Wow 25 years of teaching and a graduate of music school and no one ever explained this to me with such precision and simplicity. I was always able to feel it but now a way clearer explanation you've given me to pass along to my students! Thanks Jim!!!!
This was quite helpful! I've counted eighth note triplets as 1-trip-let, 2-trip-let and so on, but didn’t know how to count quarter note triplets. Thanks for this!
Hello and thank you from Dallas, TX. This is the 4th video I’ve watched, and the only one that enabled me to actually play a quarter note triplet. Thanks so much!
Thank you to much! I am in 8th grade and playing xylophone in my mb’s pit. I was have trouble with my tech’s brief explanation but you really got my back. Thanks again Mr. Jim 🥳
I can't believe how well you explained this!!! I have watched plenty of so called "very easy quarter note triplet tutorial" but was never able to understand the concept. Your video is very short BUT now I get it!! Thank you so much. What a talent you have to teach.. Thank you so much for this video
Thanks Jim, very useful (and precise)! - Do you have any tip and/or exercise to be able to keep the count/clapping steady on the main beat without getting thrown by the triplet feel? Eg. for piano or drumming. Thanks again!
Great - I agree with the other commenters - very clear (much more so than most others on youtube). If you were to make another video on this topic, would you be willing to demo it again and play an example of a phrase using 1/4 triplets on your sax? Thanks already for this though!
Im trying to learn the new tears of the kingdom theme tune (new zelda game) and part of the theme has minum triplets against quavers, it's really tricky and driving me nuts, so this video was so helpful :-)
Yes there's a difference. 3/4 time has 3 beats every measure. Quarter note triplet are 3 notes of equal value played over 2 beats. So you could play three quarter note triplets in 3/4 time and have 1 beat left over!
That's a more complex way to do it, as a guitarist I like things as simple as possible! A quarter note is 2 eighth notes so you basically play the first eighth note, miss the second and that's your first quarter note of the triplet done. Do this 3 times and that's the triplet done in perfect timing 😁
@@JimClarkSaxophonist MOST definitely. Though I've mastered it already (after a long time experimenting as a youth), this was the SIMPLEST and most effective explanation. It starts, like most musical concepts, with SIMPLICITY. EXCELLENT!
Feel is so important, so if you have that, it's a good start! Also, If you can play 8th note triplets - dividing each beat into three , that's the place to begin. Good luck!
incase ur talking about time signature 3 notes grouped = 2 beats in the practice ur learning to group together triplet quarters without it being directly on beat so you'll play 6 notes (2 triplet groups) 2+2=4

You are very welcome Matt!! And thanks for "passing it on" to your students.
3 minutes and my mind is blown. So much more efficient than what I was doing
Glad to hear it, Daylan! Please like and subscribe - I will be posting more...

@@dethbolt000 well said - yes!
Now I also really one-two one-two one-two learn how to play quarter note triplets
Is his voice so hoarse from playing the saxophone for like 40 years?
haha - that is very possible!
That's nice. Now please demonstrate with a real song. Tell us where the musician is actually using 1/4 note triplets. Help us hear the swtich.
I must be stupid. I watched at least 5 videos on quarter note triplet and I don't get. I just play it by feel.
Feel is so important, so if you have that, it's a good start! Also, If you can play 8th note triplets - dividing each beat into three , that's the place to begin. Good luck!
I just dont get how it adds to 4
incase ur talking about time signature
3 notes grouped = 2 beats
in the practice ur learning to group together triplet quarters without it being directly on beat
so you'll play 6 notes (2 triplet groups) 2+2=4
This shouldn't have worked as well as it did
HaHa - I'll take it. Thanks!
what kind of black magic is this???
Haha! I'll take that as a compliment, Luciano!
@@JimClarkSaxophonist indeed...it's an argentinean expresion ahhahahah
aren't these eight note triplets?
HI - we are using eighth note triplets and putting them in groups of 2 to create quarter note triplets.
