This is non functional when the spectator does a riffle shuffle instead of cutting directly. If there are any solutions I’d love to know

To not make the spectator give the cards a shuffle, you direct them to give the cards a cut by saying "You can give these cards however many cuts you want". But make sure to not make it too obvious that you want them to not give the cards a riffle shuffle. Just casually say that "give the cards however many cuts you want" and you should be good!
