All South East Asian countries will become more affluent, richer and this include Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia. The combined GDP of these 5 countries will easily double in the next 10 - 12 years, so, it would be close to US$7tn.

When the US killed the Japanese economy using the Hotel Plaza Accord in 1985, China emerged as a new alternative for Japanese products because China could produce stuff much cheaper than Japanese ones.
Now, if the US wants to do the same to China, which country can produce stuff that are cheaper than Chinese ones???

Been on frequent business trip to Vietnam for the past 5 years excluding pandemic period. I felt alittle let down on the infrastructure development of Metro and road widening. The government needs a more holistic approach and planning to reform HCMC and Hanoi to become world class city. It is happy to see foreign investment that brings economy growth to Vietnam, but Vietnam needs to ride on this wave to transform the country. China did a remarkable good job in term of roads, train system, bridges. This enable to rapid connect network between cities and drive connectivity of people and business. Bangkok and Jakarta have failed in their public transport system. Hope Vietnam HCMC and Hanoi will make a different. I like Vietnam very much and look forward to a cleaner and better public transport conncted Vietnam in the main cities.

Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) will play as an important commercial centres for developing Vietnam's economy. Starting from 2018, this country has drastically developed, which is the result of a smart government and cooperation from hardworking citizens.

      1. Your assumption is based on a strong U.S. economy. The United States is now deeply in debt crisis and industrially hollowed out.
      2. Is Taiwan really important?
According to Hillary’s leaked emails. The Democratic Party once negotiated secretly with the Chinese Communist Party. The Democratic Party proposes exchanging Taiwan for China's purchase of U.S. debt. But it was rejected by China. Taiwan is like a bargaining chip.

The pursuit of GDP growth alone does not necessarily result in a happier society, as we can see from China's example. In its quest for economic development, China has sacrificed its rich cultural heritage by tearing down ancient structures and displacing many from their ancestral homes. In an attempt to emulate the US, China demolishes old buildings and replaces them with new ones. In contrast, Europe values its historical architecture and does not prioritize GDP growth in the same way. Similarly, the Vietnamese people cherish their laid-back lifestyle in Vietnam. If the country focuses solely on aggressive GDP growth, it risks changing this relaxed way of life. Many Vietnamese immigrants in the US often fondly reminisce about the leisurely lifestyle they enjoyed back home, as they find the work-centric lifestyle in the US less appealing.

While Vietnam at least improve the issues of corruption and have less product quality compared to Japan, it's important to recognize that each country has its own distinct strengths and areas for improvement. Additionally, factors such as environmental cleanliness and a customer service-oriented culture can vary across different regions and are shaped by various historical, social, and economic factors inherent to each country.

I've been living in Singapore for a while, and it's a prime example of what happens when a country pursues wealth at all cost. A once vibrant city reduced to a soulless husk where there's no culture left but money, money and money.

I am puzzled by the statement that a once vibrant city reduced to a soulless husk…. Hmm… Singapore is still vibrant after 58 years… and our country’s short history couldn’t compare to other countries with more history and due to size, we aren’t full of rich culture like other bigger countries since we are a city state. However, Singapore’s short history of nation building makes us pragmatic, efficient, tolerant of different cultures and due to our lack of natural resources, we have strong survival and build-in crisis mode that only our country’s people can relate to. Plus, we’re really good at building state of art infrastructure and greenery because our country has nothing to start with so we build whatever we could to survive and make our surrounding more beautiful. You have stayed in Singapore all these while and never really see the essence of our hardworking people. Money is essential because as usual, we have nothing to fall back on.

Something critical to keep up with Japan for Vietnam is the bureaucratic efficiency. This includes improvements in integrating government services. At least for now, a single administrative matter could take a long time to tackle. If the capacity of the state could not keep up with its own growth and support the growth, it’s hard to believe that Vietnam could go far.

