  • This video shows how to take apart and service a later version of the classic Mitchell 308 fresh water fishing reel. This one has the cross wind block set up and not the planetary gears.
    I have been servicing fishing reels for over 20 years and am sharing my experiences here. If you enjoy the video, please like it and subscribe to see more.

    Thank you so much! I have two of these, always well maintained with the french manufacturing marks and two of the 300's one french one made in taiwan. My grandfather always had them serviced and kept spare parts on hand. I'm getting them back together as one was partially torn down idk yet why, but the bail might be bent. I'm having a throwback year and using a vintage eagle claw 6'9" fly/spinning rod for small water and an eagle medium heavy with the 300 for the river. I also put together a set of original Zebflex glass rods for my original Zebco 55 and 33's, of which I have four. So glad to have you here for the help. I'm fishing with the rods and reels my grandfather used and maintained and serviced without fail as a tribute. Here's to keeping them out of the car doors.

    Thanks for the info, I bought a 308 in 1976 it is an old friend teamed with an eagleclaw 6' featherlite of the same vintage amd has accounted for many small trout, bluegills and a fair share of crappies.

      Yes - it is freshwater, but will land big fish. Not just a pond reel.

    Interesting to learn about not pulling the pinion bearing apart. Great info as usual, on the intracacies of a solid reel ! Best Wishes,

      There are a bunch of nuances with the Mitchell reels. Seems they tried a lot of different things and weren't consistent across models. Fun to learn stuff - Thanks Cons - Dennis

    Love these videos. I have an old 408 that was my dads. I think he got it in the 60's. I decided to try and bring it back to life. It had a few problems. The spool was going up and down erratically. When the handle is cranked the spool will spin and go up and down but not in a fluid manner, it will stay in certain spots and not go all the way up before it goes back down and vice versa. I can't seem to figure this out. It did this before I had taken it apart. It has the planamatic design. The oscillating gear and black plastic oscillation slide look ok. I've completely and thoroughly cleaned and degrease all parts, then lightly greased with Penn grease and reel oil. It works extremely smooth. I'm very satisfied with how it came out except for this one issue. Could the channel on the oscillation slide that rides on the oscillation gear be worn? It doesn't look worn. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  6 месяцев назад

      Jim - the planetary gear provides an uneven up and down or stutter step oscillation. It is not meant to go straight up and down. So that is not a problem if you think it should just go up and down. The reel should be smooth to crank, even if the oscillation does not look smooth. If the reel is not smooth to crank, something else may be at fault mechanically. - I think your reel is acting normal. - Dennis

      Thanks for the quick response. That is exact what it's doing. I just assumed it didn't look right. By watching your vids I was able to take the reel apart down to each piece except for the bearing which I cleaned and lightly oiled. Put the reel back together with Penn grease and reel oil. It is surprisingly smooth. A lot smoother than the 300 that I just did that was my dads also. I'm assuming that is because of the bearings on the 408. I was able to fix the bail which didn't close and the tinging noise from the bail trip. I was able to do all this just from watching your videos. I've never attempted this before. What an awesome project, that has sentimental value, this was for me. I can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge here. @@2ndChanceTackle

    That looks like a mini version of the 306. Between the 304 and the 308, which reel do you think is better for use on a lightweight 5’ rod fishing freshwater ponds and streams for smaller panfish?

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Год назад +1

      I prefer the 308, but the 304, which was one of Mitchell's first reels will also perform well - Dennis

    Great video. I have a 308. The bar the holds and releases the bail wire is not working. The spring that holds the bar is loose inside the bail. How does this sping work

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  2 года назад

      The side with the hook end goes inside the trip lever on the opposite side of the one that sticks through the case. The straight tag end goes against the inside of the rotor wall for tension. You can get a better look through he schematic shown in the link below.

      @@2ndChanceTackle yes i see that now. But the spring is broke. Where can i get a spring like that? Also the person who had it. Was using the reel and forcing it. So the bail now is wore out along where the released engages.

    My shaft is stuck when I Rome my pins the real turns but the spool does not move how do I get my shaft removed to get it unstuck

    • @2ndChanceTackle
      @2ndChanceTackle  Год назад +2

      If the shaft is stuck in the reel, it is likely bent or clogged with dried grease. I would use a lot of penetrating oil and then firmly pull up on the spool after the axle shaft attachments in the gear case have been removed
