts after this, so for example the negatives after my set since im already tired? Or would this be its own workout and then after 2weeks or so check my max rep count? Thank you and appreciate the informational video.

    • @GrittySoldier
      @GrittySoldier  2 года назад +2

      Absolutely. Your ideas are a great way to see and document improvement. Negatives are meant to help you to reach failure and to build endurance. You’ll see tons of progress if you do negatives often.

    I realize this is probably not the right section because you are working on Pull-Ups. But my son just enlisted in the army on Wednesday and is headed off to boot camp December 27th. To the point he's doing well with everything but his 5-mile run do you have a training program to help with that? MOS is airborne infantry and then he gets shipped off for ranger training. Also I was curious to know during the Land navigation course do they give you starting coordinates or do you have to come up with those on your own? He's a talented young man physically fit a 139 GT score but is straight out of high school and needs a lot of knowledge for his military training any help is much appreciated.

    • @GrittySoldier
      @GrittySoldier  2 года назад

      This program will square him away for all the physical challenges he will face at RASP: grittysoldier.com/collections/fitness-programs/products/13-week-ranger-school-fitness-program
      Also land of all the points will be given to have it will just be up to him to be able to find the points. If he’s a smart guy I’m sure he’ll have no issues with that. A lot of it really does come down to just being physically prepared.

    I attended Airborne School in May-June 1974 and I have no idea what they’re doing these days. Anyway, in my time, the standard for being admitted to the school was 6 pull-ups. 6 pull-ups were required every day in Ground Week and then 7 in Tower Week. The standard was to pull yours chin up over the bar X# of times, starting from a dead hang and with no swaying or kicking, etc. I was certainly not The Pull-up King of Fort Benning then and I’m not The Pull-Up King of Taiwan now! Having said that, I prepped for this event by pulling my shoulders/chest to the bar, rather than just clearing it with the chin. I trained myself to the point that I could do about 10 very good pull-ups and then a few awful ones at the end (kicking, swaying, whatever it took to get over the bar). I had no problems with this event and in fact, just once a Blackhat didn’t count a pull-up (“one, two, two…”) and it was no biggie to still get my 6 or 7 that day since I’d trained for 10+.

    What I do that I find useful is you do your pull ups till failure then on that last one when you know you can't pull yourself back up there u hold yourself on the bar and hold the negative as long as you can

    For ranger school and or airborne, do you only use one grip for the pull-up or can you also incorporate the chin-up grip as well if you tire out on one or the other?

    Are you tested on chin ups or overhand pull-ups in the army? I’ve seen varying info

    • @GrittySoldier
      @GrittySoldier  2 года назад +4

      Depends. At Ranger it’s pull-ups. At airborne it was chin-ups when I went (like 10 years ago). But it’s best to just be good at both versions, as they are both seen as “testable” across the force.

    • @danielvillarreal6610

      @@GrittySoldier, if I recall my Guide to Airborne Students booklet correctly, the “Army word” for what I did in Airborne School (May-June 1974) was something like: pull-ups with the palms facing the face. As I recall, Big Army didn’t use the terms “chin-up” and “pull-up” back then. Go figure! :)
