    It's Martin Gore, the guitarist/synth player (the band's main songwriter since their 2nd album in '82) taking lead vocals on this track; as opposed to the regular lead singer Dave Gahan who you're more used to hearing. I think Dave is doing the low harmony with Martin taking the falsetto/high part alongside the main line.
    A lot of the more intricate stuff with the musical arrangements from this era would be down to Alan Wilder, who was with the band from '82-'95 and is also classically trained. He'd play both synth/piano and drums depending on what the song called for including in live performances.
    The other unusual thing with the synths production, is in the studio they would play them through a PA and then record the speakers to get the feeling of air moving like a guitar amp rather than directly into the desk.

    As someone who grew up with DM and '80s synth music in general, I recently spent some time checking out Taylor Swift to see what the fuss is all about. I think you're right that she (and a great deal of modern pop) is drawing from the 80's style. But where I found Swift's music lacking was that the music never really contributed. It was there to back the vocals -- and since Swift is a singer (albeit not really a great one) and the sole artist, most of her music (or at least what I've heard so far) is her singing. There are almost no instrumental breaks, and there's barely even a breath taken. Many of Swifts songs have enough interesting backing instrumentals that I find myself thinking "SHUT UP". She just can't stop singing. I suspect strongly this is a producer's choice -- she's the star, who cares about the music?

    • @markabusireactions
      @markabusireactions  7 месяцев назад +1

      It might be a case of single songwriter versus entire band. It’s much easier to write an instrumental section when you can collaborate on it with others.

    • @rick-says-hello-world
      @rick-says-hello-world 6 месяцев назад

      @@markabusireactions Totally agree on that. It isn't that Swift's music is bad, I just find it uninteresting -- but she's the product that needs to be played up. With a band you've got other members who are part of the "product", so they get to contribute.
      Best line in Bohemian Rhapsody is when Freddie Mercury talks about going solo and says something like "the musicians I hired did everything I told them to..." No pushback or collaboration means less interesting music.

    • @markabusireactions
      @markabusireactions  6 месяцев назад

      @@rick-says-hello-world I’m currently working on trying to make an album, and the thing I’m finding most difficult is putting myself in the shoes of other band members. Like, I can pop a simple 4/4 beat down and put the guitar and melody to it, but I’m really trying to think about how the drummer might wanna switch things up to make it interesting, and how the bass would then interact with that etc. just to try and make it so it isn’t so blatantly one guy in his bedroom kinda thing. And I’ll be honest, it’s fucking difficult, I can 100% see why her music is the way it is.

    The Taylor Swift references are what is bizarre about this reaction (thank you for reacting to DM, though). The music of Depeche Mode is so incalculably far beyond acts like Taylor Swift on every level, the frequent comparisons between the two are very strange. It's a bit like listening to Beethoven's 9th for the first time and pausing every few moments to extrapolate on how Vanilla Ice took what Beethoven was doing a bit further.
