It is almost as if you are talking right to us. No scripts, yay! I have discovered so many plants watching your channel. I am now obsessed with heucharas and nine barks and have a bunch now! I get a piece of paper out and take notes while watching your videos. It is really nice to see the plants and trees in your space and how you use them, along with how things have worked and not worked for you. I am in zone 4 and get frustrated sometimes not being able to get some of the plants you are able to, but I did get a corral berry, but no beauty berry for me... The title of Chad is, heavy equipment operator, and when its virgin land like that its called, pioneering. The driveway should be slightly higher than natural ground with a crown in middle so water drains to either side of driveway, which ends up draining off and out towards main drainages. Otherwise you'll end up with soggy wet spots that'll end up being soft spots which will turn out to be pot holes in the future.😕

For example, our old fashioned hydrangeas bloomed for the first time in 5 years after she followed your advice and fed them Rose-tone. We love the follow-up vlogs. Glad Aaron is wearing a mic, enjoy his comments and your discussions as you plan and workout challenges. The video quality is very good and the editing deserves an award. Hi Laura and Aaron, Donna here! Love what you're doing marrying the two properties! Just a little insight into building a road that will be mostly maintenance free. We live in the exact same zone as you guys, even down to our lovely alkaline soil! We have a long drive way like yours and took the time to build a shale base and domed it in the middle like your excavator man suggested. We have had little to no upkeep on the drive way in 35 years! We also have a business on our property which adds many more vehicles a day than just regular residential traffic! Hope this helps!

I feel you (on a MUCH smaller scale). Before I could do any landscaping at our house we had to dig a French drain, build a deck and retaining wall, and lay a cement walkway and patio. It took a few years to be able to tackle the un-fun stuff, and I got so sick of the mud and weeds, but I’m so glad we did it that way. This year the gardens are finally coming into their own after a few years’ time to establish (and LOTS of clearance plants later 🙃). It’s exciting to track the progress when we look back at old pictures.

What a clever idea with the dumpster latches when the doors are open.

That was really interesting! I don't think I'll get it all spatially till it's done but love seeing the process. It's amazing the amount of planning that goes into the infrastructure! Since you've established yourselves as a John Deere family it was a bit shocking to
see that Case sitting there on the property ! Lol - Farmer joke !!

My father owned a Boring Company and operated heavy equipment that would install pipeline under freeways, etc. for electrical or pipe for drainage. It's really good that you remembered that Aaron. As you said, so much easier now that nothing is there to get in the way and you will definitely need it. Looking really good all around!

I have been with you since moved to this property and many things have been added/changed - like the hay racks. It is so sad to see them go ( lots of great videos) BUT it is so exciting to see the changes you are doing to our (LOL) property. Aaron and your vision is so great and I love how you keep us in the loop for everything - no matter how small or mundane (never). In this video, I felt like we were neighbors and you were showing us what is/has been done. Even just moving the dumpster was neat - especially its new home! If I am this excited, I can just image how excited you two are 🥰.

    Thanks, that was very interesting.
Judging by how the bigger dumpster enclosure looks better I hope you think about Aaron's compost area. That's one huge pile you have of garden waste. Make sure you plan large enough that you don't regret the size later.

I apologize in advance for this rambling mess of an idea but rewatching this video helped me. Plus all the over headshots( I love those). Starting about 16:50 or so, you all are looking at your house from across the new land. My thoughts are more on the space behind you. For starters, at an angle, across the back corner, could be the structure you mentioned previously as a studio/flower arranging room type space. I had thought in addition to that, make it also functional for a pool house, and such. A changing room(s), a bathroom, a shower(maybe even indoor and outdoor). Space to sit and eat , kitchenette type thing for snacks or small gathering ( so you're not going back and forth to the house). Anyway, out front of that structure could be of course garden space but a pond type swimming pool. Something large enough to swim in of course but that you could also have goldfish and koi maybe. Not necessarily waterfalls or anything but something that could look like it was always there, a farm pond type look.
Now you've mentioned your orchard will go off in that general area and could still on either side surrounding the area. I thought you could mix in flowering trees amongst the fruit trees for additional pollination benefits(maybe) and asthetic. Plus if down the road say 10 years you decide you don't want to deal with the fruit trees for any reason, you have other trees already growing to keep the look. Probably more ofa spring event for most of the trees but still a nice vista looking out from your new front lawn, across. You may even consider raising random trees up on gentle slopes for additional height to add privacy. The slight hills, and therefore elevated trees may give you areas behind all of this to hide random structures for tractor parts, extra soils, etc. Maybe even a bee hive or two tucked in somewhere. The structures hidden behind may even be hidden somewhat from your neighbors so they eventually have a nice view too. Anyway just some rambling thoughts. I wish I had more than my phone to send pics of what I'm talking about lol. Thanks for the vids.

My Dad built an aggregate acre-long driveway for his home, with soft curves winding up to his home. One thing he did, you might consider is that he gradually flared the entrance on each side so that his 15ft wide drive was about 25-30ft wide (its actually wider than that I believe)so you could turn in without tearing up the yard.....lol. just as I wrote this, you said you were going to do that! Great minds!! Looks great!😊

Your burn pile will be half its size by spring if you get snow. You should use it as a base for incorporating into your new pile. There is a lot to be learned about composting. Martha Stewart has a great one. I learned 55 years ago from a book called All About Composting from the Rodale collection. A place your size will need a very large size area. Plan on using your tractor forks to do the mixing. I know the three box method is popular, but I did batch composting and used two open areas that were adjacent, U shaped and used the two corners to mix back and forth. Have fun.

Hi Laura and Aaron! It's always interesting to see what you are planning and seeing the work done. The new dumpster enclosure will be really nice and I can see why you'd want to remove the raised bed in that area. It will look so much cleaner. I'm anxious to see the removal of the poles and the lines getting buried. Thank you for taking us along on your journeys!

Benjamin must be in heaven everytime Chad comes with his big machines!! As someone with a long laneway you may want to rethink keeping that road level and bump it up a bit for rain and melting snow run off. Food for thought.

You may want to fill the posts in the trash enclosure with concrete. I think the garbage truck will knock those over,, even if they are set in concrete. That will give you even more protection for the new enclosure. Looks great.
