    I've many friends who often say me that in a tennis player is important just the strenght of the arms... I always try to explain how, contrary to how it seems, legs work is basic. Surely if a player has an excellent muscle in his(or her) arms, he(or she) is advantageous, but without the proper work of her legs she can push the ball at high level.

    Hi Patrick. I am an older club player who plays with a continental grip. Can I create top spin with a continental grip? How?

    • @Osnosis
      @Osnosis 2 года назад +1

      The grip is unrelated to spin; spin is entirely related to face angle and swing path. If you play with a semi-western/western grip the face is closed with the same swing as you would do with a continental grip. This why the semi-western forehand is done with the crooked elbow close to the torso and the ball is hit “down”, high off the bounce (the half-volley is very difficult for the western grip player). Also note the western grip forehand topspin clears the net with a high arc. The continental topspin forehand is more a flat arc, although it still has tremendous spin. The advantage of the high bounce topspin is that it is more difficult for,the receiving player to time the swing.

    • @janetburke7837

      @@Osnosis I have no clue what you just said in all thar explanation. I will ask someone else to translate.

    • @Osnosis
      @Osnosis 2 года назад +2

      @@janetburke7837 The short answer to your question is yes. The how is explained in my original answer. The angle of the racquet face RELATIVE to the flight of the incoming ball is what creates spin. The larger question is contact point and whether the spin drives the ball down before it crosses the net, or after. If you watch Nadal (the biggest spin producer of western grip players) you will notice the ball clears the net quite high. This isn't possible with a continental grip, but you can generate a flat shot with topspin by hit the ball at the height of its incoming post-bounce trajectory. Hope that helps.

      The Spanish way of tennis is to clear the next by a couple of feet and hitting with a lot of spin on the ground strokes. They also pride themselves on superior fitness and excellent footwork. Don't believe me look at all the Spaniards on the ATP Tour they all have excellent movement. The Nadal tennis academy doesn't teach to hit his same exact forehand and backhand however they do teach the Spanish style of tennis which is different than what's taught in the USA and other parts of the world. Nadal's academy as well as Jc Ferrero academy teach the modern game just like most academies around the world.

    • @bballah9969
      @bballah9969 2 года назад +1

      If you look at the world's greatest players particularly on the ATP tour, you see all the modern forehands hit with topspin to have margin for error when there hitting the ball hard. If you don't believe me watch any RUclips video of a court level view and you will see how much pop and spin, they get on the ball. If they didn't have any topspin, then the balls would be flat with no margin for error, however if the incoming shot presents itself to be hit flat then they will flatten the shot out a lil more then they usually do. Medvedev has very flat shots on both wings and is most likely the only player in the top fifty if not top one hundred that hits his ground strokes flat. If you look at Alcaraz and even Nadal they both hit with a lot of spin obviously Nadal has more spin then Alcaraz, but both of their shots are very safe, and you will also notice the next clearance is a couple of feet as well for added safety on the shot. This is the Spanish way tennis is taught in Spain.

      @@bballah9969 "however if the incoming shot presents itself to be hit flat then they will flatten the shot out a lil more then they usually do." Why? Is it because it is more difficult to impart topspin on an incoming flat ball vs an incoming tops in ball?

    What about using the wrist action to create more top spin?

    • @bballah9969
      @bballah9969 2 года назад +1

      The wrist is a natural byproduct of the kinetic chain when hitting the ball it's not forced it comes naturally as you come out of the slot on the forehand. Look up Rick Macci on here and watch his videos on the forehand very fundamentally sound and correct he talks about using the ground, as power is created from the ground up by the kinetic chain for spin and pop on the ground strokes. If you look at every single top professional they all use the kinetic chain on there ground strokes using a semi or open stance on the forehand along with a nice shoulder turn-uni turn.

  • @bournejason66
    @bournejason66 2 года назад +1

    The stay low advice is questionable. If you look at Zverev, Nadal, Carlos…, they stay low only at loading phase then push off ground and hit the ball, their head is higher than at the loading phase. It’s the same as in baseball, batter first bend the knees but at contact, they are no longer in the bending position. Unless the incoming ball is really low, if you unwind but still keep your knees bend, you’ll put a lot of stress on your knees.

    • @johnnyblackrants7625
      @johnnyblackrants7625 2 года назад

      I'm pretty sure "stay low" is just a cue for the exact loading you're talking about. The athlete in the video pushes off after loading low on almost every shot, and he doesn't correct it, and in fact routinely calls those shots "perfect."

    • @bournejason66
      @bournejason66 2 года назад +1

      @@johnnyblackrants7625 when she was about to hit, he kept saying stay low stay low, her head level ended up not moving higher. If you watch his previous video with this student, he instructed her to keep the head leveled through out the shot. And didn’t he ask her to push him with knee bend vs stand tall and told her to keep knee bend so she can deliver more power? The analogy of pushing someone and striking a ball is just wrong.

    • @SergeCeyral
      @SergeCeyral 2 года назад +3

      I agree with you (about the "staying low on legs" fact) . Another detail that puzzles me : when hitting the ball, the right shoulder stays completely behind, and the only arm moves forward... If you look at good top spin forehand players, the right hand (and entire right arm) pulls forward the right shoulder. That (good) young girl keeps her shoulders line absolutely parallel to the net, from the beginning of the shot to the end! (though she does better playing crosscourt shots)

      Sorry my man the only one here that is wrong is you lol! Who is going to know more you or him? This guy is an awesome player and coach and is well respected around the world his track record speaks for himself! The analogy of pushing someone and striking a ball is to show if you push someone when you're standing up erect you're not getting that power easily and efficiently compared as to when your low and your using your legs to create power from the ground up, this is called the kinetic chain look it up. All top touring pros use the kinetic chain on the ground strokes in order to get more pop and spin on the ball. This is the modern way of tennis played today this style never existed in the seventies or eighties as the grips and stance were different and players were taught to finish the stroke over the shoulder. This simply does not exist any more lol!
      If you look at a pro boxer is hitting you with an upper cut or a hook standing straight up? Of course not there knees are bent and there center of gravity is low there is a reason for this in order to move efficiently and to hit with massive power.

    • @bournejason66
      @bournejason66 2 года назад

      B Ballah just draw a line of Nadal or Alcaraz’s head when they are in loading phase, then draw another line of their head at contact, you’ll see the contact line is higher than at loading. Don’t believe me or Patrick, watch it yourself
