I have absolutely learned SO MUCH from you. I have never been on a long hike or a backpacking trip. But we camp frequently, and there are tiny hikes involved. I've learned so many helpful things from you, and im so grateful. Thanks for being blunt, but not ever lude, lol. (Note, we carry out all waste, regardless of where we stay.)
Amazing video! Thank you, this was very informative and helpful. I am soon to be a first-time backpacker, and I'm trying to learn as much as I can before I go.
Nurse and hiker here. Just wanted to say if you aren’t using soap you could potentially be spreading a bacteria called c. Diff. That does not come off with alcohol and is opportunistic when on antibiotics causes horrible sulfur smelling diarrhea. So TEAM SOAP.
@07:33 Miranda shows you how to properly squat with your toes pointing out and heels to the ground. "You look at the hole, you aim for the hole and you just release the Kraken." Thanks Miranda.
U use the duce shove wrong like I did 😅😅😅 try sawing the hole with the handle. U can cut threw roots with it and the other side is okaish comfortable compared. For getting the soil out u turn it into normal position again.
I think this video was very helpful and informative. The tube was an excellent idea to back pack your waste out. The wilderness is just that for the local inhabitants (animals) let’s leave it clean of ourselves for all to enjoy.
Awesome video lol. No squatting for me. I got a collapsible stool (1.5 lbs), cut a 5x5 inch hole in the seat, attach a compostable bag. Dig cathole and bury it. If in an area where you can't dig/bury, its already in a bag for packing out. When I get to camp, I have a stool to sit on.
Thank you for this video I realized there are people who are in desperate need for this video but for those with a little experience it was like a 4th grade thing with all the laughing I could handle.
I use a bidet but also take a roll of toilet paper. The use biodegrable brands so i NEVER carry out. Dig hole and use biodegradable toilet paper use the bidet and clean up again with toilet paper and bury it. And always use soap and water guys. But these personal preferences
This is what all hikers and campers need to know, 20 years of shovel recces in the Mil this is the first time iv seen this explained in such a humorous way "Release the Kraken"....lol.
Is there a guideline for how far off the trail you go, or how far from a water source you should be? Also, that wag bag seems like an AWFUL lot of plastic waste just to pack out something that's pretty natural. I'd argue that burying, along with burying some biodegradable TP, is the much more eco-friendly option. I might keep a wag bag in the glove compartment, however, just in case of a really long traffic jam.
"Thou shalt have a place also without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth abroad. And thou shalt have a paddle upon thy weapon; and it shall be, when thou wilt ease thyself abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn back and cover that which cometh from thee: " Deuteronomy 23:12-13
Hey, I got a question. If you didn't filter your water properly which resulted in a case of abdominal distress ( explosive diarrhea)... would that affect the geometric configuration of your hole and/or maybe more importantly the proximity of your squat to try to avoid collateral damage like backsplash ?
Like I get the whole pack it pack out, but I think mother nature sheds a tear when you use TWO PLASTIC bags to remove something that has been happening outside for all of time minus the last 200 years or so.
I’m surprised too, that LNT is expecting everyone to drastically increase plastic use…I will say the wag bag seems a lot more convenient when you gotta go asap but man…
@@nickiparrott7717LNT recently produced articles on why it’s important to pack out turds now instead of burying them. If I remember right, several studies have revealed that backpacking sites that have been popular for a while have tons of buried poo that hasn’t really decomposed. Like decades old poo. The toxicity of human poo in particular leeches tons of harmful stuff into the soil and water, especially bc of the prevalence of medications and the fact that most people don’t exclusively eat the stuff in the area where they’re hiking (like the bears do). They say it’s better to pack it out bc waste management systems are better at neutralizing the poo, and if you’re tossing it in the trash (which may be more appropriate if your pack out method involves plastic) then at least the poo gets concentrated at a designated waste site. (Piling all the trash in one area instead of leaving it all spread out is what humans have done throughout prehistory.) The use of plastic is a pain, but LNT’s whole thing is about protecting wildlands. Plus, many people have developed less plastic-y methods for packouts - they’re just aren’t as likely to get used.
Great video! I understand that it’s priority we use those bathrooms that are at trailheads and provided to us, but a lot of times they smell so bad that it’s unbearable to be in there, especially pit toilets. Any tips for that?
.... "Less TP for your Bunghole" ... And the environment .. Most areas littered with TP on the surface are known as "(Insert State) wildflowers" ... .. Really going to get the Ultra lighters in a tizzy over carrying a foot long piece of PVC with caps ... that must be heavier than their packs ....
I wish when she was demonstrating she would have observed the other couple of rules one of which is make sure you're not by water and walk a certain length away from the trail
it's because toilet paper can take 1-3 years to break down in the woods not to mention lasting affects of some of the chemicals. So, if you are going to bury it in the woods, then at least get biodegrable toilet paper which breaks down quicker. Althouh, it still takes longer than when you flush it down the toilet and gets chemcially treated at the sewer treatment facility.
Nothing says Christmas!" like being on a popular trail, you think you find the perfect spot, only to dig up someone else's dookie staring back at you 😢😢😢
I never used two plastic bags. I generally have a supply of old or reused big zip lock bags. When I go backpacking I bring one of those with a paper bag inside. At least I can recycle the inner bag with used tp.
You mention packing out the toilet paper after burying the main load and some folks may be interested in why. I have some personal experience that may shed light. A group of us were canoe-camping in the Quetico Wilderness and we decided to camp on a small island. One end of the island had a campsite, so the other end evolved into a large area of cat holes. The cat hole end of the island was covered with TP scraps. It seems that the local squirrels liked to dig up and spread the paper. I have no idea why, but that is what they did, so you had to watch your step when you went to do your duty. And that, guys and gals and non-binary pals, is why you pack out your TP. (Top of the hat to Kenji Lopez-Alt for the inclusive language.)
Bidet only works if you use a hand, or at least something for the peanut butter. Room temperature water at 7 psi does not clean peanut butter off a porous surface. There are literally cultures on earth where there is a hand you never touch for that reason.
In Ontario we have to pack out our TP by law, maybe the whole load, I don't know for sure. I can't fathom how dumping more plastic in a landfill rather than just burying some TP is better for the environment. Should we agree on a system where we leave a stick there afterwards poking straight up to show people the area is occupied?
If you go into your BIBLE , to Deuteronomy , chapter 23 , 13 & 14 . it tells you same as Miranda has demonstrated . Thank You Miranda , great job . Roy Boyz
Toilet paper is made from trees. So wouldn't it make sense to burry it and allow it to decompose because it is paper, aka wood pulp, aka trees. Maybe I'm overthinking this
Only a few minutes in, I realized that for thousands and thousands of years people have been pooping in the woods, without doing any of this. There were no bottle bidets or even toilet paper. This is simply quite amazing that it has come to this
While I agree about being responsible and making it so everyone who wants can enjoy the out doors, the irony is not lost on me about using a lot of plastic to be thrown into a landfill.
I love love love that REI sponsored this video. And this girl did a heck of a through job!
I fricken love Miranda and the way she explains things 😂🤣 so blunt and hillarious
Sometimes you just have to get straight to the point! 😄
This video is equal parts hilarious and informative. Great job! 👍
One cool thing to add about the Pocket Trowel: You can store a backup supply of TP or disposable gloves in the handle!
ABSOLUTLY HILARIOUS An important subject that not everybody knows delivered in a thoughtful no nonsense way..excellent !!!!!!!!
Favorite part is when you apologize to your dad 🤣🤣🤣
This is possibly the most important backpacking video out there. Very needed TMI in this case.

