Sweet! I’m kind of a RUclips junkie so hearing you say my name kinda freaked me out!🙂
The verse and bridge piano chords, with the exception of the second chord are from Purple Rain. Stone, drummer Regan Hagar and myself got together sometime in June 92 to jam a little. I started a jam with the opening Purple Rain chord and Stone fell in with his guitar part. I must have had my 4 track cassette recorder there cause we worked out the music and I put down the vocal ideas on the remaining 2 tracks at my apartment. Stone was really stoked about the song so he booked us a few weeks in a studio. We cut Buttercup first take on the first day, lead vocal as well. You must have noticed on the record the song is tuned a little flat. That’s because I had rented a sampler keyboard and the piano sample was flat. I was a total noob and didn’t know there were digital pianos! Andy Wood used a sampler live with Mother Love Bone so I thought that was my only option.
We had a blast making the first Brad album.🙂

thank you for the ultra-intimate glimpse into that moment in time. I feel, in a small way, part of the club in this moment :) That's good first take vocals! I did notice the flat thing but I assumed it was just me tuning my guitar poorly :P Question for you:
You're a soulful piano player. I have a track that needs a soulful piano. I'd be ecstatic if you'd consider lending your ivories to it. If you're agreeable I'll email it your way, or perhaps it would be fun for me to post an "inside the creative process" video where i play the song and sort of hum out some of the melodic idea seeds I have for you to run with, or not run with and do your own thing. I assume you now have a keyboard and a computer to plug it into since it's not 1992 anymore ;)

I love this song so much. Back in 93 when I bought this album I had no idea who Shawn Smith was. All I knew was Stone Gossard was in the band and I was all about anything Pearl Jam. Next thing I know I'm in love with Brad and anything Shawn Smith.
I was in Hawaii the week Shawn passed a few weeks back. I had no idea he had left us and on such an incredibly sad day for Seattle rock band history on top of it. He will be missed greatly and I really appreciate this tutorial Ryan. RIP Shawn! Say hello to my sweetiepie for me!
