One of the great if not the greatest composer America has produced in the last century...,
its good that on venues like RUclips he can be heard & appreciated by a wide audience!

Who might be greater? The father of American classical music.

Ives' music speaks directly to the listener. It is like sitting down and eating a good, nutritious meal. He never ceases to inspire me.

What a gorgeous sound. As someone who comes from a ‘fundamentalist’ church, the use of old hymns is a moving experience.

Interesting performance. I find that in this work, and in other really "American" works (like Ives, Copland, etc) I prefer American conductors, especially Bernstein, as they tend to make the music sound more "American" - couldn't tell you exactly why. Perhaps, at least with Bernstein, it's going past what is written and arriving at the soul of the music. An example is at 6:51 where there is little here of the tempo indications indicated in the score at this moment and it all has pretty much the same tempo, like a regular, if subdued, waltz. Compare with Bernstein at the same place where he really revels in the tempo subtleties.

@@HIJK_LMNOP these days I would normally agree with you- but I disagree in terms of Ives and Copland music - from a time before America went down the toilet...
