It's time for our representatives who are on committees to start clocking in and out and get "fined" for not being present or leaving prematurely, hearings in session.
The members serve on more than one committee. During weeks like this, several committees meet each day. It’s normal for members to bounce back-and-forth so they can take part in each committee meeting. It’s also normal for members to leave to debate bills on the House floor before committees go into recess for voting, something we also saw a lot of yesterday.

But if you’re on the oversight committee, which is meeting at the same time as the Agriculture Committee, you may have to leave at some point to make it to both. I’m not making excuses for the representatives, but I do know that many of the committees meet Tuesday-Thursday between 10 and 2, which often causes scheduling conflicts.

For those unaware, Clause 1, section b of House Rule XVII says that "Remarks in debate shall be confined to the question under debate, avoiding personality". MAGA Republicans were particularly fond of quoting this rule in response to any criticism of the former POTUS, even at private events outside of the House. To quote an open letter from Clay Higgins (R-LA3), who is a member of the Committee on Homeland Security:
"The House of Representatives has longstanding rules regarding speech, behavior, and decorum on the House floor, the legislative chamber of We, the People. There has recently been a notable increased lack of respect , expressed verbally while recognized by the Speaker, coming from some members . This is direct defiance of the House rules governing decorum, and it is an affront . Though it is every American’s right to disagree on matters of policy, as Congressional Representatives we must maintain a statesmanlike discipline of civility when debating official business on the House floor. (Party) leadership should condemn this hostile language and strictly enforce the House rules governing debate."

There should be a rule that if a Senator or Congressman doesn't show up for work. They should be docked and forfeit that days pays. Only excusable for a legitimate medical emergency/reason that can be verified, not a BS written doctor's excuse. Then, you would see an increase in attendance.

I think some of them refrained from voting until they saw how the vote was going. At first (from my POV at least) the vote was 7-9 until the parlimentarian called for those who hadn't voted prior and then suddenly 4 more votes showed up.

Congresspeople are intelligent enough to articulate their platforms, so they probably could get paid a good deal more as business executives. Plus, most have to maintain 2 residences, one in DC and another in the districts they represent. Plus, they take a lot of verbal abuse from political opponents.
This was very enlightening. I have never witnessed so much dysfunction. If I ran my company or any other companies that I've had the pleasure to manage, run this way, I would be fired.
