George you are the best, past or present public speaker in Britain by far and that includes Churchill and I think morally you are unmatched. Thank you and keep moving forward until victory.

Tony Benn will always be remembered as a man of principle and integrity. He was a champion of the poor and the working class. One day we will live up to his ideals because he has certainly touched a whole generation of people who yearn for an ever more just world.

He was a man with principles who was in politics because he believed in doing good deeds. He never sought status and fortune, and he only accepted power as a means to a noble ends. RIP Tony Benn

"The Man" has left the building.
I didn't go out today and worked from home.
I felt a quiet inward peace all day with Tony going in and out of my mind.
It really was a beautiful sunny day.
    Tony would've loved it, I'm sure . . .
    RIP Tony Benn.
    Thanks George.
    That was a beautiful tribute.

I can't believe that George Galloway did not go to university. This man routinely makes mincemeat of Oxbridge educated journalists and politicians. What a great inspiration for autodidactics the world over.

Wonderful words befitting a real leader George Galloway. Tony Benn will indeed be missed by many around the World. He was the definition of hope and a leader to look up to in a world under siege by his our common enemy. God speed Mr Benn.

Tony Benn, was the minister for the Industrial Reorganisation commission under the Wilson government 1966 - 1970, he spend millions of tax payers money on forcing companies to merge, such as Leyland motor corporation and British motor holdings. Other companies were forced to merge such as the formation of international computers limited. These companies developed poor management, and slowly fell apart. Not only were mergers forced but there was also a huge amount of asset stripping, that disenfranchised much of British industry. In the space of 4 years Tony Benn had done enough damage to British industry to see many companies fail and many collapse at the expense of hundreds of thousands of job over the following 2 decades. This is the reason why British industry fell apart in the late 60s and 70s... Yet he had the cheek to blame the decline in British industry on Thatcher! He never apologised for his actions and conveniently ignored any responsibility... He was a terrible irresponsible individual!
Try reading a little bit about the Industrial Reorganisation Corporation.
      books.google.co.uk/books?id=ctBGh_HyHxcC&pg=PA72&dq=industrial+reorganisation+corporation&hl=en&sa=X&ei=4JYFU7P4OcWGhQeAzoE4&ved=0CD0Q6AEwAw#v=onepage&q=industrial%20reorganisation%20corporation&f=false

      You are so wrong.
it was not hundreds of thousands of jobs that he destroyed. It was milloins of jobs.
      Everything else you got correct.

suburbenyobbo you make good points and you may also concede the era you refer to heralded consolidation in the steel and auto sectors in the West and the list of other British companies since which have also collapsed due to market forces and more likely management inertia is lengthy. I too like to blame politicians and normally start by calling for Tony Blair to be charged with treason; I'd Neal Kinnock to a list for incompetence and for lacking guts to fight for others

Well said George. At the end of the day? you cant argue against facts. You cant argue against truth and Tony Benn 'always' spoke the truth and always backed up whatever he said with facts. I can remember seeing Mr.Benn on the telly, talking to people in the street. 1 man came up to Tony and asked him a question on some matter. Tony replied and asked the man what he did for a living. The man, almost with an apologetic tone, replied stating that he was 'just' a bus driver. Mr.Benn looked at him and said, quite sincerely,' why do you apologize? thats an honest and important job so please, dont, be proud of it. I can also remember Tony in a discussion about pay. He asked, 'what is more important! the cleaner who works in a hospital or the doctor?'. Naturally the reply came back 'the doctor because he's studied for years etc. Tony said, no! they are equally important because if you did'nt have the people to clean the hospitals? where would that leave the doctors?'. Its not a matter of the doctor not deserving the salary he receives or commands! The point Tony was attempting to get across was, the fact that the cleaner's role in the big picture was of equal importance and therefore deserving a wage that would entitle that very same cleaner, a decent and acceptable standard of living. THIS is what Tony Benn was all about. George is right when he says that it is highly unlikely that this kind of warrior for the working class people, not only on the UK but around the world over, will ever be seen again, certainly not in my lifetime anyways. Tony Benn was not only a great politician. He was a warm, kind hearted, beautiful 'human being' and that is a very, very rare thing, especially in todays society. Thanks for your magnificent tribute George.

Tony Benn, a true gentleman with principles who spoke truths and loved peace, equality and humanity, what a contrast to what we have nowadays.
Im sure you are at peace Mr Benn and you will never be forgotten by the vast majority of the British public who remember your kindness and humanity.
    God bless you.
And thank you George, Im sure Tony appreciated your thoughts and memories.

Great Eulogy George. I met Mr Tony Benn at a stop the war march 2003 Trafalgar Square, Myself and a number of comrades came down from York as part of a contingent from the newly formed Socialist Labour party. Mr Benn saw our placard from York and just said a few warm words. His speeches have always amazed and inspired me. He will be sorely missed. However, we must always remember that the power within us is greater than any fear before us.