Literally. Thank you for this i am the person you made this for. It did explain everything.

thats was your best video Miranda.

Maybe get some sort of composting accelerant packets to sprinkle over the waste in the forrest, mychorizae fungi to also help the floura and fauna.

She is really funny😂 and informative.
You did a fantastic job. Thank you
Thank you for the laughs!!! So funny🤣🤣 After watching this I am 100% going to buy a bidet! I didn't even think of that before! Thank you!
Metamucil for clean minimal wipe turds simplifies the whole equation you're welcome
Seriously, who else really covers these topics? And in depth or as well? 🎉

Thanks for this awesome video
WELP... definitely going camping with Miranda
A brown paper lunch bag can help to hide the evidence before it goes into the plastic bag.
can you talk about how this would be adjusted for going with several kids? You give each kid their own tube?
Very well done!

PS-
I can't believe you overlooked ....The Pooper's Prayer...
Oh Lord , help me to release this demon .

Thank you, this is very helpful ☺️
Never has pooping been so funny.😆
Best victory dance ever at the four-minute mark
@RainerGolden is hilarious! I love his random laughing and commentary in the background. Never ceases to make me laugh!
Very helpful! Thank you!
Awesome! The first woman/bidet video I've seen
So what do you recommend if someone has Crohn’s disease??? Asking for a friend…
Dig more holes?
❤ I wish I could leave two Thumbs-up!
Like I get the whole pack it pack out, but I think mother nature sheds a tear when you use TWO PLASTIC bags to remove something that has been happening outside for all of time minus the last 200 years or so.
Mother nature said it's OK as long as you only single bag it and then sneak it into the most annoying co-hikers pack when they are sleeping
Yeah ….. there is a line. And these people sometimes take it way too far.
I’m surprised too, that LNT is expecting everyone to drastically increase plastic use…I will say the wag bag seems a lot more convenient when you gotta go asap but man…

deal with it
nose plug
Face mask with a drop of peppermint or other essential oil will mask the smell, or a dab of Vicks Vap-o-rub.
Don't be a crybaby.

Nice to hear
What do you think about pact outdoors?
For a split second I thought I was saying opaque wrong my entire life.
I wish when she was demonstrating she would have observed the other couple of rules one of which is make sure you're not by water and walk a certain length away from the trail
so great!
Why can't you bury the paper in the same hole? If it's not a wet wipe it'll rot safely with no trace
Yeah I thought that was interesting. I’ve always buried my tp, though I’ve heard some places require you to pack it out

Animals often will dig it up, and then there's tp all over the place.
What about when you gotta go where there's no cover😮
How do you deal with poops that are....ummm...less than solid ??
I'd fill my shoes !!!
She said, "oh payg" and i was like "what??"
"This is my channel gosh darn."
I’m watching this whilst sitting in my Oval Office
Thank you, Miranda. Just… thank you 😂
Culo clean now has dedicated bottles for their bidet!! Not to mention the glow in the dark.
What camera did you use to shoot this video?
I'm very much of the opinion that a steel trowel is the way especially when you have to go worth the weight.
Well done...
Suggestions for doing doo x 3?
I must recommend "How to S*** in the Woods" by Kathleen Meyer. A genuine literary masterpiece.
Awesome 😂
Where did you go Miranda? 😢
Miranda has her own RUclips channel for over a year now called Miranda Goes Outside! Look it up!
I have my own channel now! 🥰

Yeah there was a reason that diseases were common and streets were filthy at that time lol.

Thing is, there weren’t 8 billion of us at the time, and thus also not as many hundreds of millions popping in the woods.
