In this video, we run two different experiments related to the encounter you have with the legendary Pokémon Eternatus, what the game does when you deliberately bring NO POKÉBALLS to the battle versus with Eternatus, as you are REQUIRED to capture it, and what happens if you fill your entire Pokémon storage with Pokémon prior to the forced capture!

I’m glad this vid is only 4:45, so many RUclipsrs would do the same thing but make it 20 minutes and spend the first 10 telling us to like and subscribe and the next 10 minutes talking about giveaways

Eternatus made the effort to travel to other regions. One by one, each region fell. Kanto, Unova, Johto, Alola.

Palkia and Dialga fought against Eternatus. *screen shows exactly that* Palkia gave in. Dialga, however, used his last trick: changing time. *very quick recap of what the text scripted but in reverse up until the point that the protagonist is about to ask to fight Leon, and then an exclamation mark appears above his head*

Not really since the 32nd box isn't *only* obtainable by doing this. You can get it, just not before this point in the game. 99% of people would probably have just avoided this video otherwise thinking "i already know how to do that"

I heard from a lot of people that the game softlocked if you didn’t have any box space left (and the usual game freak = lazy comments, etc.) Glad to see that wasn’t ever the case.
The people that did it hacked the game, probably via PKHex or so, to have all 32 boxes full before Eternatus, causing the softlock. Feels like a petty way to make the game look more bad.
Well they clearly were lazy if youre not some idiot that likes being lied to, but yeah, in this case they made a good job. finally.

We weren't lied to, we were told a half truth, the models of old pokemon weren't made completly from scratch but they aren't the same either, most models pre gen 8 had flat mouths, now they 3d. Have you ever tought that maybe the wild area isn't as good in the graphics because it would make worse an already big problem of lag when online? this isn't some 8 player smash, the game is constantly updating characters other people and camps in your game while updating pokemon and having the raids always visible

The feature to add more boxes after 1 is in all of them was added in Black and White, not X and Y.

Thank you so much for this, there has been videos that has been hacked to have the 32 boxes unlocked before eternatus, causing the game to really be softlocked, as a way to talk bad on the game. Glad you actually went through the thing personally and not caved in to what was presented before.
Though the box expansion thing started in Gen5 i believe.
I planned on releasing this video tomorrow but them videos spreading incorrect information made me want to hurry up and get it out today, I hope you enjoyed the video and found it informative

nothing happens, you just don't have it. Always works like that, the only time releasing will have any effect is HM users, unless gen 1 or 2.

Everyone is t in postgame at all, i guess. Turns out that 32nd box is simply unavailable until after catching eternatus. He actually says this in the video, but people seem to think that he got a box that you normally cant get at ALL.
Finally! The storage softlock has been busted! I knew they wouldnt have forgotten to add this.

I appreciate your hard work, Phil, but in this particular case, I believe you're wrong...
In the Alola games, we're given 8 Boxes to fill with Pokémon, and are given another 8 the first time the boxes have at least one Pokémon in them, up to a total of 32. But the 32nd box is only unlocked after obtaining Solgaleo/Lunala.
I honestly believe that's what's happening here. Eternatus isn't locked in a special box; the final box just happens to be unlocked with the capture of Eternatus, which is then deposited into the new box.
I think you've totally misunderstood what I said, I never said Eternatus is locked in a special box, just that the final box is unlocked after the battle

Well damn. You aren’t the only one. I was literally in the middle of a second play through to fight Eternatus without Pokéballs.
The greatest source of knowledge I received from this video is that is can go for a master dex (which I am so close to finishing) AND a shiny living dex in the SAME GAME, I never knew that thanks man :)
So what happens then if you fill box 32 after catching eternatus. Then catch the box legendary?
what if you fill up all boxes, including the 32nd, and caught the legendary doggo. It seems like it's apart of the story to catch it, so I imagine you have to.

It would probably just not let you catch it or it would treat it as if you KO'd it, which would just reset the fight since it's not like older games where you can permanently fail to catch a legendary.
Legendary doggos are afterstory so you can't catch it before getting Eternatus; 32nd box is not open before you caught Eternatus so the game will not be soft locked just like how they did in BW and XY

fun fact: you can unlock the secret box early through pokemon home. Just transfer a pokemon into the box to unlock it.

@@tommyboy161 Gigantimax Pokemon CAN escape from your one thrown ball, and they actually have a pretty low catch rate and can't end battle with a status condition (if they have one, it goes away when they run out of HP and explode). I once got into a 4-star Gigantimax Kingler (this one spawns at twice the usual rate for non-event Gigantimax battles and can be as low as 2 stars, and it is also able to spawn from multiple dens, not just the one), beat it first turn, and then watched it escape from a Quick Ball, which has a 5* modifier on the first turn.
So, regardless of whether you have no Pokeballs left, or filled up your entire PC with surplus Pokémon, Eternatus has to be caught no matter what. Cool how they made that a mandatory thing to progress with the story.

