The major pentatonic scale is so magical. It always sounds perfect and goes from major to minor so easily. Such great advice for newbies (and everyone for that matter).
I completely agree! The way I was taught music education, you always start with the pentatonic scale for preschool kids - they can play their hearts out and always sound good! It works for grown ups too :D
I found you after googling Native American flutes. You saved me $50 and now I can’t wait to receive my flute in A minor. Your comment about minor being beautifully haunting sold me! Then... I saw your steel tongue drum videos! Total, I’ve watched 5 of your videos tonight and learned so much. Your teaching style is super understandable. I learned I purchased a pentatonic tongue drum (that isn’t magnetic, so no fun scales for me) but it’s all good since I’m using it for sound healing! I always wondered why the 4 & 7 were missing! Thanks so much I look forward to exploring your channel further. I have a Kalimba coming soon and the info on scales/tuning will help me get more in touch with my crystal bowls. Seriously, I can’t praise you enough!!
Thank you quick valuable advice. I've just got mine from amazon. It's my 1st 13 inches 15 notes, and I just started practicing ignoring 4 and 7. Thannnnkss
Thank you so much, Molly. You are a lovely teacher. I have just been introduced to a tongue drum for the very first time, and I am so interested, especially to use for meditative-type activities. I will be coming back to your videos.
Just want to say that your have a relaxing personality and you would make a awesome teacher. Even the sound of your voice is soothing. Thanks for the lesson.
Wow, thanks for making these videos, they are so helpful to me as I approach the tongue drum as a 36 years old music dummy. I am a therapist and psychodramatist, so I aim to use the drum to create background music for relaxation, dance-movement-therapy, mindfulness and psychodrama warm-up practices. I need to learn how to use the drum to convey different emotional tones and atmospheres (for example relaxing, cheerful, sad/nostalgic, upbeat/pressing, eerie and so on). I am looking forward to be able to direct my sessions without depending on a smartphone, speakers, laptop or other devices for music!
Thank you so much!! I'm taking a Meditation Teacher training course and I just discovered tongue drum last week. I ordered one right away and starting experimenting yesterday. You and this video are amazing! I love the pentatonic scale
I bought one for fun , and was surprised of the flow of energy I felt coming when I play certain notes.. I don’t know about the frequency of it though, it’s from a chinese brand ( himalaya blessings) .. now I fell in love with the sounds of the one you played,, soo gentle and calming 😍😍
Thanks for another fine video, Molly! Most of my drums are, in fact, pentatonic (I'm a little bit of a pent-snob; while the diatonic drums can be a lot of fun, I have a sense that in their spirits, they are essentially pentatonic, much like the Native American style flutes). For my diatonically tuned drums, though, I like to weigh down the 4th note to the the 3rd with magnets and the 7th to the 6th. The resulting tones are amazing, especially if you allow a slight variance in the frequencies. Such incredible harmonics!
Thank you for this video. i do not play music or sing and today I received the $30 pentatonic drum you reviewed a while back and although I love how it sounds (especially for relaxation and meditation), I was planning to return it and get a diatonic because I want to learn to play more songs, this video helped me decide to keep this little guy. I am still going to get the 11 note diatonic, but I am going to keep this one for meditation and sound healing. Thanks again
Your inspiring, I'm debating on a drum or singing bowl. I'm doing stuff to help my anxiety. Got chf and only 53 so lots of anxiety. I actually made my own systrum today if you know what that is
Thanks so much for the tips.. My playing is sounding so much better. Merv is makeing music woo hoo !!! Thanks again🎶🎶 stay safe and have a great day!!!
Thank you so much for the videos. My instrument arrived at long last. The cheeper blue one got lost in the post. I love the bigger replacement. Eleven tounges. Brown in colour, beautiful in appearance and sounds great. I look forward to taking the instrument to the Day centre where I work. The residents will love it. I have Subscribed. Best wishes, Brian.
Good information. My tongue drum is not numbered, it is from India and I feel it sounds nice. However I would like to learn more on how to play it with even better sound or rhythm. What can I do? Thanks
Would you be willing to post a video showing us how to number our drums? I just got an 11 note tongue drum, and it’s hard to find instructions on how to even label them. I’ve checked out multiple videos instructing how to play, and it’s seems like there is no consistency in the way people label them. I am a musical moron, please help.
Thank you for yr lessons you put up here on the tounge drum! Its difficult to find the means to learn more.... is it possible to be pointed in a right direction with it all? I play around with mine but it would be great to know what I'm doing 😊🙏
I think it depends on what you want to do with it. Are you interested in improvisation and meditational drumming? Or learning more about how to read music and play songs? I can point you in the right direction either way 😊
I'm very new to tongue drums and just bought my first 6" D minor. It sounds fine with the mallets, but its hard to play with my hands. Can someone please recommend a tongue drum that is easily played with the hands? My primary purpose is relaxation and meditation and suggestion on appropriate scales would be welcome also. Thank you so much.
My drum has no numbers! I have no idea where the 4th and 7th notes are on my drum! I have a tuning app. on my phone - what key is tuned to 4th and 7th notes?
Hello. I just got one of these and have a few questions about numbering the tones. I have an 8 tone drum that came with the sticker numbers to put on, but cant find anything to tell me which number goes on which tune. It also came with some numbers that are duplicated. Could u tell me which numbers go where?
Great question! The first step is to find what key your drum is in - C is very common, but some are in other keys. Download Pano tuner on to your phone (any tuner will do, but I use that one) and strike the notes one by one. If there are no # or b symbols by the notes that register, you are in the key of C. If so, place the number 1s on Cs, 2 on Ds, etc. Then 6s on As and 7s on Bs. If you do register #s or bs let me know, it's more complicated but still not too hard 😊
watch out some numbers are not dupicated, there is a 1 but there is also an 1 with a dot on it, which means it is the shorter note. The One is the longer note
Molly-my new Drum says it's D Major. Tongues #1=D, 2=E, 3=Gb, 4=G, 5=A, 6=B, 7=E, middle tongue =Gb. Is that a key? Do I need magnets fort all the tongues? The middle tongue doesn't have a top. HAHA? Help… Please?!
@@nicolebarnes3617 it's not a bad thing! But don't pay more than you need to. This is my favorite small one: amzn.to/3fEyFjL and this is a great big one: amzn.to/3bx9Qpv
Often the mass produced drums will come labelled with numbers. If yours is not, than either it's in a different scale or you can use a tuner to figure out which are your 4th and 7th scale degrees 😊
Received as a gift steel tongue drum liked fact of introduction of the" how to play.." but so sorry besides all the tee- heeing couldnt see or HEAR OF ANYTHING ELSE..SORRY..
I clicked on the link and added the drum to my cart for Christmas. Hope you get a lil commission. Happy holidays and thank you for your great, helpful videos.🤍
I really wish i had a music teacher like you growing up you seem like such a beautiful person.
Aww, thank you 😊

What musical notes do each of the numbers correspond to?

Not really longer but on a higher octave or pitch, basically the same note but repeated in the next series
