oh GOD, the production of this song is OUTSTANDING just the intro alone deserves a Grammy, haters can say whatever they want but Katy fucking delivered in this album!
She is a fucking queen
The best song of her career IMO. People are so cringe. Literally wrote her off because of a haircut and the public was ready for a new famous woman to tear down. The most common criticism of her prior to this album was that she was fake. The main criticisms of this album were things like people thinking the lyrics are bad (lyrics that clearly made the cut because she wrote them herself - no professional writer would write the ping pong line in Dance With the Devil,) that the album was too all over the place (showing that it had less corporate direction, meaning she did have more control, because her label would have kept the album more "in line" with her image,) and that IT WAS TOO SERIOUS FOR KATY PERRY. The woman constantly being attacked for being "fake." She releases an album that's significantly more serious than her previous albums and.... people are mad it's too serious.
Wrong place and wrong time honestly. She was on top of the world, and it had been a while since the public had some fun tearing down a female popstar like that. Then she changed her signature hair, and since the public treats female popstars like communal pets, this was a no-no, because now she wasn't sex bombshell 1950's pinup Katy Perry anymore.
Now that she's had a baby she's sexually invalid to a lot of people so now they've let up on shitting on her so much (unless she ends up gaining weight of course.)

I think she is really close to her parents, but she doesn't agree with them about most things. They are conservative Christians who don't really see any virtue in her career. But they are still devoted to each other which is pretty special given their discord about lifestyle. She calls her mom during all of her Witness tour shows.

It was in my opinion one if her most spiritually charged body of work ( the album). Like you can feel EVERYTHING. Every line.
It always made me ask myself what type of BS might be going in behind the scenes in the industry to inspire some of her lyrics and approach on certain songs ( Chained to the right, Power, Mind Maze, Witness...).
And I'll always be happy to not have bandwagoned when the world was soooo against her and this album.

It's not the Album. It's Katy. She really fucked herself with her fake woke activism and that abnoxious therapy session she streamed online. She even ventured to call her album "purposeful pop" just to shock us with Bon Appetit as second single. Also, people just didn't f*** with that short haircut. Plain poor handling of an era by miss Katy at the time.
5 years late but i personally think they could’ve picked much better songs to make singles from this album (except for “chained to the rhythm”). This album is far better than her most recent release “smile” as well. I love pop music but hate when artists “play it safe” which is exactly what happened with smile. It makes sense that happened though after the general public’s reaction to Witness.

It's a dream album 😍 that many artists couldn't even achieve...
It literally didn't flop. It just performed significantly worse than PRISM did for a huge number of reasons, almost all of which were out of her control, and the public was thirsty for a likable woman to tear down since that's one of America's favorite national passtimes. The reality is that no matter what she did she was going to drop off in success with this album, because she reached unattainable heights. The public cannot maintain fascination with a celebrity for a tremendous length of time - that's why the term "imperial phase" was created. Katy was leaving her imperial phase through no fault of her own. The public saw shades of Britney and pounced.
I actually have faith Katy will have a second wind massive resurgence though. The public is largely over hating her at this point, and she is genuinely one of the most likable celebrities to ever exist.

This was her Blackout, PERIODT. Watch in 10 years time it be cherished. Tsunami, Roulette, Power, and Bigger than me were lyrically and thematically so ahead of their time and experimental in sound. Theres almost a witchy energy i feel whenever i listen to this album, I feel enchanted and picture abandoned houses and vintage nature type shit. A classic in my book.
