Pretty crazy to think I’ve done a midyear video before you have (well, it’s officially called my Mid-Year Report, but still!). Some pretty good picks on this list! Might give me motivation to pick up the slack and do my own… 👀
I agree with the majority of your takes here, especially HMHAS, All Born Screaming, Dark Times, and Mountainhead, but I wanna bring up Joywave's "Permanent Pleasure" and IDKHOW's "GLOOM DIVISION" as albums i've been loving since they've come out. I'll toss in AVRALIZE's "FREAKS" as some of the best metalcore i've heard all year, Fax Gang and Parannoul's collab album "Scattersun" as some really cool glitchy hyper pop shoegazey type beat, glass beach's "plastic death" as something I can't even really pin down into any one genre, Microwave's "Let's Start Degeneracy" (I'm suprised you didn't talk about it) for some really chill, slightly gazey alt rock, and Wallows' "Model" for some really nice indie alt rock. Love the mid-year review, great way to recap what's been good this year!
@perhapsitsnoelle hey! Permanent Pleasure took me by surprise, i wasnt expecting to love it as much as I do; He's Back! and 787 Dreamliner, and Hate To Be A Bother are personal favorites! i first got into Joywave in 2022 when they dropped Cleanse, and i think PP is definitely the band at their peak.
Currently, Bayside is my AOTY, combining the heavy sound of their last album with the hooky stuff they’re consistently great at. Belmont’s latest also really floored me with its relatability.
Nice list Jon! These are my favorites best to worst (but none of them bad): MGMT - Loss of Life Vampire Weekend - OGWAU The Smile - Wall of Eyes Beyonce - Cowboy Carter Billie Eilish - HMHAS English Teacher - This Could Be Texas Charli xcx - Brat St. Vincent - All Born Screaming BMTH - NeX GEn Pond - Stung! My top favorites so far this year are Saviors, Clancy, Prelude to Ecstasy, and Only God Was Above Us from this video. Also in my personal list would be Model by Wallows, Cage the Elephant's Neon Pill, and IDKhow's Gloom Division.
I think it's a good thing that you put out this video. Always better to check out some of these recommendations now and save some time at the end of the year for the next batch of solid records than listening to too much all at once. Anyways, Clancy is my personal best album so far with Post Human and Saviors right behind it!
I can't get through some of Nex Gen just because the lyrics. In limousine, "Get me low, like a basement" makes me laugh every time i hear it Clancy, Saviors, and the new Knocked Loose album are my top 3 AOTY so far :)
Love this mid-year catchup! 👍 Makes it so that we all can hear about stuff that we may have missed before the year is over and we’re onto new music. Definitely keep doing them each year in June or July! Some great 2024 albums not mentioned in the video • I Got Heaven by Mannequin Pussy • IGNORE THIS by Dead Pony • falling for robots and wishing i was one by LØLØ • The Great Spirit by Fried By Flouride Keep up the great work!
If you’re into emo rock (and I know you are), the new Southtowne Lanes album has been HEAVILY slept on in mainstream music. Such a good record and I highly recommend checking it out.
@@Ericjionni That’s still not a lot in the grand scheme of things compared to most of the other artists covered in music publications and RUclips, etc.
@@Ericjionni Oh gotcha lol yeah it’s crazy how they’re not popping off like they should. Especially since a lot of bands are resurfacing that were huge on that sound
Last dinner party, st Vincent, willow, vampire weekend and kaytranada are my top 5 with knocked loose, four tet and Marika hackman deserving of a mention for outstanding music which will likely end up high on my year end list.
Caligula's Horse's new album (Charcoal Grace) and Imminence's new album (The Black) are ones that have made big splashes, but the new Cyberiam (Unobtanium) is a beautifully introspective album from them

Neck Deep - Self Titled Honorable mention: ERNEST - Nashville, Tennessee I'm really looking forward to the new Four Year Strong, Post Malone, and State Champs albums. Although the new A Day to Remember song was horrendous, I am still curious to see what their album will sound like. Low expectations, but ADTR has always been one of my favorites so I do have some anticipation for new music.
Honestly I know you don’t do reviews too often anymore but I would love to see one for “Only God Was Above Us” if ever, since it does seem you’re passionate about it. That album seems to have gone somewhat under the radar for a relatively big band in a sea of big hot releases. It’s been my favorite of the year quite handily and every song does just get better over time. Somehow…it did manage to dethrone MVOTC for me.

Long time listener, first time subscriber. Yeah, I'm "that" guy. I wanted to tell you that you have a nice bombastically persuasive voice that I liken to the greats like Casey Kasem. Nice work.
That's so kind of you Oscar, that's a huge compliment! Kasem is definitely one of my earliest inspirations, my dad was a big fan of his show/voice acting

The new Nothing More album is their best since the self titled record. Hopefully you dig it!! As of right now it’s my favorite album of the year and it just came out today 😂
So far my AOTY is Coup de Grâce by Seeyouspacecowboy. 2000’s metalcore and post hardcore back with vengeance and attitude, this proves the band is more than just a nostalgia act with its electric energy, earwormy choruses, band chemistry (especially between the 3 vocalists) and a jazzy tinge not seen on their previous records that makes this one feel special. The guest vocalists are also fantastic too. Not a single skip, I don’t personally see anything topping it for me and I feel like not a lot of ppl are discussing it in the conversation of the strongest albums released this year.

