    The USB is also used as a MIDI. You can use Logic Pro sounds if you only plug the USB-A to USB-B from the Nord to your laptop.

    @2:15, what is the difference if simply using 1 channel goes to DI and then to mixer, then the mixer automatically outputs it in stereo anyway am I right? Kindly enlighten what’s the benefit of adding one more channel, not unless channel 2 is exclusively for synth/pads and channel 1 is only piano? Then it makes sense to really use both to get both tones. Otherwise, one is enough? Hmmm I’m confused. I appreciate the feedback. thanks 🙏

      @MyKeysToMusic  3 года назад +2

      @onzkicg Thanks for your question here and I first want to say that I largely agree with the point you are making and you are not wrong. Mono versus Stereo depends in large part on what you are connecting to. Let me do my best to explain this situation. So, winding the clock back a bit to the 80s and 90 when I did those very first gigs as a young semi-pro keyboard player, I would play gigs where I would send a single output (via the jack labeled L/Mono) to a DI box into a mixing board and of course, you would hear the keyboard out of both speakers and all was well with the world. The audience wouldn't know the difference or come to realize that the keyboard was sending a mono signal to both speakers.
      I suspect that the majority of the world still does things in this way when it comes to small gigs in bars/clubs etc. Now, the Nord keyboards are stereo keyboards and you'll hear noticeable differences whenever you put them in a non-stereo situaiton. The Nord pianos, in particular, take a big hit when they are not presented in stereo - so much so that they have a "Mono" button on the front panel in the event you are in a situation where you cannot present a stereo output. Besides the pianos, stereo effects such as the rotary speaker and the "Ping pong" effect on the delay won't work as well if you are running in mono.
      You'll also see that the industry has embraced this fact by readily selling stereo DI boxes now (they are commonplace) and stereo keyboard amps. Sweetwater explains this phenomenon well in this brief article here: www.sweetwater.com/insync/stereo-vs-mono-keyboard-amps-whats-difference/
      Finally, here is a nice eight-page thread on the Nord User Forum related to mono versus stereo: www.norduserforum.com/general-nord-forum-f29/do-you-play-live-in-mono-or-stereo-t6887.html
      Hope that helps a bit. I had the exact same head-scratching moment when I first decided to research the topic back when a question was first brought up. 👍🏼

What are the best small studio monitors to make the stage 3 sound amazing... looking at iloud MTM vs Nord Monitors... play a lot of electric piano, jazz funk. Want monitors for home use practice. @Mark Burg congrats on your new Stage 3! The Electro 3 was my first Nord board so I can relate to what an upgrade this is. The Nord monitors are supposed to be very nice for home studio work and are purpose-built for Nord so that has to say something. ruclips.net/video/amsU3dbkpxY/видео.html (I don't own them so can't speak from personal experience).
      I would also check out the discussions on the Nord User Forum about amplification: www.norduserforum.com/accessories-and-amplification-f8/nord-amplification-faq-t16772.html
      I don't have much more advice than that for this but if you do go the MTM route, you probably have more flexibility for other stuff (other PA work) with those versus the Nord Monitors.

    Does using the headphone jack disable channel 1 and 2 outputs, or can you use simultaneously?

