  • This behavior is normal for mice and indicates excitement. However, it can also indicate parasites if the mouse is also scratching/biting with unusual frequency and force, so keep that in mind. In this case, Jessamine (Jess) was just happy that she got a mouse-sized donut: a plain, unsweetened cheerio (her favorite treat besides the occasional mealworm). You can see her roomie, Sweetclover (Clover), in her favorite spot on top of the water bottle where she can see everything. Shortly after I took this video, Clover and Jess started grooming each other because they're BFFs.
Jess is a female champagne mouse and Clover is a female black mouse. They are both roughly 10 weeks old at the time of this video (May 13, 2017).

Got a bunch of older rescues that were meant to be killed off because they'd "never grow into suitable pets anymore". We're a couple of weeks in and they all act like this once I enter the room

It’s so funny cause they looked like they are going crazy, or getting shocked or something. So cute

I was worried our mice had some disease acting like this, but it is good to see now it is opposite :)

Thank you so much for uploading this... I just got my first pet mice recently and was so scared when i saw two of my girls twitching just a few minutes ago, it's a relief to see it was just them being happy and excited

SOOOOO my mouse and my sisters mouse were put together in a cage for about 4 months now, but i came home one day to find a huge patch of fur missing from my sisters mouse, she blamed it on mine just being territorial even though they share everything just fine and this had never happened (she heard them fighting before it happened) NOW my sisters mouse is constantly cleaning and itching and scratching her bald spot, causing it to bleed. Every time we turn our backs, it gets WORSE! She can't stop itching and grooming her spot and its getting worrying! we have seperated them since) is this stress? How can we stop her from making the wound worse?

Im sorry to hear about your mice! What do you feed them? How much protein is in their food? It should say how much protein is in their food on the back of the bag (in percentage). It could be stress, but it could also be hot spots, which can be caused by too much protein.

i feed them a daily mix for small rodents (mice, gerbils, hamsters, etc)
but do you know how i can stop my sisters mouse from scratching her injury, its between her shoulders on her back

Holly, this is partially normal behavior. Are these mice pure black color by chance? I have all black mice (C57BL strain) and I've had this behavior many times, and it's written about in the science community as well. Certain mice strains will go far to trim other mice and mild bald spots will show. However, you've described it as rather extreme, so you don't need me to tell you separation, for at least a while, is the right call, then putting back together. You could also separate at night (sleep time) then let them mingle during supervised playtime only.

Your mouse has probably passed away by now, because of their age but it sounds like your sister's mouse could've had mites.
