As someone pointed out on another very reaction to video, so I'm not taking credit for the idea, this concert took place as Metallica was literally in the process of becoming the most popular rock/heavy rock band in the world. Their album was climbing up the charts in the USA as they were touring Europe at this time so, ACDC were the "headliners", this was the last tour they ever did as an "opening act". So we're literally watching 1.6 million, or 350,000 people, whatever it is, rocking out to a band as they literally hitting the pinnacle of international fame and stardom. Pretty cool stuff.
In the early '90s they were huge all around the world, especially with the Black album it WAS A MEGA MEGA commercial success. Towards the end of the '80s 'And justice for All' really started to bring them commercial success, but The Black album exploded beyond, what anyone would have imagined 🤘

The name of the song at the intro is called "The ecstasy of gold" written by Ennio Morricone. It was from the Clint Eastwood movie The good, the bad and the ugly. Metallica started using it as an intro in the very early 80's and now own the rights to the song.
This concert actually had several bands. AC/DC, Metallica,The Black Crowes, Pantera, but of the 4 I'd say AC/DC and Metallica were best known at the time there. It was also the first open-air concert allowed there at the end of the cold war, and it was free. However, all of that aside, I could not imagine being on that stage in front of that many people rocking out to my music. It must have been surreal.
Late 80s early 90s Metallica were Gods, completely untouchable. I saw my first concert in the summer and 86 tail end of the Puppets tour and then saw them twice on the Justice tour 🤘💀🤘
In the video the members were, James Hetfield (Rhythm guitar, Vocals), Kirk Hammet (Lead guitar, backup vocals-ish), Jason Newsted (Bass, back vocals), and Lars Ulrich (Drummer). As of 2024 everything is the same except Robert Trujillo (Bass, backup vocals) is their new bassist. Jason Newsted left the band in 2001.

In 1991 the boys of Metallica were in their late 20's... And they have been awesome for almost 43 years now and still going strong. Just saw them in June and it was incredible, again. They weren't there to see Metallica. They were there to see the band that came on right after. That band which added an additional 120,000 behind the airfield was none other than ac/dc, the main headliner.
The American Embassy was about 3 miles away. It averaged 96 decibels inside the Embassy. 120,000 people went to hospitals the next day for hearing loss. No alcohol was sold but people could bring whatever they wanted. Pantera fired up the drunk crowd right from the start and the military started beating people. Then the crowd started a rain if glass bottles onto the soldiers. By the time Metallica took the stage, opening for AC/DC, the violence was over and many soldiers were partying with the crowd. The helicopters were forcing air into the crowd to cool them down and supply oxygen. 3 months later the USSR collapsed.

It was a "MONSTERS OF ROCK" concert the first American rock concert in Russia at that time. Yes 1.6 million people attended and they had to have the military do the security and that is why you see the military helicopter at the beginning of the video. Unfortunately 36 people did die during the whole concert from the time that people started showing up until the last person left. It was the biggest recorded concert in history!!!!
It wasn't the first. The Moscow Peace festival on 12th and 13th of August 1989 had Bon Jovi, Cinderella, Skid Row, Scorpions, Motley Crue and Ozzy Osbourne. That was the USSR and Russia's first major concession to western music being allowed. It is important to note The Berlin Wall was still up when this happened. it didn't come down until November that year Iron Maiden had earlier in 84 had played dates in Poland, Hungary, and Yugoslavia when they were still part of the Eastern Soviet Bloc. But playing in Russia never mind Moscow itself was still unthinkable then
Your mother must be in her 50s. She sounds like someone I certainly would of been hanging with. All the bands you said she loved and listened to, were all the bands I loved and listened to as well. The Bass PLayer is Jason Newstead. The band dealt with their grief over Cliff Burton's death by endlessly hazing Jason. He was a trooper becuase he loved the band. The concert was happened after the Soviet Union collapsed, styudents were revolting. In their negotiation to return to peace they asked for a free rock concert. It was AC/DC, Metallica, Pantera and a couple other bands. The uniformed people are Russian Soldiers. I would suggest Creeping Death from this concert next.
It's a long-standing tradition that Metallica plays Ennio Morricone's "The Ecstasy of Gold" over the speakers right before they hit the stage. When the crowd hears that music swell, they start to freak out! lol :-)
On September 28th, 1991, at the very tail end of the Cold War, in Moscow, on this abandoned airfield, Metallica played to 1.6 million people. That's the same size as, like, Philadelphia or Phoenix, Arizona.
Great reaction guys but remember there were 4 bands at this concert and AC/DC headlined this concert. Anthrax and The Black Crows were there also, I think.
@Pingkonk You are referring to Cliff Burton the original bass player for Metallica who was killed when there tour bus had crashed and flipped over while Cliff was asleep in his bed and thrown out the window and pinned under the bus
@Pingkonk Dave Mustain was hired to play bass after Cliffs horrific death but Dave had a severe drinking problem which caused much turmoil in the band and they voted him out
NO! The Bassist for Metallica was Ron McGovney. Mustaine, yes with an E, was the Lead guitarist but didn't appear on any albums. Mustaine toured with the band and co-wrote four songs from Kill 'Em All & 2 from Ride the Lightning. McGovney basically left the band due to Mustaine's antics and unruly additions with alcohol & drugs.

