Yes, cheap CNC machines can work, but they may have limitations.

For example, hobby CNC machines can be accurate to within 0.010 in, which is usually enough for a garage workshop. However, more expensive machines can achieve accuracy of 0.0003 in or better. I've owned one of these Masuter Pro models for over a year and have had great success with it, keeping in mind that it is lighter weight and might require more time and passes than the beefier models. But it has done some very clean work for the price of entry. I'm making signs, toys & games, as well as cutting out my own cutting boards. Definitely worth the price.
