What I admire most about Wes is the musicality of his solos. Countless jazz guitarists play solos that are essentially endless runs, arpeggios, and "licks". Wes' solos are like original compositions, with each note judiciously crafted in a weave of artistic creativity.

Beautifully stated . Often you just hear a lot of noise, but hardly an inch of soul. Man is truly speaking through his instrument

There’s a lot of space between lines. To me that makes his solos more like a conversation than endless notes rambling on.

I still love Coletrane's cascading sheets and waves of sound, though, in his heroin years. John Coletrane did evolve it more after he got clean though, but shear stream of consciousness and blasts of notes is impressive to me. I just love all the jazz greats of the bebop era, one of my favorite genres and times in music.

I started playing professionally in 1964 and bought every single Wes Montgomery album I could get my mitts on but because I lived in Florida at the time, local record stores didn’t stock them so the only ones available were the Oliver Nelson, Don Sebesky over-produced commercial ones and not the small ensemble Riverside Recordings. Plus, videos didn’t exist yet and there was no film of him playing so I never saw that thumb until many years later. I could not figure out how he played those fast lines with that massive digit. Now, on RUclips there are 12 year olds playing like this…..progress!

Wes and Joe were very different kinds of musician. Wes was able to improvise wonderful melodic lines and block chord movements. His compositions sounded simple but actually had great depth and were very effective. I think Joe was technically a more advanced player and his early classical guitar training makes him a more complete musician; his chord melody was very complex but out of this world and has never been surpassed. Oscar Peterson said he was a genius, which he certainly was.

So tasty and natural, true excellence all around, near other-worldly, and all ingestible, comprehensible and very appreciable. Along with Wes Montgomery, they all demonstrate especially noteworthy "chops."
Other jazz guitarists do show perhaps immediately more amazing, astounding "chops." Wes Montgomery's, however, are as amazing and astounding, but kept, again, TASTEFULLY, within our intelligent comprehension and appreciation. His variety of phrasing and the "superhuman" dexterity that he possessed, with each hand, surpasses all. No guitarist, since or before Wes Montgomery, has equaled or surpassed him. He was a phenomenon.

I actually bought a black and white copy of this in a VHS in NYC back in 1999 lol.
There was that guy that was selling them around town in jazz clubs..forgot his name..he was a known bootlegger lol..probably most of these vids have an indirect links to him. I used to see him at the saint nicks pub..happy times:)

Beautifully colorized !! I'm not normally a fan of the process, but I think that these fine musicians were perfectly rendered. Also, of course, a gret performance!!!❤ I had never heard of these men and am so glad Wes Montgomery came up in my crossword puzzle. 😊

Oh man this is such pure "jazz" as far as I can see/ feel/ hear ... just a few instrument players in a room playing what they want to....that is the definition of jazz as far as I am concerned. Anyway, in a way, the term "Jazz" really is rather too all-encompassing to be accurate as a genre. It can include everything from free improvisation to structure big bands! This kind of jazz is what I like , the small group of instrumentalists with room for improvisation (I'm not even too fond of singers or words that much but I like Chet Baker and Billy Holliday's voices). Whatever you want to label it , Wes Montgomery was an expression that deserves multiple decades of attention and appreciation ;-) (edited because it wasn't saying what I fully meant) all you can really say is that you like this musical expression!
