In this video, we are sharing step by step guide to apply Canadian SIN(Social Insurance Number). SIN is very important number which is used for taxes and getting government benefits.
A SIN is issued to one person only and it cannot legally be used by anyone else. You are responsible for protecting your SIN. Store any document containing your SIN and personal information in a safe place-do not keep your SIN with you.
Through this video we are trying to help newcomers who seek assistance to get settled in Canada. We are hoping that this Newcomers To Canada series will be very helpful and make these transition smooth and enjoyable.

Hi Jacqueline, Apologies for such a delayed reply. Somehow we are not getting notifications for comments.
You need not to send hardcopy to anyone if you are applying online. You will be seeing a section for uploading your documents. Recommendation is to have your documents scanned before you start your online SIN application.
It’s been 2 months still nothing, even when I contact them they say it’s with the back office

However, get International Driving license from your home country. You can drive with that IDL here.
Do we need to provide proof of address in canada or home country with our name mentioned on that proof ?

If no last name in passport, then All given name from passport will go in surname in SIN application. And first name will go blank.
First Name is mandatory in online SIN form. Somewhere on Canada.ca, they say to enter a space in First Name. However, we recommend you give a call to SIN helpline 1-800-622-6232 to clarify this before filling the form.
I have one query, I came few days back in Canada from 🇮🇳. I have only given name in my passport. What should I fill in the given name and sir name as both are mandatory field. Please help.

I currently residing at my relatives house and landed a few days Ago so what mailing address should I fill and what if i attached mailing address of my relatives ?
Yes. You can give address of your relatives for SIN (that's what we did too). It can be changed later by calling CRA or online by registering to CRA site.

Regarding the covid situation
Hello
You can apply SIN online from outside Canada (without landing), only if you are on study permit or work permit. PRs have to land at least once to get SIN.
Regarding processing time for online applications in covid time, it is not provided on Canada.ca site.
You will receive SIN on same address, for which you submitted address proof in SIN application.
