Being a great guitarist doesn't necessarily make one a great teacher, but in the case of Joel Hoekstra, he is undoubtedly both. He may not be a household name, but he certainly should be.
I n all my 40+years of playing, this guy is just about the best guitar teacher there is. He breaks it down, he gives just enough of a lesson that isn't overly complicated yet compels you to want to dig in and learn. Joel Hoekstra wants you to learn more about playing the guitar.
Joel, you're such a bad-ass player, man... and I love your lessons, so clear, so easy to understand given the straightforward way in which you explain every bit. A huge thanks for the help, you've inspired me to be a better player in so many ways. Rock on buddy! yeah!!
I'm so glad to see JH teaching something I use quite a bit. When I saw this lesson in the magazine I smiled pretty big lol! Of course the latter part of the lesson is something I'm learning but that's the beauty of it. More cool, new licks to add to my playing. Thank you JH!!!
Been moving away from paul gilberts lessons an focusing on joels stuff. Have to say that joels examples have expanded my ideas an creativity. I don't feel my self "thinking" about techniques . i instead am hearing myself. Thx joel.
Wow!....Phenomenal guitarist, demonic mastery of the fret board and a great teacher as well. On a side note, if you all are interested in "outside" phrasing to incorporate with your soloing check out the late Alan Holdsworth. His approach was so esoteric, I believe that he must have had a link to some musical alternate universe.
Wow Joel, great lesson. Man, the way you communicate these licks and techniques is superb. So calm and straight forward...and yet awesome licks. You have a new fan.
THE DOPEST INTRO! I literally never ever feel the need to fast forward your intro song and one might not think about it, but that happens ALOT.. some peoples intro songs are just wayyy to much. Yours is epic but like tastefully epic! And not to long. Also that sweet background that looks like some gypsy patterned tapestry??... super cool!! Ha!! Love these lessons! 🤘🏽😝💀
Glad I found these lessons, Joel. Really cool ideas, why didn't I ever think of them?😊 In this one specifically, the shifting technique is a lot like "side stepping" which is common in jazz improv.
Hi Joel !..great playing and teaching !..and Whitesnake has always been one of my favorites bands !..... I am from south america but I live in Spain...I'm a professional guitarrist, (Session,Touring,Musical theatre ) and teacher as well, and saw many of your videos, which are amazing and very useful !! I've been playing rock, pop, and classical music for many years, since i did all the classical training in London many years ago....No problem with legato, hammer ons, stretching etc with my left hand ...but... One thing that is dificcult for me is the "hybrid" and "tapping" technic...because I use fingernails for playing classical, and everytime I try some of those styles,it harms my nails !!...so,I will keep on trying until I find the right angle !....Thanks a lot for your videos...very clear and helpful !
You are truly extraordinary Joel, you provide valuable knowledge for all of us here, frankly I really want to know you further to continue to learn the technique of playing the guitar, always greet rock and roll, Joel
Admirable. Genial. Maestro. (Y)
For anyone who is having trouble stretching out their fingers like he mentions, try playing guitar in the classical position (the leg contour of the guitar resting on the left leg with the guitar at a 45 degree angle as opposed to the traditional way of holding the guitar on the right leg as he does here). This makes playing with the left hand much less uncomfortable, especially on big stretches. Almost all of the greatest metal players I've seen use this position, and I actually use it as well
Great lesson and awesome new ideas...i dig it .however if i may add the stretches on pentatonic 3 notes/string is still near impossible for me on a 25.5" scale....
Just like the sun is different to the moon although they both provide light and heat, Joel is different and unique; his style stings like a bee and is sweet as honey; I love your style: Papua New guinea
Joel, love your playing man. Also, great playing on Mike's new album. Any Paul Kassov inspiration? Some of you playing and tone reminds me of him at times.
That's a tough lesson to teach in 12 bars in a magazine, but learning your modes in EVERY key is a great start and 3rds and 7ths of each chord are typically the most appealing notes for melodies..
+joel hoekstra wow awesome man that lil bit actually helps me out I've just been going to the 5th of the next key. great lesson btw and I will look into what u said. its so cool that you actually replied too man really appreciated!
Finger size does not matter that much (ouch don't tell the chicks that, they don't know). Seriously though, I've got small hands and never had a problem playing almost anything and circles around many people. Including the Ice Cream Man stretch. Until I was told I had small hands I never noticed. I am 5"9' though. Now I've got a complex. ;) I was telling a 22 year old 5"2' girl how I could teach her guitar and we compared hands. Same size. (Facepalm). Got it from my grandmother (double facepalm).Joel great lessons.
Im tired of how band members play Guitar ' and teachers showing how to play like this and I feel like I'm not Giting no Ware butt I've come to fare to give up . Lol TroyFrost / Troyster .

