Adding on to this, if you focus the capital on ranged and the blacksmith/forge, build the experience shrine in Campus Frisii, and land-bridgewith two of your ships, you can have a very hard-hitting archer-based force pretty early on by bouncing units back-and-forth between those cities. Get a third city that's close (like Colonia Agrippa or Campus Chattii) and build the Morale shrine there and good-golly, your opponents have a lot to worry about from you.
The only downside to going to Britain is that the Romano British spawn in once the WRE has lost it's settlements in the region. So you'll end up facing them very early on if you go this route. So, I'd suggest taking Londinum at the start and building up a bit of a presence before capturing Eburacum.
Happy to see someone making content for one of my favorite factions in the series. Saxon's are a ton of fun especially with the Saxon Hearth Troops. One of the best infantry in the game.
I just finished my ERE campaign, Franks attacked me near Mediolanium, a city that I was sieging. (Heavy forrest map) I had an army of 3 archers, 4 lanciarii, 2 veteranii, and rest was Hippo-Toxotai. I all I did was dividing Army into three forces, Infantry group with archers up front, horse archer divided into two on far/extreme flanks. Let me tell you, Franks had the weakest cavalry units. They immediately charced on the archers, got annihilated on the first contact, routed ane I sent Horse archers slowly (forrest map) to pick up lonely infantry. And one time I bridge camped on Franks, lured frankish infantey encircled it with lanciatii, and still immediately lost somehow
Limited units but you have shield wall + ranged bonus. Add flanking cavalry and you could easily obliterate all the factions around you and take a big chunk of western Rome early in game
Hunters are surprisingly competent at melee, not much worse than levy spearmen. In a crisis you can use em fairly effectively as light shock infantry against weaker units
Saxons: the best faction and my number one favorite faction: sailing to England, attacking WRE from England is like attacking from the sky and raining down havoc all over the dying empire.
I wanted to play a Saxon campaign yesterday, and I found this... Good timing. RTW seems to still be played by many people. +1 subscriber, I love those kind of videos. Do you plan to make factions from others TW games ?
Thanks a lot man, glad you found it useful. I've made similar faction guides for Rome Total War base game and Medieval 2 Total War. I may make faction guides for other games in the future, but I am less familiar with the other games so I'm not sure
I started a new session of TW:BI, because earlier tries didn't work out,but with the Saxon I got it right. I succeeded in crushing bit by bit the nomad armies of the Slavs and the Huns, and then continued to aim for the richer West Roman region (France and Spain). After a while their eastern brothers became another target, and that's the actual situation. Do de Roman states also get nomadic (Western Rome only has the city of Rome left due to a revolt when they still had Salamanca as a second hub)?
I'm not currently doing lets plays (livestreams instead), I would probably leave it to vote but I do enjoy playing as the Romans a lot, but to be honest I enjoy all the factions in this game
I hate to disagree with Lugotorix but I have to on a couple of things here. The Levy Spearmen aren't a defensive unit at all; they're an offensive unit that has decent defense. Look at their stats: attack 7, missile 11, charge 4, defense 10. They also have light spears which gives them a bonus vs cavalry. Think of them as an oversized better-armed and armored skirmish unit that can hang in melee if need be. If you combine the level 3 barracks (and level 1 archery range) with a Sacred Circle of Ull, then retrain them in a town with a Sacred Circle of Wotan (this goes for archers, too) you end up with extremely potent ranged units quite early on (like Levy Spearmen and archers with 4 experience and gold/bronze missile attack/armour); 120 javvies will absolutely RUIN any unit's day. The shield wall formation just gives them a bit more defense but they are definitely NOT a defensive unit. The Saxon Keels on the other hand, are a defensive unit: attack 7 charge 4 defense 16. The Keels attack is the same as the Spearmen but the defense is much higher; put them in Shield Wall and that goes up higher. I suggest demolishing the Sacred Circle of Ull in Campus Saxones and replace it with one of Donar to give your units +2 morale, then pump out all your Keels, Axemen, Hearth Troops, and cavalry from here, then build Sacred Circles of Ull and Wotan in cities closer to your front so as you move your units from Vicus Saxones through Campi Chattii/Frisii and then to Augustae Treverorum/Vindelicorum, you can have most of your troops with 3 experience and at least bronze/bronze, with the increased morale bonus. Hunters are just broken under the Saxons (so are the Levy Spearmen). You can get Hunters to 4 Experience gold/bronze very early and just wreck opposing armies. The Saxon shrines are just ridiculous and they can make your armies very powerful very early. The Saxons are pretty darn potent.
@@BraydenLondon88 should be hard to die as the saxons right? franks, saxons, and goths are like the 3 top barbarian factions. they have good late game troops. I think the saxons are not as competent as the franks but they are still strong

I found it a better strategy to fight the Romans in continental Europe with the aim of raiding their large cities (population extermination) and then holding on to them. Better not do this right away either though. Wait several turns and use that time to build up a sufficient force and take rebel settlements. By the time you invade Roman territory with your forces, the Romans would be facing corruption and even rebellion.
19:00 But that's what the Saxons did, they stayed outside roman territory conquered their neighbour's land and forced them to migrate into the Roman empire.
the thing I don't like about barbarian invasion is that the shield wall formation is not that good, sometimes heavy cavalry can charge into my shield wall and get away pretty much unharmed. phalanx on the other hand, basically pierce through cavalry like paper.
Kevin Xu Testudo are practically immune to archer fire, especially low damage missiles, but a shield wall helps a little on the front, but still exposed to the sides and rear. Most cavalry should be able to penetrate either formation. Hope that clarifies a little more. Please someone correct me if I’m wrong lol
Shield-wall is great for a holding the enemy in place taking little damage while you flank around. It's a defensive maneuver not an offensive so don't be surprised if they don't do very much killing. You're meant to put your boys in the shield wall and then hit them from behind with the chosen axemen.
Shield Wall was not meant to hold off cavalry, it was meant to hold off infantry. The main reason for its existence is the tendency of the 'barbarians' to be undisciplined, as is well represented in RTW with the 'can charge without orders' clause many of the 'barbarian' units have. Shield Wall was a way to force these infantry units to stay in formation by locking their shields and preventing anyone from leaving the battle line. Of course as an added bonus it made the line very strong and tough to break by opposing infantry forces, initially the Roman infantry but later also the likes of the Viking warriors, when it was used by the Anglo-Saxons against them.
Your advice for the saxon is go Britain not South as you end up with a vertical empire yet with the franks you say go south to control Italy, why the difference?
With Roxolani I did opposite in very hard. Instead of going to Sassanids, sacking sarmatians, till Greece completely sacked. Get my horde to Rome, with boat (Adrian sea), sacked till I came back to Constantinople. So I had a huge wallet and was so easy I didn't had to battle, only auto resolve 🤣. Main thing is: wait first couple of turns in beginning, upgrade my 3 horses and 2 Spearman, then left Roxolani campus. Watch where huns, sarmatians and vandals walking. If they are 1 or 2 turns further, then they will leave you. Just don't come to close to sarmatians in the west of you in first turns, avoid those hordes. Then trade rights with northern factions.
@@hannibalburgers477 For barbarian invasions? I am not aware of any mods that does it. As for Rome TW itself, I highly recommend the mundus magnus map. It is very easy to implement into vanilla. Not only does it greatly increase settlement "density", it also stretches the map all the way to India