They did not reach the Guinness Book of Records (while the record for attendance of the free Jean-Michel Jarre show in 1989 in Paris, which was attended by 1 million 300 thousand spectators, is held), but maybe this is for the best." This was epic because of the crowd, the music, and the political ramifications. Some interesting notes... the people at the back were over a mile and a half from the stage, the helicopters were actually using their rotors to push fresh air down into the crowd because people were passing out. They only expected 250,000 to show and don't know how many are actually there because they lost count at around the million mark. Dark side.. approx. 45 people died, some from a mosh pit that formed because the military thought it was a fight and tried to break it up which went badly. Today looking at it, all I can think of are bathrooms.
You should react to their boxed set from 89 justice tour and 92 to 93 for the black album it sold 15 million copies and made them the biggest band ever touring nonstop with no breaks
This! We were young like Taylor mentioned she was listening to Metallica when she was 14. The internet wasn't really a thing back then and growing up I listened to music that was in my generation.
The helicopters are ON:LY there to blow air onto the 1.6 MILLION PEOPLE in the crowd. People were dying from dehydration and heatstroke - understandably. So the Helicopters cooled people down flying above! o cool and fkd at the same time!!!
Changing the subject just a little bit I’m a Geezer & this is o e of the first videos of yours I’ve seen. I did hear you say you don’t like “country” music. Zac Brown is a country artist/group Check out THEIR cover - live at Napa Valley.
If you know Metallica, you may or may not have heard of Stone Called Crazy, yeah? Well, that's actually a cover of Queen. So my recommendation is to listen to Queen's original version of Stone Cold Crazy. Also, at the Freddie Mercury tribut concert in 1992 James Hetfield joined them to do that very song. Queen was Metallica's inspiration.
So im guessing you became a Metallica fan later in their career? I heard Metallica in 1996 from my Dad. He put in the "And Justice For All" album in and it scared me a little. I was very young at the time. I ended up becoming a Metallica fan with "Load" album that same year. As i got older i started to listen to their older stuff and instantly became hooked. Oh and i watch until the end lol
Cliff burton died and was replaced by Jason newsted he quit the band, enter robert trujillo he has been in the band the longest over 20 years. Robert started out in Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, & Ozzy before joining Metallica.
It still cracks me up how Kirk runs around the stage like a kid in the candy store😂 Kirk, Hammett, Riff lord and shredding savior. Jason Newstead bass demon. James Hetfield, rhythm, guitar, vocals and cowardly lion impressionist. Lars Ulrich, tiny brooding, cheesy danish, drummer, and Napster opponent.😂
I didn’t realise that Mud (English rock and roll band, had hits with Tigerfeet, Lonely this Christmas, The cat crept in etc) went through a heavy metal phase, did they change their name to Mudvane????
Cliff Burton & the rest of the band did not have a falling out. Cliff literally was thrown out of Metallica's tour bus and was crushed by it when it landed on him.
this concert was right after the soviet union fell and was renamed russis they wanted to know western culture so they asked the 4 biggest metal bands from the time to be at the concert and they were Metallica, AC DC, Panterra and The Black Crows and the show become the 3rd largest of all time with 1.6 million people there and james hetfield and the other members said that this show would have been their favorite however they said it wasnt because 54 people there died during the show there is another performance you should react to from this concert called Metallica Creeping Death live moscow 1991 please let me know what you think
Sorry to double post - rude, I know. But you saying you were born in '91, and listing your mums favourite bands... REALLY made me feel old. Born in '74 and could never grow a beard like that, and not only was I totally into all of those bands, I can play most on guitar and bass - a little piano. Met most and been interviewed in magazines and tv - back when they were a thing.... Even if you don't play guitar.... borrow one and learn "Youth Gone Wild" by Skid Row... really, really fun to play and excellent at pub gigs.... Oh - and the helicopters.... lots of differing views on those.... SOME say they were spraying the crowd with cold water to reduce illness / injury. Some say they were simply filming for TV etc. And... of course - some say they were government camera units to spot "agitators" and so on. Given recent actions the last one could have been true, but this was '91. Much more likely to be the first one.
Listen here big friend. Don't ever doubt me again. 😂 Great to here your tangent at the end. You both are hilarious! 💜💚

