Not Cool. Thanks for covering this terrible trend. There's never going back from these things. The reason many of us read is to escape the effects of advertising. A sad irony that companies that make reading devices facilitate this.
Exactly! I hate this, when I especially take time to be alone outside of everyday stress and just want to enjoy my cosy book in serenity, and then I see those stupid ads.
Ads are a dealbreaker for me. I have always paid for remove ads. I have no need for book recommendations on my Kindle. I have enough sources for new and backlist books from reviews or RUclips channel there isn’t any reason for me to look at ads. A bigger question is: are ads even worth it? Seeing an ad isn’t going to get me to buy something. In fact, I’m more likely to assume that books with advertising budgets are for a different demographic of readers and I would be more inclined to skip it.
yes , ads ARE going to get you to buy stuff even if you dislike them like crazy, this is the normal regular person reaction , if you know stuff, you would know that ads act in your subconscious mind, and actually drive you to do stuff without you realizing , you are really a puppet to your subconscious mind ( because you don't realize your being manipulated) now you hopefully learned something new reading this
The thing that annoys me is that Amazon place monetary value on removing ads but do not recognize it when trading in. Eg. You pay to remove ads but receive the same trade-in value regardless of whether or not your device is ad-free. Also Amazon will not transfer ad-free from one device to another (from old device to new device).
Come on man... I was actually planning on buying the new Kobo Clara 2E as my first ever E-Reader. I just hope they won't put ads immediately and forces every device to update the firmware. Very informative video, thank you so much!🙏🏻
You’ll never be “forced” to update the firmware, there’s literally no way Kobo could enforce that. I could keep my Libra 2 offline for the rest of my life and never update firmware, and even if I did connect as long as you don’t sync your data or manually update, your ereader won’t update. That being said, it will be unfortunate if upcoming firmware includes really nice features people want but they also include advertisements. More than likely modders will crack it within a month or two and you could remove ads that way. Hope that helps!
@@NoNo-ow4gz aaah I see I see, thanks so much for this! Hopefully it won’t come to that. I just don’t want the new Kobo Clara 2E has ads included from the get go :(
I am planning to buy the newly coming Kobo Clara 2E, my first ever E-reader, after watching a number of videos from this channel, infact almost all of those. If integrating to an Amazon ecosystem is not the requirement, then I think Kobo beats Kindle in every aspects.
I own Nook, Kindles, and Kobo and Kobo is the best. I have the 1st Gen Clara and it is nice. Better than Kindle Paperwhite. I just got the Kobo Sage and love it! I can write notes ....etc on it
It 100% does. Esp combined with Calibre. It's super easy to download and read every book you want, organize, change covets and neta data etc. And if you really like a book then you can buy it to support the author (I usually buy special or hardcover editions, but download and read books first and never bought a digital book, probably never will)
I have a Kindle Oasis, for which I paid the higher price to have no ads. I really dislike having all the book recommendations pop up now, as well as the new way of categorizing content onscreen since the last update on the Library and Home screens. Because of this, I have been considering switching to Kobo next time I want a new ereader; now I'm not so sure.
I have the Kobo with the side buttons. Libra and the Sage also I have the Oasis. I am very happy with Kobo, Their devices are of the highest quality and i own every Nook and Kindle there is to compare

I’ll have to keep an eye open for ads on my Kobo Libra. I sideload most books so I don’t need to connect to internet, thus avoid any updates. But next time I connect to download a library book I’ll keep an eye open for Kobo trying to update. I don’t think I notice ads though. If I see a page with a pile of book covers I don’t know if it’s an ad or a graphic of the books I have on my Kobo. I immediately tap to library list without looking at the graphic. Most of the time my sleep screen shows the current book I’m reading. I only see the graphic when I’ve side loaded a bunch of books and my screen resets.
Kobo Plus isn't yet available in America, so it wouldn't make sense for them to advertise it here. I'm sure the ads were only targeted to areas where Kobo Plus is available. Still a disappointing move by Kobo.
In Canada the ad-version of the kindle does not exist; You just have to shell out the cash for the ad-free version. I was considering a Kobo because it can borrow books from my local library BUT ads would be a deal breaker for me.
I recently started using KOReader on my Kobo Libra H2O and I like it quite a bit. No ads, lot of control over your reading settings and experience, wireless connection to Calibre are a few things I’ve liked. Kindle is still my main reading environment, but I’ve been impressed with KOReader for sideloaded books.

I live in Australia, so my Kindle doesn't really have any intrusive ads. I love my Kobo because of the page turn buttons and the UI experience, but I'm feeling resigned to being locked into the Kindle ecosystem because often I'll go looking for ebooks or audiobooks and Kindle/Audible has them more readily available, and Kindle Unlimited seems to have a better range than Kobo Plus. If occasional ads on a their devices puts more money in Kobo's pockets and allows them to be more competitive with Amazon, I'm okay with it. I don't mind ads, so long as they are books catered to my interests (none of those fast-food, insurance, groceries ads please).
