    • @ElevenEightNate

      I'm also in Oregon and it depends on your spot. 4-6' at PC or Shorties is totally different than 4-6' at the Cove. There's this culture in Oregon that perpetuates the mid-length life and I don't really get it. Other than the Cove, our waves are fast and steep beach break that are better suited for a shortboard or fish. Also, when it gets messy, your 60L of foam is just holding you back from duck diving, maneuverability, and generally making the most out of messy sections. It's also just a hazard to other people in the lineup.
      My advice: get a forward volume hybrid or fish that you can actually maneuver around. The flatter the rocker, the easier to paddle and faster it'll go. Just know you're going to have to take off later and steeper with shorter boards. Don't believe the mid-length hype, you'll never progress your turning, speed generation, etc. I'm 165lbs 6' and ride 30-32L depending on the shape. I've only been surfing for 4 years and never feel like I'm lacking any volume.

      Rusty helm yeah man, I took a 20 year hiatus from surfing.... military service, family, etc..anyway about a year ago I got back into surfing and actually give free and private lessons at a local surf shop. It’s amazing how my mind can still do everything but my body is like “who you kidding...?” It’s funny how nowadays I just like to cruise and I’m nowhere near as aggressive as I was years ago. I want to get more intermediate and improve but I'm struggling on a foam board because I can only surf white water as I can't get further out. • @piercerands3276

      Just remember, the board isn't everything. It sounds like you need to develop some skills, in terms of timing and positioning yourself up for "open face" waves. Go out in the morning, get in the lineup, and start failing. Commit to every wave you think you can catch. You'll eat it... a lot. But soon you'll get a feel for reading waves, knowing where the wave will break, and where to be. The first month you'll hate yourself, and then it'll click. You'll realize why surfers surf, and what feeling they're chasing. But I promise you that you can get a lot better on that soft top. I still keep a wave storm in my garage, and as long as I don't try to turn too hard on it, or try to go on a 6ft+ steep section, you can glide for days. If you really want a short board, grab a shitty fish or thruster off of craigslist for like 100 bucks, but it'll really only help you when you're able to take advantage of that soft top. Just check out JOB, man kills it surfing a fricking boogie board.

    Great video! I also agree that too much volume can hinder your progress. Based on your recommendations and my experience in the water, I decided to go for a 36liter fish. However, there are huge differences in fish design. So I can get a 6.6 or a 6.0 fish with 36 Liter. What would you recommend for a guy 181cm/80kg? Does height really play a role? My biggest issue right now is that I want to improve speed generation and turning...

    Define high performance and small wave boards objectively (without referring to experience or margin for error). This means talking dimensions. On the face of it there is very little difference between your HP and small wave board. Both 26L. Width and thickness almost identical. 4in diff in length. Hard for us to translate any of this info into what it means for us. Any rules of thumb? E,g. Volume should be 0.5x body weight in kg for an intermediate short board? I just made that up but is it fair?

    • @HowtoRip
      @HowtoRip  5 лет назад

      The best place to start is talking with your shaper about your individual needs, eg: wave type and size, skill level, height, weight, current board, etc...There are no set rules for everyone. Certainly small wave boards are shorter, flatter, wider and thicker than your standard performance board. Take a look at some of the pros boards dimensions, you can make comparisons between their board dimensions.

      swallow or squash is a good bet, go for an all-rounder board which will be slightly harder to get used to than a small wave or hybrid fish, but will enable you to shred when you get good enough without being limited by your board choice

      It is not a mistake. My normal shortboard is 26.3 litres in PU. My small wave board is 26.5litres but in Epoxy, which is more buoyant in nature. Is a 5'6 @ 26L appropriate size/volume for a beginner going on to intermediate surfer? I would have thought a slightly bigger 6'4 -6'8 egg shape with 40L+ would help the transition a little more, especially if you are coming down from a 7ft+ 50L+ minimal.

      No, that was just the dimensions of my boards, so you could see a comparison. Have you seen our video on 'Which Surfboards Should I Buy?". In that video Kale explains some volume recommendations, that would probably be a good start. Transitioning from your beginner board, you definitely want less volume, but how much exactly is hard to say. Talking with a shaper is very beneficial when deciding on dimensions, etc...

    Man your video is confusing. I found myself replaying because you are like, “hey you should defo not surf a high performance board”. You then cut to you jamming on waves and come back saying “but a short performance board is great!”.
    *Scratches head* aren’t they both short?
    Okay I get it now, there is another board type small wave board, which is slightly smaller, wider and volumstiouse right?
    Then you recommend Eproxy etc.. still with not a lot of info about the difference and why surfing an even smaller board is a better option.
    Me I got a 6’8 NSP and it makes duck diving hard still because of it’s volume. I’m thinking what you recommend may be better for me now...
