Miss Universe 1977 was no surprise, she won the title of Miss Photogenic earlier that year and was said to be one of the favourites to win.

Thanks for your comment. Yes, Janelle was indeed Miss Photogenic and was considered a favourite. My overall angle for the two-part series was more about countries that won despite not having a “strong sash”. T&T had never placed before Janelle won, and added to that she was the first woman of colour to win, I felt her victory was a surprise of sorts, a very pleasant surprise.

Thanks for all the very kind words, Joseph. I think, like you, following pageants is a nice bit of escapism from the day-to-day, so I’m so thrilled that my little hobby/pastime is bringing joy to others. I certainly don’t pretend to be any more of a fan than anyone else, but I’m a huge fan of the historical elements of pageants, so I’m glad I’ve finally plucked up the courage to share my thoughts with other people. Thank you again, Joseph for the extraordinarily nice words. I try as much as possible to be objective, as this isn’t about trying to attack anyone else or bring anyone down, neither the contestants themselves nor other fans. Of course I have my favourites but to me it’s not about sticking to country lines. I’m probably more interested in the facts and figures about it all vs making comparisons and stating strongly worded opinions. So I’m very thankful you can see there’s no mean-spiritedness. I’m even more encouraged to do this by reading such astute and reassuring words. Thank you again!

The biggest surprise was definitely 1970. Puerto Rico was not a major favorite to win at all. The stunning Debbie Shelton, Miss USA was the major favorite. And, she just lost out. Even till this day, people are surprised by her loss. This is most definitely the most surprising Miss Universe victory and pity loss for Miss USA.

Very true! And Jennifer is my compatriot too - how bad of me! Prior to 2004 Australia hadn’t really done a massive amount at MU since their 1972 win - only four placements in those 32 years - so her win was indeed a surprise. The 1977 winner from Trinidad and Tobago was not a surprise at all. She was a big favorite and even was the press photographers choice. She was the clear winner. Viewers from all over the world watching it via satellite already had a feeling that she was going to win it. It was one of the most convincing and predictable wins in Miss Universe history.

    • @PageantNerd
      @PageantNerd  4 года назад +2

Thanks for your feedback. I agree that as Miss Photogenic, Janelle was considered a frontrunner ahead of finals night. The overall angle I was taking with both videos (Parts 1 and 2) was that particular countries without prior success at Miss Universe won the title against the odds. T&T fit that bill, and with the added layer of history-making by being the first woman of colour to win the crown, I considered her win to be memorable. Much like Michelle McLean’s win wasn’t a complete shock (she came 2nd in prelims after all and was Top 5 at Miss World the previous year), but Namibia winning the crown was in itself - from my observation - the pleasant surprise. Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to leave your thoughts!

Botswana's winning was shocking also because she beat out crowd favourite Miss Philippines for the crown. She was very literally the 'Dark Horse' no pun intended. With your overall angle being countries that won despite not having a “strong sash”, I'd have to mention winners rom the earlier years, such as Japan in 59, as the first Asian to win. The 1976-1978 span had winners which could be seen as political, though all 3 were strong on final's night. Canada in 1982 was helped my the SS scoring of SA. From 83-99, I see the winners as no surprise. Julie was too sexy in 83, Spain had no fashion sense in 85, and the judges just liked VZ in 86 and Norway in 90.

In my opinion, journalists and vloggers use the term "person of color" to glamorously describe dark-skinned people (black African-descent and dark-skinned South Asians).
"Person of color" actually refer to anyone is not of European-descent "white" appearance which can include Chinese, Japanese and Korean people. But "person of color" is never used on Chinese, Japanese and Korean because they are generally light skinned. Also, isn't "white" a color?
So my observation is that "person of color" is being used for dark-skinned people or a romanticized form of "person of dark color".
Personally, I don't like the term "person of color", I find it very vague and too politically correct.

@@PageantNerd It doesn't matter who was my prediction. There were a few girls or women who really looked good (Vietnam, Mexico, Aruba, Namibia, Costa Rica etc.). I don't look at the education or "speeches" like others because all of them are well educated and have different capabilities. And because this is a "Beauty contest" I am looking at their beauties. I really followed both competitions contestants since months (Miss World and Miss Universe). I didn't look at the photographies because they are all photoshopped. I searched for live videos of all of them (no matter if favorite or not) and looked at their appearance without (especially) and with make up. India should not win, either in Miss Universe nor (if it should happen) in Miss World. Both are (without make up)very normal, common girls without any speciality. That was what I said. I don't say they are ugly, but you can see a lot of girls like them in countries with brunette girls, therefore I said "common". That was not meant as insult.

Miss Russia was not dethroned but prioritized her education! Hurrah for her!
That American tv personality was GROSS beyond belief!

I think India victory in 1994 should have been Included...Sushmita was great but Colombia and Venezuela were predicted winners that year and Sushmita shocked everyone by winning the Title in 1994

Thanks, Ashutosh - there have been a few people with those sentiments and in retrospect I tend to agree. I was probably thinking too much with the viewpoint that India has now been a powerhouse, but in 1994 they had never won Miss Universe and hadn’t won Miss World in nearly 30 years. Sushmita’s win was indeed a major breakthrough. Maybe I’ll have to update my countdown sometime in the future! Thanks again for taking the time to leave your thoughts 😊

Haha, great idea! I do think that would generate a fair bit of debate, as a predictable victory for one person is no doubt unexpected for someone else. But would definitely be interesting to see whether people agree with my observations!

No.1 is really not really a "win" and sort of underwhelms as a "surprise".

Justine Pasek is a wonderful woman, yes. But Oxana Fedorova will always be THE Miss Universe 2002.
