Ronald Virgilio

Ronald Virgilio was born in 1947 in New Jersey. September of 1968, he got his draft notice to serve in the Vietnam War. He traveled to New Brunswick, New Jersey for physical testing and went on to Fort Dix, New Jersey to do basic training which lasted 8 weeks. From there, he went to Fort Ord, California to do Advanced Individual Training (AIT) which lasted for 8 weeks.
He went to Oakland, California next, to fly to Vietnam in January of 1970 he went from Cu Chi Vietnam up Highway 1 by cattle truck to Phu Bai Way to Camp Evans to be a part of the Delta Company of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne.
February to early March, Ronald Virgilio is in the lowlands of Vietnam. Early March, his company was assigned to open a new Firebase, Ripcord. On March 12th, Alpha Company goes out there and then, comes back. On April 1, Bravo Company goes out and comes back in. During this time, Virgilio and his Battalion went to various firebases to secure them for artillery. April 8th, Virgilio and his company received heavy small arms fire and mortar fire. He was wounded because he got sharp metal pieces in his back, head, and knee. Because of this, he was taken back to Camp Evans for 1 month to recuperate and returned in early May. In June and July, he was sent to Firebase Ripcord and participated in the attack on Hill 1000 on July 7-8.
Finally, in mid-November Virgilio’s captain told him that he could leave the field and go back to Camp Evans. Finally, his tour in Vietnam ended, and he flew out of Danang, Vietnam to Fort Lewis, Washington. He then finished his time serving in Fort Hood and joined the armored cavalry where he joined the base baseball team. In August, he was discharged and went to work for GM for almost 30 years before retiring.
