It's Hot Hot Hot At The Chester Half Marathon 2024

  • To run a Half Marathon at age 66 is hard enough but when the weather is hot it is extremely hard! I picked one of the hottest days of the year to run the Essar Chester Half Marathon on 19th May 2024. Firstly to get to the start line I had to run into Chester from a campsite I was staying at in the village of Christleton. I ran 5km along the Shropshire Union Canal into Chester & walked another 2km to the start at Chester Racecourse. So I had covered 7km as a warm up before even starting the race.
    It was a really warm morning and I had already consumed 500ml of water & electrolytes before even starting and one 40g super gel before even starting. At 9am when the race began it was already 18-19 Degrees C and I was already sweating. The Half Marathon course was quite undulating with a hill to negotiate just after leaving the racecourse. The course then went through the Chester City Centre before going into the Countryside on an out and back. To finish there was another big hill to climb after 12 miles before finishing in the City Centre outside the Town Hall. Support on the course was brilliant and all the volunteers did an amazing job. There was also 5 water stations on the course and I made sure that I grabbed a bottle and drank plenty of water. By the time I finished the temperature was around 24 degrees. I finished in a time of 1.49.31 and came 11th out of 43 runners in my age group 65-69 and came 1234 position out of over 5000 runners. Despite the heat I really enjoyed the Chester Half Marathon and would really recommend it.

      Thanks Dean for watching the video, really appreciate your comments. Yes very happy with the sub 1.50 & happy just to have finished in that heat. That must have been really hard at Edinburgh so well done for getting through the driving rain.

    Well done Kev !! Great effort on a very warm day. Warmest races I have done was Norton 9 in 2018. Only been running a few months and 9 miles was furthest I'd ever run. People wer out with sponges and hosepipes. Then in 2022 Askern 10k was mid 20s and set off like a bat out of hell doing sub 4min/k that lasted 2k then I died. Never been so happy to finish that day.

      Thanks so much Vicky, I hate running in hot weather, give me a cold frosty day anytime ❄️ My HR at Chester was through the roof! I bet your HR was too doing Sub 4 KS at Askern in that heat. Your support is really appreciated 👍

    Good run in the sun. Which one would you pick, hot and sunny at Chester or cold, wet and windy at Boston 🤔. Me, I'd go hot I think, but would probably be slower.

    • @samsonslaphead1
      @samsonslaphead1  3 месяца назад

      Give me a cold & wet day at Boston over the heat & sun at Chester every time! The heat certainly slows you down & it's difficult to control the high heart rate. Thanks so much for watching the video, I really appreciate it 👍👏

    22 degrees? Try a marsthon in 27 degrees. Actually don't try a marsthon in 27 degrees.
    Hottest we can remember was a Yeovil 5k the other year. 35 degrees. Insane.

    • @samsonslaphead1
      @samsonslaphead1  3 месяца назад +1

      35 Degrees WOW, I bet there was no PBs that day! I think I would have just walked it in that heat & then I would have struggled!
