Gotta love how the vocals somehow seemed secondary to the musicians as they encompassed less than 1/2 of the composition! Not sure why, but many of the swing era tunes were like that...i love it all.
Many were instrumentals. Vocalists became a necessary addition. Times changed. Todays singers are drowned out by the instruments. People's wants change.
This side was the first recording produced by the Dorsey band following RCA Victor's coming to terms with the AFM, allowing the label's artists once again to participate in commercial sessions. The story goes that Sy Oliver's arresting intro for this highly stylised treatment of the Depression Era standard knocked his boss' socks off. The Sentimentalists, though not in the same league as their predecessors, the great Pied Pipers, dish the jive effectively here.
I remember this song, probably not from 1945 (I was too young), but probably from the early to mid-fifties when a local DJ may have used it for his theme song.
There is a "newer" version (in stereo!) of this Tommy Dorsey's arrangement, allegedly recorded in 1972, conducted by Billy May for the Time-Life's "The Swing Era" series (according to the RUclips user "JBL626"). It looks like Billy May was told to make the arrangements the closest as possible to the originals, and in my opinion the result was fantastic (purists will probably say that the original vocals are "warmer", or something like that, but I won't enter this debate, I just enjoy both versions). This is the B-side to 'Boogie Woogie'. I play this one on my 108-year old Victrola. Thanks for posting!

Beautiful song and one of my favorites for over seventy years as my late Dad had the record, and he played it frequently
One of the songs that makes Dorsey my fave.
One of T. Dorsey's best songs! :D

A historic, for me the best available version of this all-time standard!
