It may be my imagination, but unlike the Japanese voice-over, Petra in the English dub doesn't sound so much like she's struggling with the language. Here she speaks really fluidly, she just gets a few words/frases wrong
Not your imagination at all. Both versions chose a different approach to show the difficulties Petra has with Foddlan’s language. - grammar errors (that she corrects sometimes) and a fluent speech in English - lots of efforts and pauses to make a correct sentence in Japanese.
Erowax i think it’s just an audience thing and a logistical thing. I feel like an American audience is less inclined to enjoy a character who has difficultly expressing themself and also English (i think) is easier to learn than Japanese. It’s also because Petra is characterized as quite smart.
I also believe they didn't use the approach of struggling with an accent (which I think is more realistic coming from a foreigner) because people might call "racism".
