God praise the halo, I don't know if it could've prevented something on that crash, but maybe yes, as he landed upside down after that cliff fall RIP Gonchi 🙏🏼
In my opinion they IndyCar should called this race off until following week in 99 especially Penske driver Rodriguez fatal practice crash R.I.P to Goncho. & Moore .
200 more horsepower, no assist systems, manual transmissions, and no run-offs. Miss this era (IndyCar is super competitive and exciting now too, though).
Was at the base of the corkscrew when it happened, I'll never forget the sound of that impact. Then how eerily quiet it got afterwards, you could hear the safety team talking to one another. The lack of any sense of urgency told you things were pretty grim, then the sheets went up...
The shot of Jim Swintal clipping the flag to the flagstand and just standing there is one of those absolutely defining images of the 1999 season, sadly for the wrong reasons. Herta was crazy good at Laguna, really but as far as Gonchi goes, I'll point to Steve Olvey's book where he goes into detail about it. Also okay, nostalgia talking but there is just something about those Reynard chassis that made most paint schemes work. Even the Della Penna crew. Oh yes. Shiggy having his license revoked then 20 years later went on to be a tlte winning team owner in a whole other series though. I think that worked out for Shiggy, maybe?
Looks like the same pavement the series is racing on in 2021. Can anyone confirm that? I know this track is held in high regards but not a lot of passing opportunities here. If you don't qualify well, you're only chance is to go off strategy early and hope for a yellow that catches the leaders out.
CART Champcars..... Simply the best! RIP Gonzalo and Greg...... 🏎️🏁
R.I.P. Gonzalo. I have to say this era of Indy Car racing was the pinnacle of the series with so many talented drivers from around the world.
Those 1994 -2000 CART cars looked awesome.

Rest In Peace Gonzalo Rodriguez who died on friday. Who knows what he could have achieved

7:37 what a save by de Ferran!
R.I.P. Gonzalo Rodriguez (he died in a crash while qualifying for this very race).

My first year with american open wheel on french TV. It was unforgettable 😞
R.I.P. Gonzalo Rodriguez
Thanks for the UPLOAD !
RIP Gonchi Rodriguez.
RIP Rodriguez
1:06:55 Paul Page says it's hard to blame anyone there, after what's clearly an error. He's very good at staying neutral but that one is hard to deny.

Too bad we lost Gregg Moore! Then Gonzalo! We can’t loose any more drivers! The sport is hurting! We are hurting! R.I.P.!
Race overshadowed by death of Gonzalo Rodriguez. RIP.
These cars were awesome. Old CART V8 is much better than the V6 in current cars.
Vous regardiez sur quelle chaîne à l'époque ? J'étais pas encore né je suis né un an après cette course.
What happened to Adrián Fernández on that last pit stop? He could've come out in front of Max Papis

👍👍👍🏁🏁🏁
Also, another reminder if we don't lose Greg at the next race, Helio ends up just being some guy.
Thumbs up if you were there.