The wealthy privileged elite were terrified of losing their unearned wealth and power ,so since the overthrow of the Russian monarchy ,they have mounted expeditions against Russia during the civil war and war of intervention 1920 .Millions of peasants and workers were executed ,but the Soviets (workers councils) seen them off .War of nonstop propaganda continued ,pausing only during WW2 .Then resuming with renewed fury after the Red Army destroyed the Nazis and saved the European bourgeoisie inc. Churchill & co.from the gas ovens .If the Nazis had defeated USSR ,Hitlers legions who had swept through Europe practically unopposed ,would have taken more than just the Channel Islands .

The flag waving working class Royalist are the most politically naive people in Europe .The Scots much more politically aware .Many Scots & other people in the UK are pissed off by the adoration of the great unwashed peasants cheesy Royals ,.waving their Union flags in the down market Med resorts and really believing Britain won WW2 .Got to tell them lol. ,It was the Soviets in Europe and the Americans in the Pacific. Our poorly trained ,armed & led armies ,were whacked in France ,Norway,Greece ,Crete ,Malaya ,Burma ,Hong kong ,Singapore & gave up the Channel Islands ,without a fight .The battle of Britain air war ,was fought at a time ,AXIS forces were mopping up the French and European armies & preparing millions of troops, aircraft ,tanks for the big one. Barbarossa,! General told Hitler to leave the UK for dessert ,they hoped to have Russia before winter set in, the north .We fought 10 Divs of Africa Corps ,mainly ITALIAN TROOPS ,would you believe trying to save a colony . ,USSR were facing over 200 Divs, MOST Brtits did not see a German till D.Day June 1944..A lot of them were elderly Ukrainian Fascist .like the ones that overthrew the elected Ukrainian Government and put fear into many many people in the Crimea.Funny old world .Isn't it ?

I was fortunate enough to meet Mr Benn in Finsbury Park in 1995. I was a uniformed police officer. We were walking in the same direction so we had a very interesting chat for 10 minutes as we walked along. There’s no politicians of his calibre today.

Dear George, Thank you for your heartfelt tribute to the beloved Tony Benn. I listened with pleasure to your anecdotes and am grateful for your contribution toward the liberation of the people from the hands of the corporocrats who dominate our political process. Can I offer a word of advice reg your reference to TB as being 'a prince among men.' I believe the use of that word is to unintentionally do the man a disservice.
TB was a politician. In Machiavelli's book, 'The Prince' he offers advice to elites/politicians who desire to acquire power above all else, i.e, above moral principles. TB was absolutely opposed to that form of politic. He practiced telling Truth to Power and he told the Truth to The People. He was not a 'prince among men' He was a Man of The People. A Democrat in the true sense of the word. We understand your use of the word 'prince' in the context you have used it ~ but words are important ~ words can cause confusion if not used carefully and correctly ~ like the words used below by the enemies of the people who like to advertise their ignorance of reality. Best Regards, X

A great man the likes of which will not return. A defender of people like me: the common man, a defender of civil rights and liberties, a powerful intellect, a great orator. The labour movement and indeed the parliamentary scene is far, far poorer today.

john howe Tony Benn, Dennis Skinner, George Galloway, Barbara Castle etc were as we all know part of old Labour. This is why the party that we now know as new Labour was created, because old Labour would NEVER have been elected with any of these people (dinosaurs). The majority of the British electorate did NOT agree with Tony Benn.

    • @johnhowe50
      @johnhowe50 10 лет назад +1

Whether the majority agreed with Tony Benn or not they can not deny he spoke the truth as he saw it. That is something that none of today's politicos would ever do. They just spin, and spin and lie. Benn had more integrity than that. The real problem with old labour were not the elected representatives (who were often highly educated thinkers) but some of the unions.
I would rather have lived under a Benn government than MacMillan, Heath and certainly not a Thatcher one.

Earth 2 Do not include Barbara Castle, who was right wing Labour, in a list of lefties. Shows how much you know about politics. New Labour was a right wing hijack of the Labour Party, interested solely in continuing the capitalist agenda. Miliband and his crew now distance themselves fron the tag because it is linked to Blair, the war criminal and multi millionaire, who had not an ounce of Socialist thought in his body but who, like all right wing, ambitious Labour politicians, use the Party for their own careers. There is now no difference between the main parties, all right wing and signed on to capitalism. That's why voter apathy is so pronounced.

Let the Big Ben be not silenced, but ring out in honour of Tony Benn. Let the people come out in their thousands for his funeral and show the hypocrites that unlike the tax financed state funeral forThatcher, this is the final journey for a man of people. Make the occasion a solemn protest. He would have liked that, as a final act of protest against the establishment.

I went to see Tony Benn speak in Brighton around 1990/91, it was a small venue if I recall but Galloway is correct - it was utterly electric and mesmerising, such a powerful experience - I was only about 23 or something but it was profound x