It's true that we have a potential, creative labor force and natural resources, but the productivity is very low. As I observed, many young people yet have an industrial working style, lack discipline in work (for example they skip the job without informing the boss or are unable to follow the detailed criteria the manager requires,....), and can't suffer pressure like in Japan. So no matter how young we are, and how many resources we have....all are still low-quality.

Many countries also have tiny sectors in high tech. You should look at what Vietnam is mainly doing in the top 3 services, agriculture and manufacturing industries. I’m sure whatever you listed account for small percentage of gdp contribution in Vietnam. It’s more appropriate to say that Vietnam is growing like China and if Vietnam is good and grows for the next 20 years, they still have a challenge to see if they can upgrade their economy to an advanced economy or get stuck like China in the middle income trap. We are all watching so don’t count your eggs before they hatch like the Chinese do, look what these Chinese do to themselves.

@@ditsygirl5409 "Many" can be a vague word for comparison. It can also be said that many countries don't have a significant domestic high tech sector. For another perspective, the ICT/digital economy, this sector accounts for 14% of Vietnam's GDP for 2022. Look up: "Vietnam records best-ever performance in digital economic development". For comparison, the U.S. is at the forefront of this industry and this sector accounts for 9% of its GDP in 2022 (Statista). Some other developed countries are even less. ICT/Digital industry is regarded the industry of the future. Vietnam has some world-class tech companies such as FPT/FPT software, Viettel, VinAI. There are other industries as well with many significant progress being made in the past decade. This includes branded cars, ships of many types, large oil rigs, advanced missiles, weapon systems, robotics, medical devices, vaccines (including COVID, first African Swine Fever vaccine), smart phones/devices (BKav, Vinsmart), IC chips (FPT Semiconductor), indigenous 5G (Viettel), super-tall skyscrapers (Landmark 81, Empire City). Samsung by far is the largest foreign company in Vietnam, accounting for 20% of the country's export. Just over 50% of its smartphones are made there where the majority (and rising) of the components are produced by local firms there. Look up: "215 local firms part of Samsung’s supply chain".
Sure, Vietnam has a long way to go reach the technological-industrial level of said S. Korea and more improvements are needed in the industrial progress and domestic policies areas. Also, Vietnam did not get the level of technological and economic support that S. Korea received (since the 50s) from the U.S. As with Japan, the U.S. needed S. Korea and Taiwan to be economically strong to serve as bulwarks against Soviet Union, China and N. Korea. Compared to its peers (or above) who had a head start such as Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Mexico, Egypt, so on; Vietnam is doing quite well on the technological and economic progression front. Vietnam is not China and it has taken its own paths on the domestic and international fronts.

In the past five years, the average annual growth rate of per capita GDP in nominal US dollars from 2017 to 2022 was 3.1% in developed economies (USD 45,600-USD 53,130), 7.9% in China (USD 8,760-USD 12,810), and 6.7% in Vietnam (USD 2,960-USD 4,090). USD), Indonesia is 4.3% (USD 3890-4800), and India is 4% (USD 1960-2380).
China's GDP per capita nominal annual growth rate in US dollars ranks first in the world. Is this called falling into the middle-income trap?
And there is no middle-income trap at all. You see that some countries’ nominal GDP per capita in US dollars seems to have stagnated in the past ten years, so you think they have fallen into a middle-income trap? Didn’t you know that the past ten years were a strong phase of the U.S. dollar cycle? This decade the U.S. dollar will depreciate and their nominal U.S. dollar GDP per capita will increase significantly.
Moreover, Chinese people have the highest IQ in the world. Is there any reason why the Chinese people are not the first in the world per capita? China's per capita GDP has increased 11 times in the past decade, and even increased 16 times in central provinces.
Don't say that the base is low so the growth rate is fast. No country has a faster economic growth than China when the base is low.

