  • The Israel war is dividing Conservatives - with Rishi Sunak and David Cameron taking very different positions.
    Subscribe on RUclips: / @newstatesman
Escalations in the conflict between Iran and Israel are creating tensions between the Prime Minister and the Foreign Secretary. Israel has now retaliated with missile strikes for a violent attack by Iran, itself in retaliation for Israel's bombing of the Iranian consulate in Damascus.
George Eaton joins Anoosh Chakelian and Freddie Hayward on the New Statesman podcast to explain the two camps within the Conservative party and to explore how a difference of opinion over the Iran-Israel tensions is impacting British foreign and defence policy.

Kinda weird that the RAF didn't help out Iran's anti-air defences if our stance is actually "de-escalation." Seems an awful lot like we're picking a side and wouldn't mind if Israel started turning Iran into a bigger Gaza

Yeah, weird how Iran isn't very popular in the west... I wonder if it has anything to do with attacking western shipping, regularly calling for the destruction of the "west" and its replacement with a shia theocracy, its funding of pretty much every terrorist group under the sun as long as they kill westerners etc.
Really, its hard to imagine why Iran isnt popular lol.

      Lol what?
Gaza, with Iranian support, invaded Israel and raped and murdered over a thousand people, kidnapping hundreds more. Thats a declaration of war mate.
Gaza started a war, and now refuses to surrender and return the hostages, because a majority of Palestinians believe they're winning the war, so why stop fighting?
Iran on the other hand had a general assasinated - a general who proudly talked about supporting Gaza to attack Israel.
On what possible universe are these equivalent?

The weird thing about "conservatism" today is how international it has become. British conservatism in the past was much more unique to Britain, as conservatism should be because it's an instinct more than an ideology which has its place in different cultures and countries. However, you've got some on the right of the Tories today that just go along with international conservative "fashions" that often come from the US and then become part of the culture war via the internet. So the being incredibly pro Israel trend, to the point that no criticism is allowed, clearly comes from a subsection of the evangelical right in the US. But that mindset has spread and spread to the point that you've got Marine Le Pen in France being very pro Israel despite antisemitism traditionally being part of the French far right. The rise of the muslim population in the West, and especially Europe, has made Islamic culture the new main enemy and so the right naturally feel more sympathy for jews and Israel over muslims and muslim culture.
But it's amazing how so much of politics is basically like teenagers in school just wanting to join in with their friends rather than thinking critically about each issue for themselves. I would say some of the trans stuff was similar, with some people refusing to critically examine what was going on because they just didn't want to look like one of the bad guys to their progressive friends. Social media makes this all worse.

@@jonathandnicholson You can support Israel without being ideological about it. And some on the right are ideological about it. It's why Trump moved the US Embassy to Jerusalem. Simply to please the evangelicals that have weird Christian notions about the second coming of Christ and the need for a temple in Jerusalem for that to happen.

    • @jonathandnicholson
      @jonathandnicholson Месяц назад

@@khar12d8 Oh, so not all support of Israel is to do with Islam or cultural change in Europe. Also, a lot of Christians (regardless of denomination), Jews and Muslims believe in the Second/First/Second Coming (respectively) of the Messiah. Go read a book. Nor did I realise supporting Israel in the face of Hamas was ideological.

Many years ago I was a8r regular reader of the New Statesman. It was a an excellent political publication. Now it is best described as bland. Young correspondents with no real fire in their bellies. To say British politics is divided is ludicrous. For the first time I see the government and the opposition indistinguishable from each other. They both support and applaud the genocide in GAZA. They give support to Israel who are by any standards are practicing Na 14:45 14:45 14:45 ziism. To advocate increased war spending is ridiculous. Our country is on its knees. Millions in poverty Our health service is in crisis. All.public services are the same. We need public spending on a colloidal scale. Starmer.and Reeves lie through their teeth. ⁸ about lack of.money. There is all the money needed. Richard Murphy has set out a method of raising it by logical means. Labour was created to serve working people. Every membership card says it is democratic socialist. The New Statesman should urge Starmer to ditch neoliberalism. It is the road to Fascism

Should the Gold value for an ounce go any higher than $2,400 an ounce without Value Added Tax on it to 50% or 60% higher, or none at all now for greedy investors, instead of going back to $35 an ounce after the 1939-45 world War. Then, by the end of this century, 2024, there will be an unavoidable crash into depression after depression. The greedy wealthy can afford to invest in Gold. The tax-paying consumer public cannot, as they pay all the taxes while the wealthy dodge them. Leaving the politicians that follow to pay back the thirty-four trillion deficit the Americans and other outstanding deficits have now. Whatever? This could mean the end of biological humanity by a religious nuclear world war between Islam and Christians, as no proof exists of an afterlife.
Armageddon, no less within the seventh mass extinction of humanity. When our Earth is ruled by artificial Intelligence, The warning is plain. John Eric Hoare. #