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 года назад

      Hello @Scott Weisel Great question and I can see why this would be a question to ask. 9 times out of 10, when a person goes to plug in headphones into an electronic device, the "speakers/outputs" tend to become disabled. Such is the case with my Kawaii Digital Piano. I plug the phones in and the speakers become disabled. And traditionally, this is what a typical person wants to do. However, on most pro keyboards used for live performance such as the Nord line of keyboards (including the Stage 3), plugging in headphones will NOT disable the outputs whatsoever.
      This can be a double edge sword. For example, when you're plugged into a Pro PA system on stage and you've already done your soundcheck, it becomes "impossible" to audition sounds personally without also driving audio to the main PA. If you don't have direct control over the PA yet you need to audition sounds or program sounds without also driving sound to the front of house, you can consider getting your own personal mixing board and plug in your headphones into that. Then you can drive sound to just the headphones or both. Beware, however, bringing your own "mixing board" to a performance can sometimes make the sound people crazy and depending on the kind you get, you can introduce unwanted noise and complication to your audio chain. Perhaps there are more ways to accomplish this and my live experience is limited to bars/restaurants and small clubs.
      Things might be different if you are playing in larger places and I just don't know what the "big boys" use to solve this issue. But, I've always enjoyed having my own mixing board fixed on my rig and available to my left hand. To see what I'm talking about here, something like this might do the trick (affiliate link): amzn.to/3J58Y9M

    • @MyKeysToMusic

      Hello @Andy Roop the "Monitor In" will channel through to the headphone as well as Output 1 and 2 only. If you send your Nord keyboard sounds out 3 and 4 then whatever is coming in from the Monitor In jack would be isolated to the Nord headphones only at that point. But be careful, the Organ with the rotary speaker on will not sound through outputs 3 and 4. Also note there is no independent volume control or routing settings for he monitor in. It's really a one-trick pony and meant for rehearsal.

      Hello @Frijo Francis Thanks for following the channel! So, make sure you are running BOTH 1/4 jacks (Output 1 and 2 - one for Left and one for Right). You need to run your keyboard in stereo for it to sound good. Otherwise it will likely sound "phased out" and flat. Also, make sure the keyboard isn't in "Mono" mode - you'll see that button in the middle of your keyboard below the Panel A button. Mono mode is for when you have it going to a single speaker keyboard Amp or a Leslie Mono speaker. Ideally you want to run out in stereo - especially for the pianos to sound better. Hope that helps! Also, start with a "flat" EQ setting on your amplification and tweak from there.

      "When shipped, the Nord Stage 3 is configured to output audio through the Ch 1&2 outputs. Refer to the System Menu section on page 52
      for details on how to utilize the Ch 3&4 outputs, in stereo or mono configurations." Here is a link to the manual for those watching: www.nordkeyboards.com/sites/default/files/files/downloads/manuals/nord-stage-3/Nord%20Stage%203%20English%20User%20Manual%20v1.X%20Edition%20C.pdf

    Hi Marc! Thanks for the video! May I ask for your opinion and advice? We have a Nord Stage 2 EX in church. Right now the Nord outputs via Channel 1 to a DI Box using 1/4 mono cable. I get told a lot that the Nord's volume is very low, even though I have the instrument's master volume at max. I am presuming that it's because the Nord is only outputting through Channel 1. My I ask if it is feasible to run a splitter cable? I plan to use one of those 1/4 inch TRS stereo to dual 1/4 inch TS Mono Y-splitter cable. The idea is to connect the two dual TS mono ends to channel 1 and channel 2 out of the Nord and then the TRS end to the single input of the DI Box. I am only able to connect to a DI Box because that's the only current option to connect to the FOH. Hoping to hear your advice on the matter, thanks!