@@artvjon Ooh interesting. I'm excited to see that And A Lonely Sinner is a post rock album by a sad sheep girl and if you like post rock I'd definitely recommend it. It's been getting a lot of positive reviews on aoty (in fact Samlrc is an aoty user herself and I see aoty users calling it the best aoty user album so that's saying something)
Vampire Weekend had a return to form Twenty One Pilots had a return to form Bring Me The Horizon have surprisingly outdone themselves Billie Eilish has surprisingly outdone herself... I'm liking 2024 so far I'm trying to get into that Last Dinner Party album btw. I'll see what else I can grab from here Great list
St Vincent strikes me as being a lot like David Bowie. She seems to completely reinvent herself with every album. Some fans might not like a particular album, but they'll probably like the next one. She also seems to be one of those artists who you feel like you know less about the more you learn, a true enigma. It's like every answer raises another 5 far more complicated questions. I personally really love Daddy's Home because I love 70s music and she does such a great job of recreating that sound and that vibe without sounding like she's copying anyone, it feels like she actually went back in time and made an album in 1974ish but of course that's not what happened. There's an attention to detail there that you don't often get when an artist tries to replicate the vibes of a bygone era.
What's your favorite album of 2024 so far? Enjoy the mid-year review, lmk if I should make this a regular thing in the future!!

Love the mid-year review, great way to recap what's been good this year!
i wasnt expecting another joywave enjoyer here, wassup
@perhapsitsnoelle hey! Permanent Pleasure took me by surprise, i wasnt expecting to love it as much as I do; He's Back! and 787 Dreamliner, and Hate To Be A Bother are personal favorites!
i first got into Joywave in 2022 when they dropped Cleanse, and i think PP is definitely the band at their peak.
@@kahnxo permanent pleasure is on a diff level for them
@perhapsitsnoelle yeah i think the production really drove it home for them, they really kicked up a gear on this one
love model banger albums lets go
Currently, Bayside is my AOTY, combining the heavy sound of their last album with the hooky stuff they’re consistently great at. Belmont’s latest also really floored me with its relatability.
Nice list Jon!
These are my favorites best to worst (but none of them bad):
MGMT - Loss of Life
Vampire Weekend - OGWAU
The Smile - Wall of Eyes
Beyonce - Cowboy Carter
Billie Eilish - HMHAS
English Teacher - This Could Be Texas
Charli xcx - Brat
St. Vincent - All Born Screaming

hell yea!! wallows recognition!
In limousine, "Get me low, like a basement" makes me laugh every time i hear it
Clancy, Saviors, and the new Knocked Loose album are my top 3 AOTY so far :)
Love this mid-year catchup! 👍 Makes it so that we all can hear about stuff that we may have missed before the year is over and we’re onto new music.
Definitely keep doing them each year in June or July!
Some great 2024 albums not mentioned in the video
• I Got Heaven by Mannequin Pussy
• IGNORE THIS by Dead Pony
• falling for robots and wishing i was one by LØLØ
• The Great Spirit by Fried By Flouride

hell yeah someone mentioning declan mckenna's album in a positive way ‼️‼️
Caligula's Horse's new album (Charcoal Grace) and Imminence's new album (The Black) are ones that have made big splashes, but the new Cyberiam (Unobtanium) is a beautifully introspective album from them
My top 5 so far would be:
1. BMTH - Nex Gen
2. The Story So Far - I Want to Disappear
3. Aaron West and the Roaring Twenties - In Lieu of Flowers
4. Billie Eilish - Hit Me Hard and Soft
5. Neck Deep - Self Titled
Honorable mention: ERNEST - Nashville, Tennessee
I'm really looking forward to the new Four Year Strong, Post Malone, and State Champs albums. Although the new A Day to Remember song was horrendous, I am still curious to see what their album will sound like. Low expectations, but ADTR has always been one of my favorites so I do have some anticipation for new music.
Gloom Division by iDKHOW honestly I’m surprised I haven’t heard you talk about it.
Some new artists for me to check out, heck yeah!
the best and most underrated album of this year is Bringing back all mankind by mark jones. The best experimental album

6. Lives Outgrown - Beth Gibbons
7. Hit Me Hard And Soft - Billie Eilish
8. The Secret Of Us - Gracie Abrams
9. What Happened To The Heart? - Aurora
10. Love Hate Music Box - Rainbow Kitten Surprise
My favorite album so far this year has been For Keeps by Too Close to Touch, but if Starset releases a new record this year like fans are speculating, then that’ll probably be a serious contender
The fact that you’ve used all my favorite albums in the thumbnail alone tells me this has been an excellent year for music
Releasing this video the day before James Blake dropped an AOTY contender (along with Wall of Eyes) is criminal

20. Demersal - Demersal (screamo/post-metal/blackgaze)

I'm trying to get into that Last Dinner Party album btw. I'll see what else I can grab from here
Great list
I've had Cold Reactor on repeat for six months straight
