This is such a great tip and approach to woodland photography. I went out today to scout a nice reservoir nearby, and I made myself slow down a bit to find better compositions. Thanks so much Joshua! I'm always looking forward to your woodland photography videos!
One of the reasons why I returned to photography was that it did make me slow down, but even then it was a case of finding a composition set it all up, wait for the white square to green, click and then move on! Now that I am using vintage manual focus lenses. I really do have to take my time on every photograph.
Beautiful shots! The timer is a fantastic idea. Another tool I've found beneficial to learning the practice of slowing down is that I shoot a roll or two of film now and again. Nothing like getting back to basics for a crash course in slowing down and attempting to get the best shot the first time.
Good morning Joshua, I'm a first time viewer and I have also subscribed to your channel, I really struggle with "finding" a composition, especially with woodland photography, sorry for this pun but sometimes i cant see the wood for the trees and yes I believe I suffer with what if syndrome. Giving in too quickly because something just doesn't jump out for me. So next time I'm out I'll give this timer thing a go. Can I say get yourself a L bracket for your camera its so much easier to change from portrait to landscape without faffing with the tripod head 👍
I think I have watched all your videos, Joshua, and really enjoy them. Your presentation style is very natural and you offer varied content rather than the same thing all the time. I'm really looking forward to your woodland series as I could do with some tips.
Loved the video. More please. I would be interested in some time in Wales, where I could pick your brain, but a trip like that is WAY past my budget. Wales is the ancestral home of my departed wife. Her father's middle name was Rupert. I was led to believe he was one of the ancient monarch.
Very good advice! You got a new sub! Loved the video. I rarely used photography app but when I do is to confirm the DoF of a particular lens & aperture...
You seem to have come quite a long way very quickly with your RUclips videos Joshua. Enjoyable content, you have a pleasant disposition, which really helps and you obviously have a passion for photography. Looking forward to your future series on Woodland shooting. Good luck.
Great advice about slowing down by using a timer. I often tell myself when I go out to be intentional and take my time, however I invariably end up forgetting that and rushing things .
That timer is a great idea. I like a lot the colours and the composition on the last one. Regarding fog... It's very welcome in the woodland but somehow I always manage to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Typical... 🤣
Great tips Josh! I have fallen into the “what if” there’s a better shot or if my photos are not good enough, and so on. If we listen to the what if’s we will always walk away without any photos. I’ve learned over the years that even if I have a bad composition it’s something to learn from and improve upon on my next adventure. I enjoy your video content. Thank you for sharing! 📷🙏

A good tip, once you find an interesting subject, is to photograph it close, far, left, right, up, and down.

LOL. We nned to apply the advice we got as kids for crossing the road: Stop, Look, Listen. Glad I can now give this good advice a second outing 😀

Great tip! That reminds me of a saying by Clifford Pickett: “Work the scene!”
And what a beautiful forest!

A useful tip. Will try it when I go out later this week. Thanks.

Lite Mate. Great for evaluating ISO Aperture and shutter speed. Just like an old 35mm film light measure.
Looking forward to the woodland series. I’m fairly new to photography. I live in the middle of the New Forest so any advice will be valuable 👍

Welcome aboard 😁
What lens were you using? And was that a wide-angle adapter on the end?
Used a mix of my super wide and mid zoom. Adapter was for the polariser.
could ypu plz tell us why you upgrade from 250d to r7 not r5 ?
As I said in my video, it was the simplest choice. Could keep all my lenses.
What is that on the end of your lens?
Adapter for polariser. Got a more compact one now.
You have ruined viewership on your channel simply by not going mft 😖
I’m sorry but it feels like I’ve been had with this video. 👎
Huh? 🤔
