  • In this video I will show you how to replace the internal battery in a non-comfort access BMW key fob. This remote uses a VL2020 battery with the battery leads spaced 90 degrees apart. I found mine on Ebay for searching for VL2020 BMW specific version for about $12. To get into the remote we must cut it in half this requires some force but be gentle to not stab deep into the remote with your blade so that you do not damage the circuit board inside.

    Many thanks, I found this very helpful. Getting into the old fob was a real pain, and when I had transferred the innards and new battery into a new case, it didn't work at first. I tried the new fob in the ignition to see whether I could at least start the car. This was successful, and afterwards the fob worked fine at unlocking and locking the doors as well. I hope this helps anyone who has problems at first with their new battery.

    Thanks to poster for the quality video. Quick heads up to everyone from an electrical engineer - the VL 2020 is a low-current rechargeable lithium battery. BMW recharges the fob battery while it’s in ignition. Replacing VL2020 with CR2025, BR2025 and similar will function as a stopgap measure- but in the longer term you stand to damage the recharging circuit on fob circuit boards and/or cause battery leakage if you don’t put a VL2020 in the fob. CR, BL battery materials don’t like having electric current jammed into them…

    Thank you! I wonder if they make an aftermarket case for it once you cut it open so you don’t have to superglue it

    you got a real Wayne from Letterkenny vibe. did you have a key battery warning on the dash before it was dead?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  2 года назад +1

      😂😂😂 and no I didn’t get a battery warning. That fob just only worked very close to the car for a while.

    One of my components is defective. Can someone tell me which component is between the battery and the transponder? Directly above the quartz, in the middle of the board. What kind of component is this (resistor, etc.) or what does it say?

  • @43forlife
    @43forlife 3 года назад +5

    Fun fact: BMW won't do this for you. You have to buy a new key for around €360

    Hey you don't need an exact vl2020 battery to make it work you can instead even use any cheap 3V battery which will work

      not the best idea as the car will actually charge this battery when the fob is inserted. that's why the fob isnt openable like other ones, because you have to put it in the dash to start the car. The spare fob going dead is common as they sit without being used in the car for long amounts of time.

      @griffinwright7688 u can get the same voltage battery and cut the metal around the battery and slide a new battery with the same voltage like a 2025 battery and put the key back together without having to solder a new one.

      @haydarturkmen1198 that I'm not sure probably need a new control or check the button for damage on the motherboard

    Hey there mate, I accidentally bought vl2030 instead of vl2020. The vl2030 is slightly bigger but you can still fit it in. Would it still work?

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 года назад

      Not sure if it's the same voltage or what the specific difference is. I couldn't find details on the 2030 in a quick search

    • @Calvinm

      The battery I replaced was the original battery from 2007. So about 13 years. The new one is still working great.

    hello is there a positive and negative point before i solder

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 года назад +1

      There is, but I don't think you can put in the battery backwards because of the way the pins on the battery are arranged! Have a look at the old battery before you take it out just to be sure.

    How would you do it without a solder sucker

    • @Calvinm
      @Calvinm  3 года назад

      Heat the solder joint until it flows/liquidy and at the same time use some tweezers to pull out the battery leg. With both battery legs out clean up the pad on the board with your soldering iron. It's possible without a solder sucker, just a little more challenging pulling the leg out. Good luck!
