  • Young Frankenstein, officially known as The New Mel Brooks Musical Young Frankenstein, is a musical with a book by Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan and music and lyrics by Brooks. It is based on the 1974 comedy film of the same name written by Brooks and Gene Wilder and directed by Brooks, who has described it as his best film. It is a parody of the horror film genre, especially the 1931 Universal Pictures adaptation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and its 1939 sequel, Son of Frankenstein. After tryouts in Seattle, Washington and four weeks of previews, the musical opened on Broadway on November 8, 2007 to mixed reviews. The Broadway production closed on January 4, 2009 after 30 previews and 484 performances. A U.S. tour started on September 29, 2009 in Providence, Rhode Island.

It was also inspired by James Whales' "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935). Easily argued as the superior of the three Karloff Frankenstein pictures.

Megan's voice sounds like someone is torturing a kitten. It makes nails on a chalkboard sound like sweet music.

Yeah, you think Mel Brooks was trying to fool the audience who expected him to cast Elizabeth with someone as talented and as much of a singer as Madeleine Kahn, like her biggest fan Kristin Chenoweth. xD

AingealGrl I stand corrected, somewhat. I just learned that an October 2006 reading of this show’s first draft actually had Kristin Chenoweth playing Elizabeth. Plus, Roger Bart was in the reading as Igor originally, while Frederick was played by Brian d’Arcy James(who was thus joined with his future Shrek costar, Sutton Foster, who played Inga of course).
I imagined Kristin could’ve stayed with the show for it’s final development, if it weren’t for the fact that she was already busy with her role in the TV show “Pushing Daisies” by the time this show premiered on Broadway. :P