I wanted to see what would have happened if it failed, so I threw a dive ball. That’s why I now possess an Eternatus in a dive ball.
The PC box can hold up to 936 Pokémon, and there’s currently 890 Pokémon. Yep makes total sense to remove the National Dex. 🤣🤣

Good idea, though I can tell you without the video, because the battle is repeatable until you catch it (even if you knock it out), it just says "you are unable to catch this Pokémon" (not a direct quote) until you release something

Is Pokémon sword and shield worth it?
It's a lot of fun, it's flawed, but ultimately fun and that's what video games are meant to be, I'll have a review out soon, if you're a Pokémon fan I don't think you'll regret buying it, make sure you're informed about the flaws (lack of support for Pokémon outside the regional dex, performance issues) before you make a decision to buy it
Teresa M I agree with PDWinnall, I would look at the good and the bad and make an informed decision of your own about buying or not buying it. I think it was a good game, partially because it gave me something good to play on my switch other then Skyrim, but even with the lack of a national dex it was a good purchase. This was the first game that I was motivated to complete the Pokédex (theres 400 total Pokémon to catch) and now I’m trying to find shiny Pokémon.
if you're looking to have fun with yourself or with friends, i'd say yeah.(i'd wait for the price to drop because it shouldn't have been $60 in my opinion) but content wise, not really. but i would suggest make a well informed decision on your own.
I personally thought the game was good and deserved the title of a main line game, sure there are flaws but not enough to ruin the overall game. I'd give it an 8 out of 10 IMO, not the best but far from the worst.

I got a pokemon storage test that i havent been able to test out yet: what happens if you have full pokemon storage, send out a box full worth of pokemon to jobs, then fill your storage space up again?
The pokemon out on jobs wont have storage space to return to, so will you simply be unable to retrieve them from the jobs, or will you lose those pokemon for good?
Huh, interesting. Pokemon Black and White had something similar with you pretty much needing to catch Zekrom or Reshiram, depending on version. If I recall right, the only way to avoid catching the legendary right then and there is to fill your party and boxes. I don't know what happens if you don't have pokeballs (or run out while trying to catch it), but I assume that N would pretty much just tell you to go get more or something.

About the second experiment, what if you used Pokemon Home and filled box 32?

No one probably noticed this but there are 32 boxes not 31 normally! When he’s going through the boxes, if you slow it down there is a very clear editing cut between boxes 31 and 1 instead of the usual transition
We should appreciate that this guy could have ruined his chance to catch eternatus twice

Gamefreak has REALLY gotten smart about this to make sure people don't manage to find soft locks like in previous games
How about you use a pokemon save file editor and fill up box 32 before the eternatus fight

Ahh I see you are a man of culture.
There was a guy on twitter or something that hacked the game and gave himself *32* boxes before the fight, thus properly softlocking himself. He then proceeded to rant on twitter about how lazy GF is and how badly developed the game was. Obviously, since he hacked in the boxes, it doesn't turn out the way you've explained it in the video. There was one comment in the twitter thread that pointed out what actually happens, but it got lost in the sea of complainers and idiots.
I'm really thankful you went out of your way to make a video on this; this solution is actually quite robust: it negates the need for the player to have to refight Eternatus... AND it saves on development as there only needs to be a single possible cutscene for you having caught Eternatus (as opposed to having another possible scene where you killed it). It also allows NPCs in the game to acknowledge that you actually CAUGHT a legendary Pokemon, which adds to the story experience.
Whoever says that GF is lazy and not good at development is just covering their ears and drowning out any form of sound logic. People should've known GF would've put in a failsafe because they did the same thing in B/W, except they've improved upon their solution in SwSh.
It's still possibile to unlock 32th box if you redeem Mew in the pokemon plus and you have insanely all boxe full.

If the box was hacked open, then it will lead to that notorious softlock situation
And yes 32 box will be there forever after the Eternatus event
It would've been amazing if they made Hop complain about you being unable to catch in and then catch it himself. Then any time you battle him after this point he has Eternatus on his team with a really strong moveset.
It's be a good way to both avoid the soft lock and also punish players who've managed to (almost certainly) purposefully mess with the system.
Love the fixes they came up with though as both are really smart.
nah, it's always just an idiot prevention feature, so punishment makes no sense. It's a kid's game. Was there since black and white.
