To those woodcock and grouse lovers, welcome to some amazing footage of woodcock being woodcock. I don't know of anyone in my lifetime that ever viewed a hen woodcock turning her eggs, rebuilding her nest or chasing a ground mole away from her nest but you are about to see it now. This eight and a half minute video was filmed by professional wildlife photographer, Gerald Krausse of Kingston, RI. Gerald lives less then three miles from our Peace Dale Shooting Preserve and during the spring and summer of 2012, Gerald spent over a hundred hours filming the daily traits, nesting habits and brood activities of six separate (nesting) of woodcock and one turkey. Gerald spent many (eight to ten hour) days sitting inside a camo blind set up in nesting areas. Many, many more hours were spent filming the growth of woodcock chicks during the first weeks of their lives.
Gerald has traveled hundreds of miles filming wildlife activities such as drumming grouse.
Gerald's ultimate goal is to film the actual hatching of woodcock and grouse chicks. From what I have seen of Gerald's determination, he will succeed in that venture but he needs everyone's help by contacting him when ever anyone finds a grouse or woodcock on a nest. The time involved and distance to be traveled would mean nothing to Gerald. He needs your help to capture even more wildlife activities so next spring, if you find a nesting bird, know the drumming place of a grouse, or any wildlife activity, please call Gerald at the number listed at the end of the video.

OMG beautiful footage! I've just recently become intrigued with these birds because one has been hanging around my northern Ontario home for the past few days ~ must be a male due to his vibrate yellow breast plummage. Well wooded terrain in the back so I hope he stays for a while ~ he's been feeding on the plank feeders I have here and being mid November there is A foot of snow on the ground. Gorgeous bird!

The pleasure of watching the wonderful footage of the Woodcock all vanished when the filming turned out to be connected with hunting them. Why keep killing these beautiful, fast-declining birds? Haven't they enough enemies already?
because hunters are kind of a f*** species that endulge in killing and always find a reason for it
Er... did I miss something? There seems to be some kind of shooting range near these nests, yes, but they are not hunting these birds! That would be horrible, I agree.
Here's something to think about:
Most environmental work, the hands-on, getting into the mud, picking out trash and worse, most of it is done by hunters.
I agree with you, I don't understand this mindset, but the best environmental magazine I found for my region is called "Whitetail Journal".
There is a TON of environmental work going on by members of the Quality Deer Management Association (I think I'm remembering the name right), and serious research.
In the history of legalized and licensed hunting no species designated as a game animal has gone extinct. In fact many of their numbers have increased. No one appreciates the need for a healthy environment and robust population maintenance efforts and land set aside for nature than game hunters and fishermen. My best friend’s father did his masters thesis on the mating habits of the Woodcock. Believe me, Game Commissions all around the nation work to improve habitat and population sustainability.
A lot of the defending comments here are very specific towards animals like deer because they are very plentiful and can easily decimate an ecosystem. Others are more specific to endangered animals like rhinos because the hunting of them promotes their preservation. Different things apply to different kinds of animals and ecosystems. I doubt that Woodcocks would go extinct do to hunting, but it still isn't the best that they are.

It's hard to find good footage of these birds. The damn Englishmen just want to shoot them. So plenty of hunting woodcocks and frying them on the pan. This video is gold.

I'm curious; why did the hen desert her nest & eggs?
A mole was under the leaves and was looking for food, which disturbed her. She left the nest because she thought it wasn't safe.
@@melissaduck either that or because the videographers scared her away.
Because the guys taking videos scared her away.
Could be the same for the wild turkey as well.