He's your teacher? Mine, too! Yes, he is excellent!
Joel, you're such a bad-ass player, man... and I love your lessons, so clear, so easy to understand given the straightforward way in which you explain every bit. A huge thanks for the help, you've inspired me to be a better player in so many ways. Rock on buddy! yeah!!
JH always has the coolest ideas in these clips & I look forward to them each month. Thanks for the inspiration Joel, much appreciated man!
Thanks! Really makes me happy that you're getting something out of these!

joel has been so good, ive learned so many simple ideas to expand my playing.
Thanks! I'm really glad you found some of the lessons useful!
This is indeed amazing.. his lessons improve me a lot! It's like magic revealed
One of the best and nicest teacher and professional guitar players out there thanks Joel for your time ! 😎
Been moving away from paul gilberts lessons an focusing on joels stuff. Have to say that joels examples have expanded my ideas an creativity. I don't feel my self "thinking" about techniques . i instead am hearing myself. Thx joel.

Been playing for eight years; don't know how to read music , so thank you so much. Your sound is amazing!!!

Bloody simple, yet I can see how it could be used effectively to stir up the pot a bit. Thanks for the lesson.
Wow Joel, great lesson. Man, the way you communicate these licks and techniques is superb. So calm and straight forward...and yet awesome licks. You have a new fan.
My favorite guitar teacher is back! Joel you have the knack for instructing. If used so many of your licks from these lessons.
That's awesome! Thanks so much!

This was a really great lesson. I didn’t really mean to click this video but the ideas here are great and I’m excited to try and work them all in
Great little lessons. He knows what to teach and how to get it across.
Glad I found these lessons, Joel. Really cool ideas, why didn't I ever think of them?😊

Really digging these. I knew Joel was a burning player, but he's really a great educator too.

Great teacher and these lessons sound great

what a runs. simple but bad ass sounds
Damn the concept is incredibly effective! Thanks very much for taking the time to educate us meneer Hoekstra. (:
you take pentatonics to another level
Great lesson and awesome new ideas...i dig it .however if i may add the stretches on pentatonic 3 notes/string is still near impossible for me on a 25.5" scale....
But a Vandenberg guitar, the neck is incredible and will make these lick easier.
Very nice videos. Keep on doing more, please
what i really love about joel that his licks are dark and creepy....please keep that sound joel...amazing licks
3rd and 4th sound so cool!
Love these lessons omg
this is a technique that is used in jazz a lot. it would be great to hear these ideas in the context of a chord progression
Omg....me encantó esta clase. Gracias Joel.

Amazing player
Excelente!!!!!! Thank you so much for your talent!!!!
Great outside lesson!!!
Very nice Joel. Great skillz
Just like the sun is different to the moon although they both provide light and heat, Joel is different and unique; his style stings like a bee and is sweet as honey; I love your style: Papua New guinea
Kinda jazzy idea for rock pentatonics, nice
Unique and inspiring, thanks!
Super,super super !!!!

Thanks, Alexis...just the in-house Marshall JVM and a Boss delay pedal in the loop, that's it.
this is a great lesson! thanks man.
what a tone !
A little late to the party here. The website errors out when I try to get the tabs. Are they available anywhere else? Thx
Joel, love your playing man. Also, great playing on Mike's new album. Any Paul Kassov inspiration? Some of you playing and tone reminds me of him at times.
Your awesome forever 💯😎🎸😍🤘
how do we change keys while soloing to create harmony and more advanced melody
That's a tough lesson to teach in 12 bars in a magazine, but learning your modes in EVERY key is a great start and 3rds and 7ths of each chord are typically the most appealing notes for melodies..
+joel hoekstra wow awesome man that lil bit actually helps me out I've just been going to the 5th of the next key. great lesson btw and I will look into what u said. its so cool that you actually replied too man really appreciated!

MUITO BACANA...!!!
joel is the coolest rockstar, alot act like they are cool but aren't. joel don't act that way. now that's cool
Rare hidden gold
Joel: "Ok"
Me:
The only player whose "hands are too big" comments apply is Paul Gilbert.
Thats call a master
Your Figure 7 practice will be my greatest solo ever, if I can master it with these hands, that are the size of an 10 year old. I'm 42 and 6'3".
Tear it up!
Kidding aside. These are perfect lessons for where I am at, and I dig that tone. Thanks!

48 started playing at 11. Don't get discouraged.
I'm in love with you joel
I think this guy is better than the other guy lol
sounds so fucking weird!!!!! its awesome!!!!!!
I know it’s friggin weird and amazing at the same time
Sounds like noise when I play it
Joel is so fluid
One day he'll actually have to come to terms with the fact that his hands really are fucking huge. Compared to mine anyway.
Haha! I'll try.
The intro song doesnt help for confidence lol
Very Jimmy Page
Im tired of how band members play Guitar ' and teachers showing how to play like this and I feel like I'm not Giting no Ware butt I've come to fare to give up . Lol TroyFrost / Troyster .
Why do I bother?