How will Vietnam ever develop first world infrastructure like China did at the pace it's on. It's done an amazing job at improving the lives of the poor and becoming an export powerhouse but it sucks at developing big infra projects. And now it's growth seems to be moderating as it's heavily dependent on exports meaning a economic decline in the West impacts it more than other countries. And the video compared total GDP, asking when VN can reach 4T. But that's a pointless number, Japan is about 25% higher population. VN's per capita GDP wld need to increase 8x to reach Japan's current levels.

Post-war Japan had great ambitions. in restoring the country Both continuing the same thing and receiving support from the United States. A strong industry has been built. Starting with no equal competitors During the industrial transition period. While Vietnam has only grown through FDI, focusing on selling cheap labor. Even though VN tried to start his own brand. But it is following. In a market that is already occupied. There comes a point when wages start to get high. Everything will slow down along with the middle income trap. For countries that sell cheap labor.

It does not matter, as long as Vietnam's per capita industrial capacity increases along with wages, foreign investment will not leave.
But it is better to have your own company, because if wages are the same in two countries and the industrial capacity per person is the same, foreign investors will be more inclined to set up companies at home.

You still think Vietnam is in the 2000s? Utterly wrong, right now most labor in Vietnam are no longer cheap and they mostly sent to outside world to learn many technologies so that they could return to Vietnam ans contribute their knowledges. Strong industry is now Vietnam priority now, and Vietnam already have many large companies and mastered many high-tech products. Given time Vietnam will become a strong nation with developed economy.

Vietnam's desire to become a developed country mainly depends on whether it can smoothly carry out industrial upgrading. Producing clothes and shoes is not enough to become a developed country. If industrial upgrading fails, it will become a breeding ground for other developed countries and be harvested periodically. When Vietnam undergoes industrial upgrading, it will inevitably touch the interests of Western countries and be suppressed by them through various means, just like China's current situation. What's different is that China has strong military power, which allows it to say no to unreasonable demands from Western countries

Japan is a country that has experienced people's lives before all other Asian countries or maybe even European countries. They have experience from 0 to the top of the world economy and know what results society has when they have money. They know how to change education from competition to harmony. All of these things need to be experienced, not imitated. Currently, China, Korea, and Vietnam are all following that path. Conclusion: If we are not rich, we will always think we must get rich to solve everything. Only when we are rich will we know that money is not everything.

Before World War II, Japan had become an industrial power. The starting points of the two countries are completely different. After World War II, only a few Japanese cities were destroyed, while others remained intact. When the war ended, Vietnam was completely flattened. It was not until 1990 that Vietnam actually ended the war. Vietnam was under an economic embargo until 1995. After World War II, Japan devoted all its energy to economic development without having to spend much on military investment and received a lot of support from the US. Vietnam started from a negative number, Vietnam did not receive support from any country.

In an alternate timeline, people imagine either South Vietnam survives or wins the war and imagine South Vietnam or the country including government being like South Korea. So I think the better question would be 'Can Vietnam (kinda) become the next South Korea?' I added 'kinda' in brackets because since Vietnam is communist, It won't become fully like South Korea's economy if you're referring to the current government of Vietnam which was the Communists invading the South.

The problem in Vietnam is very big, and many traps are waiting for it. Firstly, Vietnam's industrialization is still very low and there are not many high-end industries. The domestic economy relies heavily on foreign companies, so its ability to resist risks is limited. Firstly, Vietnam's biggest problem is taking too big a step, with almost complete liberalization of finance and capital and no regulation. The second issue is internal corruption, and the third is blind development and investment, which includes both the government and ordinary people. Thirdly, the Vietnamese government lacks overall planning. Social changes are happening too quickly, and both the government and the people are facing significant impacts at all levels, making them completely unprepared to cope. There is no risk assessment for the rapid changes caused. When a problem arises, it directly affects the entire country and has no resistance at all. The proportion of foreign investment is too high, and the economic data is all false. So, in the next five years, Vietnam has a high chance of collapse