    • @MyKeysToMusic
      @MyKeysToMusic  2 года назад +1

      Hello @Randy Santa-Ana Great to hear from you! I have been keeping an eye on your channel for the last several months ever since you released the video with the portable PA system. Good content and always from the heart 🧡so thank you. Now, let's talk about cabling and setup.
      *Best Option*
      Ideally, you want to run things in stereo whenever possible. My best advice would be to invest in a second DI box. Run Channel one with a standard TS cable out to DI Box one and channel 2 to a new DI Box two. This should give you the best-sounding setup for FOH. This is how all the pros do it (at least the ones I work with that play large arenas and such).
      If a second channel is simply not available in the PA for FOH, then we have to go with plan B. Here you have some options:
      *Option 1:*
      Run a TS cable from output 1 to the DI. (Both ends are a TS). Nord Volume should be at 3/4. The mixer for FOH should be able to get whatever volume you need from that point forward. If not, they may have to increase their gains on the board itself. If that's still not loud enough, you may have to introduce a pre-amp of some sort. Although, I would find it hard to believe the overall gain wouldn't be loud enough. With this option select "MONO Out" found on your keyboard right below panel A. This will reconfigure the effects and such to better suit a mono speaker. This setup however is NOT IDEAL. It's not presenting the Nord keyboard in the best light.
      *Option 2:*
      I hesitate to list this option because it requires a stereo DI box that can handle a single input configured as a TRS and I'm not sure if that's what you have or not. Most DI boxes are mono (expecting a guitar, bass, or some other monophonic instrument). They do make stereo DI boxes but they typically accept separate inputs 1 and 2 (rather than a single input expecting a TRS cable). So, if you find out that you do in fact have a stereo DI box, then you can do exactly what you are proposing in your original question. That would be 2 TS ends into the Nord converted to a single TRS input into the stereo DI box. If your DI is a typical mono type, I would avoid this option altogether mainly because the DI box is likely expecting a TS cable, not a TRS cable. Here again, it may depend on the DI box. Certainly, it's a low-cost experiment if you want to try it anyway.
      *Option 3:*
      If "volume" is the issue, you could consider first amplifying the keyboard with an on-stage amp (preferably stereo) and then running out to the PA. This gives you the added benefit of being able to hear yourself a little better and you can boost the overall volume a bit. I've done this setup many times as it keeps the bulk of the amplification away from the PA which is especially important if you intend on playing bass with your keyboards. It really depends on a lot of other factors and the power of your PA too. You may also find that the EQ/fidelity coming from a keyboard amp is a tad better than a typical PA as it's typically better suited for the wide range of keyboards sounds. In other words, you can EQ your boards from an Amp to sound better than the PA at times. Again, it really depends on your overall setup there.
      Hope that helps clarify things and it sounds like it's time to do some experimenting with your sound team during a dedicated rehearsal to tweak all this. If there are more questions or if you have results to share, do come back and add to our thread. Thanks! - Marc 🎹

      @@MyKeysToMusic Thank you, Marc, for such comprehensive options! I learned a lot just from what you have generously wrote and shared here! Now that you have mentioned Option 2, I will go and check if the DI box that the Nord is connected to is a stereo box or not so that I can go with the option that I was proposing. If not, then I probably would speak to our set-up guy and maybe request for a second DI box or a stereo type, or maybe just invest in one and donate it to our church so I can run the Nord in stereo. We don't have a true sound engineer and most of those who set up the instruments at our church are all volunteers, hence the guess works! Many thanks again for your recommendations, Marc! My Keys To Music Most actually do at that price like the Korg Kronos 2, Yamaha Montage, Roland Fantom, even the Dexibell Vivo S9 has it. For a price more expensive than these boards that do way more and considering since it’s the flagship synth of Clavia. They should’ve thought this through. Doesn’t take away from the Nord since I love it the most out of all of them.

      @@tuneunleashed Really good points here. People are often confused why the Nord family doesn't have balanced outputs. I keep a running list of wish list items here (just because) and I'll add this one too.

      @@MyKeysToMusic I’ve also been frustrated with no balanced outputs...what is your recommendation to work with this? When I play with a band I plug into two separate DI’s (one for L, one for R), then balanced xlr cables from DI’s to mixing desk. Is this the best option, or are there other/better ways to manage this? Thank you!

      @@soanna4961 Thanks for your question. I have yet to find a better way. However, someone told me about a solution where you can use a single DI box instead of two DIs for this making one less "box" on stage. Nothing particularly magical or earth-shattering about this solution, but it looks to be a pretty slick unit and one that you could throw in the bag for the next gig. This must be a thing because they even show a picture of a stereo keyboard as one of the screenshots (affiliate link): amzn.to/33Jn54E
