Al Carlitos se le ocurrió la melodía como a las tres de la mañana, seguramente estaba de farra, y lo llamo a Le Meza para que la anotara en la tabla de partituras, ya que él no sabía hacerlo. Como Le Meza estaba durmiendo cuando recibió el llamado, cuando terminó de notarlo le dijo a Gardel que no era gran cosa, y él le respondió que en la mañana lo mirara. Al otro día se fijó y se dio cuenta que era una joya. Desñues hizo la letra de la canción y hoy es uno de los más grandes tangos de la historia.

I first heard this magnificent orchestral version of the Carlos Gardel song in "Scent of a woman" (and after in "Schindler's List" of course) I fell in love instantly with this music
I'm Argentinian and I appreciate proper tango, not the Piazzola malarkey or european lame tango, it doesn't have the same feeling that the tango porteño, arrabalero has. As such, I have to say that this version of Por Una Cabeza gets right into my veins and makes my body all tingly with emotion and passion, just like tango is supposed to do. I LOVE this version and I'm so impressed that tango was depicted so well in a Hollywood movie (not the dancing though, just the music). Also Vida Mia is featured in the background in the movie, while they're sat at the table chatting, and I just love what this orchestra does with it. It takes me right back to Buenos Aires.
The original version of " por una cabeza " was released in 1935 ,performed by Carlos gardel, arrangements of A .Le pera and trio of guitars ; Barbieri,Riverol,Aguilar... Was composed in 1934 but recorded in 1935. The one of "scent of a woman" is just a cover and shouldn't be misinterpreting the title of the video..
I just googled "famous tango song" and it was the second result I clicked on, listed third overall in the google results. Mercifully easy, I thought. I was dreading the prospect of humming it to people, asking for their help identifying it.
