- The La's play Son of a Gun followed by There She Goes. Night Network. January 1989. UK. www.the-las.com Band line-up: (visible) Lee Mavers, Chris Sharrock, Barry Sutton, John Power.
Notice how Lee belts it out while being perfectly in control. Stone cold cool.
So undervalued it's criminal
never getting such purity like this ever again
I hope he returns one day.
Never say never again. At the end of the day who would've expected a band like The La's to happen in the overproduced 80's? Purity is always out there, it's just that it often gets pushed to one side.
@@davidedmunds I seen him not long ago, there's nothing wrong with him just needs a kick up the arse
The sad thing is....you will.....but you wont hear about it.
It wont be appreciated.
@@soulmantrainc.andthetnp.7087 always has done unfortunately.worked hard but to much of a perfectionist.
possibly the two greatest songs ever written.
there's so much conviction in lee"s voice, just on command. it's brilliant.
Sad that only 12 000 people have had the pleasure of watching this slice of brilliance.
It’s fantastic how yearning his voice is on there she goes I’ve never seen him sing it with such pain it’s fantastic his voice is almost like a brass instrument it’s that good
His voice is so unique. I fucking love it
Remember thinking I'd just witnessed the second coming of music when this was popped up on my TV late at night in 86 or 87...but it was never to be. A real tragedy.
This would've been '88 due to the fact that Chris Sharrock is on drums (who joined in 1988).
It's such a shame that The La's record company ruined their career by trying to overproduce them. With a band like The La's you need only room mics really and vocal mics for the heavier electric guitar stuff. You don't even need to mix their recordings.
The Good's Gone yeh you are correct.. and how good does this sound with just one mic put it front of them?
@@AMSRMX16 I know, it's crazy how easy they should've been to record! But yet they've gone down in history as the most difficult band to capture.
One of those clips where the sheer quality of the performance shines through despite the crappy audio. Mad respect to these guys
This band had it all! every song is anthemic! Mavers had a nack of making great songs from simple chord structures and riffs! he once said songs drop from the sky and we are lucky enough to catch them! if thats the case he must have a barral full of them by now! come back lee!!!!!!!!
Happy birthday captain
Merseysides got an enviable musical gene pool. A sea faring tradition, you can hear it in Mavers voice like hes in a crows nest atop a besailed schooner heading to somewhere he only can imagine. ❤️
I can't put into words how good Mavers' vocal delivery of There She Goes in this video is.
this is a jawdroppingly awesome performance - organic, warm, raw honey for the ears and the soul.
notice on son of a gun sharrock follows lee's taps on the guitar with the edge of his snare
should have kept that drummer. he had the feel of mavers. when a drummer and the best musician gel magic ensues.
Absolutely sublime. Why couldn't they record like this and put the album out that way??
Magical songs, there is something so special about the way the la’s music connects
Absolute stunning vocal - timeless
still keep coming back and these are still my two favourite songs of all time.
now thats talent
you can imagine the crew stood there open mouthed
Perfection
Magical that la.
Just....fuckin brtilliant...No fat, just pure structure and mechanics..almost bizarre how clear the intention is. Lee surely mustve loved this performance..it's red hot
These are my favourite versions of both songs. It's frustrating because you can hear how wrong Go! Discs got it. Clearly all The La's needed was room mics. If I had signed a band like The La's I would've done whatever Lee wanted. I wouldn't have sent them to hi-tech studios with expensive producers. I would've recorded exactly how they wanted and not tried to produce them at all.
What makes this better than the album version is the cross stick on the snare drum and the thump of the bass drum. Two simple things that make the arrangement so, so good.
Lee's face at the end 😍
Of all the clips i've viewed on youtube, this is, undoubtedly, my favourite.
Thanks for sharing!
Me, they got something mystical in their music.
@scrumpalumpagus not forgetting all of us who watched Night Network back in those days - fab late-night telly.
Wow wow wow!!!!!
AMAZING!
Incredible.
So Good, it’ll make you wanna CRY, ⭐️🌞❤️⭐️🌞❤️⭐️🌞❤️⭐️🌞
Brilliant.
Legends!!
crazy that this is in Lee's tuning (or near enough - almost half a step down) even here
Why is it crazy? Just wondering😄
heroes
I love this version of sun of a gun. If anyone cares.
I do. Welcome. 🎶🎵
Nice singing, looks like not the easiest song to sing but he nails it.
Awesome
...............sigh........just un-fucking-believable. The La's would have been as big as The Beatles if they carried on.
Double BOSS!
Tight as a ducks arse this performance. At the top of their game they were never bettered. Deserved to be bigger than The Beatles. Way more raw talent. Lee Mavers is the greatest songwriter England has ever produced.
Unfortunately, as great as Lee was he just didn't have what it takes to be as big as The Beatles. It takes more than talent.
If the Beatles had only one album I doubt they would even feature in our conversation today… lee was talented beyond compare
2nd best band form liverpool...... love em.......
amen brother
01:47 nudge nudge... top act with top album, bands should always split at their heights !
Albertus Enrichus too bad that people just wanna keep the money coming
wow the la's were juat a beautiful soundin' band,in more recent years maver's atarted to sound awful every now and then but they will always have a place in my heart
This would have to be the best performance by this band on RUclips, thanks for posting. His voice is just amazing here just spot on love it. I hear a lot of Eric Burdon in there which is no bad thing in my opinion. Great stuff thanks!
So fucking good!❤
These songs are like Platonic Forms, but better.
John Power slap the bass😍
Def the best comment on here too!
what he just said
@addjoetom tell your dad he is a legend!!! :-)
Continuing the earlier Liverpool/Dublin theme, I think the only singer to rival Mavers for sheer power in his voice is Luke Kelly. Its just a shame Mavers didn't record as many songs as him.
Where are the mics?
Not live
zero sound from lead guitarist so no lead riff for there she goes!
A couple of nice blokes. I hope their happy now, they seem angry in interviews. Huh?
wasted talent, puts noel gallagher to shame BIG TIME!!!!!!
Drugs and drugs
Double BOSS!
