This was right when Dragon Gate started in 2004. Knowing Japanese casual fans, Dragon Gate were seen as a fresher alternative to AJPW. AJPW 2004 was something like WCW 2001 and Dragon Gate like prime ECW Hardcore TV. AJPW's problem was ownership changing, bizzare creative, politicking, excessive part-timer use (Misawa & Kawada) and the biggest one Dr. Death getting sick. The TV network Gaora started airing Dragon Gate more often than AJPW and used this anime intro to make things interesting.

CIMA, Tokyo Magnum and those Italian guys (in the anime intro) were getting a strong push in the Japanese indies (in particular Toryumon) in early 2000s after WCW misused them, and in Dragon Gate they were the top guys. Gaora TV started airing Dragon Gate when AJPW started declining fast because of Mrs. Baba selling the company in early 2003 & Dr. Death getting extremely sick the same month Dragon Gate started (July 2004). Dr. Death getting sick was a huge loss for the Japanese networks, so Gaora TV channel wanted to change things up and they gave Dragon Gate a chance. When they stopped using the anime intro, I'm not sure.
