While fun to imagine and build such a system, chainless bikes will forever be made impractical. You really truly need to compartmentalize every stage for easy maintenance and repair. We complain about chains falling off, but what if one of the parts breaks here?
The bike is really a link that we are very easy to lose when riding a normal bike, now riding a 3-gear bicycle is very convenient without the need for oil. Too great
One of the things I love about your channel, along with alot the truck repair channels from Pakistan is that it's alot of hand work and repurposing. Its not just programing a CNC or water jet, or buying new parts, it's alot of actual fabrication. It's always very impressive to me.
@@SamS-vz3dm Porsches also do this in some of their upper tier sportscar engines, they eliminate the chains and belts and just use gears instead , this tech has its advantages otherwise a big engineering icon such as Porsche would not have used this
@@acswain6720 Cutting the frame to install an axle at 90 degrees to the direction of load weakens it massively. There's a reason you only saw it ridden over flat ground at the end. It's likely the bike would have been damaged by a pothole like the one we saw at the beginning. The right way to do this would be either belt drive (commercially available on folding bikes) or have the wheel on a rotating axle, with a bearing in the fork dropout and the wheel gear external to the frame. As a piece of art for a youtube video it is nice, and the gear spiders made from an old spring is ingenious (but with labour factored in it would be more cost effective to buy the gears or even make them from new material.)
@@acswain6720 Most of his weight is supported on the left side of the bike. I would've added support from the center of the middle gear back to the bike seat tube.
Mehn that was awesome 🙆🏾♂️! That was ingenious. I have never seen anything like that or as good as that. You should set up a factory 🏭 or something for this kind of stuff 😳
Very interesting and bold design of this bike. In mass production, the expensive replacement of gears can be a problem. Chain elimination is beneficial. Theoretically, there could be more, with smaller diameter gears, in a dust-proof casing. Congratulations, best regards 😀.
i think chain is good because if you stop paddling it will continue to move but in this case if you stop paddling its mean you're not able to continue cycling
I Might be wrong (and please tell me why if i am) but i don't think the chain is what make the bike still move after stop paddling i think the why is on the back wheel gear and i think he only change the shape to fit the gears But again correct me if I'm wrong
6:57 do these ball bearings do the work of freewheel pawls do you think? I wondered about that myself... I mean do they ride up the ramps one way but hit the flat edge the other way (and hence transmit drive in only one direction)?

would the pedal gears get bent out of shape or warped going over bumps? a chain is more flexible

Same thing with fixed gear bike and people still use those
Why would you think this can't have a freewheel (gears for forward motion and slides for reverse)?
Just make the last/smallest gear a freewheel one. So pedals can stay while the rear wheel/gear is in forward motion.
