  • “The Outlaw Josey Wales” (1976) is a western / Civil War era based film centered on a man who is hell-bent on vengeance against irregular Union militants (Red Legs) who murdered his family in cold blood. It was based on Forrest Carter’s 1972 novel, “The Rebel Outlaw: Josey Wales”, which was later published, and shown in the movie's opening credits, as “Gone to Texas”.
The main character in the film, Josey Wales, joins Quantrill's Raiders, which was a real Confederate guerrilla group during the American Civil War. At war’s end Wales refuses to give up and goes on the run as an outlaw that is pursued by one of his fellow riders turned Union scout and other Union forces including some of the very Red Legs who murdered his family.
It was directed by and starred Clint Eastwood who plays Josey Wales. Eastwood stars alongside Chief Dan George, Sondra Locke, Sam Bottoms, and Geraldine Keams.
With a budget of 3.7 million dollars the film did incredibly well at the box office making nearly 32 million.
In 1996, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress for being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".
