When I was in school we sat for Senior Cambridge instead of SPM.
Nowadays when we speak English and write in English some people will brand us of ''Showing off'' and ask and ask ''Tak bangga ke dengan bahasa kita?"

Very true. I have heard that before from my other Malay friends too. Reminds me of a time whn i attended the MGSS school in my hometown first time. I didn't know the way to the office and asked a Malay student passing by. The school was well known for its high command of the English Language in my older sisters' time. So imagine my shock whrn this girl just gave me a cold glare and rebuked me with "tak tahu cakap melayu ke?"

Some years ago, while visiting a museum in Guancho, China I chanced to read a statement regarding the main focus of China’s education system. “ our country education system must focus heavily on science and technology, our county needs engineers, doctors, technocrats…. to build, bridges, roads, airports, airplanes , ships , trains in-order to move this country forward.” True enough, after 40 plus years , China has successfully moved 800 million people out of poverty and has also become a global superpower! We wasted 64 years quarreling and in confusion fighting about race and religion!!! When and for how long more is Malaysia going to get it right, I wonder , if we ever have enough sense to think straight!!! It’s 21st Century not “ Zaman Batu”

Malays can't stand PRC China style education, 8am - 9pm. Saturday is school day. No tuition outside, every parent extra fees for teachers overtime. Also, they recently ban outside extra tuition because some parents are too crazy. Those from Beijing/Tsinghua University are no joke, best of 1 billion people. Wuhan itself have over 1 million university student. Teachers are well respected profession in China.

My dear MM. I met a young lady who studied English programms ( i can't recall the programms' name)in higher learning university in Malaysia to teach English in secondary school. She can't even start a conversation about what she studied in proper grammar. How the hell the students will understand and learn from her teachings??? I was totally speechless and stopped the conversation in order not to embarass her further. Told her politely to listen to more BBC news and learn & understand the language & most importantly listen to the pronounciations of the words and practice it oftenly.

It is the case of the blind leading the blind in the public school system. And the parents unwittingly go along with it when they depend on these teachers (irrespective of race) to "enlighten" their children in school and, worse yet, in private tuition. A double whammy, if you ask me.

Just like our family many other children would join, Malays n Chinese. We would get not only gifts but sweets, chocolates n cakes. It was so beautiful. I'm commenting without watching the whole video. This only my view about our education system. Tbh the problem not only on English but almost every subject. Over the year I've seen many parents posted a picture of how ridiculous the question is. For example not long ago I saw a post from a friend showing a page from bhs melayu book and the question was to name our national car. It doesn't make sense at all to ask a primary school student to name our Malaysian national car in bhs melayu subject. We really need to stop this. Malaysian politics and the politicians are screwing with our education system for their own interests. They want a 'yes man' citizen not a smart one. They want you to be stupid enough to listen, to follow and depend on them, not smart enough to question them and go against them.

I would like to share an experience here Mariam... I interviewed a fresh local graduate back in 1997 from the South where he applied for an Administrative position. He could hardly converse a sentence without making a grammatical mistake.
Working in a Japanese construction company, we in the Admin Dept had to practically handle A-Z apart from technical matters. When he asked about his potential job scope, I gestly replied.. "basically anything and everything under the sun, apart from technical matters"... he paused, looked worried and then replied, "then I'm not interested in the job"... my obvious response and curiosity was, why?
He replied... "under sun, very hot"... 🤦‍♂️
That was when I really questioned the English standard of most our local graduates, "thanks" to our education system to be where we are today.

During my primary school in Alor Setar in 1970, most of the Malay parents sent their children to English medium school namely SR Tunku Abdul Halim, SR Iskandar and even Convent school. Wan Azizah was also studying in Nicholas Convent in early days. The English medium school are always full because the Malay parents will always rush to queue up and make sure their children got a place in the English medium school. Then there was a nearby Malay medium school SRJK Kanchut which was always empty with less than 50 student registering each year. Even the Malay in the kampung villages would rather wake up very early to send their children to English medium school in the city centre every day.
Then came along our new politician Dr Mahathir starting to translate Maths and Science subjects to Bahasa in the 70s and later totally abolished the English medium school to strengthen their political foothold. I can remember those days the Malays speak better English than the Chinese because most Chinese are studying in Vernacular Chinese school. I recalled later that Mahathir try to convert back at least the Maths and Science subjects into English but the damage was already done. And the latest episode of new politician minister abusing our education system was during Muhyiddin's time as education minister who ensure that English should not be widely used by converting back the Maths and Science subjects to Bahasa. Then this is the end of the story when our 'Cash is King' champion would rather spend hundreds of millions for our teachers to start learning English rather than our student to learn English.

Hi Mariam, Really like your videos addressing the problems that Malaysia has! I want to suggest putting your patreon links and maybe other social media platforms if you use any in the description so it's easier for us to support your work!
I'm a 22 year old Malaysian that has been noticing the problems in the education system since I was 15. When I was in highschool I dread by the fact that these teachers are only teaching us things so we could pass our exams and not teach us the things that are actually useful for our future. I am glad my parents let me grow up playing games and using the internet as that was the way I learned my English and never once did I thought my ability to speak, read and write the language was because of school.
Again, love your work Mariam and I hope for a better future for Malaysia!

Puan Mariam. let me share my story about how I learn and equip myself with English proficiency
    1. My dad was an English teacher so he created a culture at home and speak English with us kids.
    2. Then I studied at a religious school the SMKA type and was surrounded by friends who were not keen to learn English. But I don't care I had a long-term ambitions so I asked money from dad and subscribed English newspapers The Star on daily basis because that's the best way I learnt English, by reading news.
    3. And my own efforst works. I scored A1 in SPM English and was awarded the best student.
    4. I was successful in creating my own environment and system, despite of my surroundings.
    5. I didn't blame my friends or school or teachers.
    6. Today I am among the best high flyers and high income earners among my friends same batch, all because of my English proficiency I can work anywhere.

On the contrary, there is a saying by Nelson Mandela "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world". 1. Children fr English speaking families would sometimes laugh at the school English teachers’ grammar. Substandard English teachers will spawn substandard English speaking students. It’s like the blind leading the blind.
    2. Some so-called high ranking educated personnels like to rattle on their speeches n enjoy throwing in some English words without being able to actually speak English with complete grammatically correct sentences.
Does doing that reflect that they are of an elevated breed n status of educated individuals?
Continue doing your eye-opening videos. Love them.

Until about 1963 only about 10% of school-going children were educated in English up to Primary School level and only 5% up to secondary school level and probably 1% at higher levels. The majority were educated in the vernaculer languages or remained illeterate. Among the Malays, education for the vast majority stopped at primary school level. This situation existed until about 1967 and education in English deteriorated once Malay replaced it as the medium of instruction at the secondary level.
Teacher training was first done in-situ ( at the work place) for the English medium schools and later also at two colleges in England and one in Penang. Two or three colleges catered for Malay primary school teacher training. At the Penang college at least until 1965 only about 10% of trainee intake were Malays. The British provided education in English to the few they needed to satisfy the administrative, commercial and plantation needs then. Professionals were mainly recruited from the home country.
The level of English taught as a second or third language cannot replace the standard you obtain in classes which are taught entirely in English. The Education Ministry should utilise all available educational technology and methodology to remedy the situation short of the monumental task and massive cost of having all education delivered in English .