@@Killermcknight honey, I am absolutely crazy about them. Namely because I can’t listen to Prince anymore. I feel like a rock ‘n’ roll widow … also, I was on sick-leave.. 2022 was fun …turns out I should have listened to my White friends in Lutheran school in the 80s🤣🤣
Look up Love Parade Berlin 1999...
The biggest concert inUSA Was + Still is Garth Brooks playing on a harvestfield❤
1.6 MILLION!
Kurt Hammets guitar teacher was Joe Satriani, he came up with all the WAH pedal and Trem bar techniques. See Jor Satriani Surfing with the Alien live.
Watch "Harvester of Sorrow" from the same concert and ask yourself again if you want to be there, lol.
It's a long-standing tradition that Metallica plays Ennio Morricone's "The Ecstasy of Gold" over the speakers right before they hit the stage. When the crowd hears that music swell, they start to freak out! lol :-)
“They’re also big friends” Lmaoo great call back
The bass player had a falling out? In a way.
He fell out of the bus and it landed on him.
On September 28th, 1991, at the very tail end of the Cold War, in Moscow, on this abandoned airfield, Metallica played to 1.6 million people. That's the same size as, like, Philadelphia or Phoenix, Arizona.
They were playing in Moscow, Russia
Over 1.5 million people at same spot listening same show is insane
They were always huge
Your mom is supercool! She likes every band in my favorites lol!! New sub btw. 🙂
He did his mom dirty by mentioning how she raised him on Metallica in the home and then throughout the video proved he knew nothing.
Growing up in the era of Metallica makes me realize how good everything was back then and how fortunate I am
I saw them in 88 in Burlington VT. The crowd was a bit smaller, maybe 2000. The Cult opened.
That’s awesome!
Love Metallica 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤙🤩💛💚🩵
Great reaction guys but remember there were 4 bands at this concert and AC/DC headlined this concert. Anthrax and The Black Crows were there also, I think.
Bass player here is Jason Newsted ❤
The bassist you are referring to is Dave Mustain who after being let go by Metallica formed Megadeth
No. He is not a bassist. He is a guitarist and singer, and was the original lead guitarist for Metallica
@Pingkonk You are referring to Cliff Burton the original bass player for Metallica who was killed when there tour bus had crashed and flipped over while Cliff was asleep in his bed and thrown out the window and pinned under the bus
@Pingkonk Dave Mustain was hired to play bass after Cliffs horrific death but Dave had a severe drinking problem which caused much turmoil in the band and they voted him out
FFS
I believe this was the monsters of rock tour it had acdc headlining. pantera and a few others i went to the uk leg at castle donington. It was epic
MONSTERS of ROCK 1991. Tushino Air Field, Moscow.
AC/DC ruclips.net/video/mt_9x6KN-fo/видео.html
METALLICA
PANTERA ruclips.net/video/h3GV1-uZ8i8/видео.html
and The Black Crowes ruclips.net/video/WtMPlY3duz4/видео.html
This was in moscow rusiya right when the iron curtain fell..
"According to various sources (the exact figure cannot be given, because the entrance was free), on Saturday, from 300 to 400 thousand people visited the airfield in Tushino. They did not reach the Guinness Book of Records (while the record for attendance of the free Jean-Michel Jarre show in 1989 in Paris, which was attended by 1 million 300 thousand spectators, is held), but maybe this is for the best." Moskovsky Komsomolets" 01.10.1991
This was epic because of the crowd, the music, and the political ramifications.
I was there. There was a lockal Moscow band E.S.T. in this show. It was not worst than Metallica and AC/DC.
You should react to their boxed set from 89 justice tour and 92 to 93 for the black album it sold 15 million copies and made them the biggest band ever touring nonstop with no breaks
Jason Newsted was on the Bass then He in my opinion was the BEST Bass Player they ever had. Jason is from my neck of the Woods. Kalamazoo, Michigan!
Then you do not know the strength of the influence of Cliff Burton. That is a shame.
@@JUSSYSMA I SAID.....That was My Opinion. I know all about Cliff. I just think Jason was Better.
Can you imagine listening to bootleg cassettes and finally see the people that played that music that was forbidden and do it freely
I've never seen two people that say they listen to Metallica but know next to nothing about them!! WTF!!???
it's actually very common, you can enjoy listening to a band but not feel the need to go and look up every detail of their history
This! We were young like Taylor mentioned she was listening to Metallica when she was 14. The internet wasn't really a thing back then and growing up I listened to music that was in my generation.
I personally listen to many bands and enjoy their music but I don’t know like 90% of the members’ names.
Jason Newsted is the name of the bassplayer
@@Killermcknight it's a Gen X thing.
The helicopters are ON:LY there to blow air onto the 1.6 MILLION PEOPLE in the crowd. People were dying from dehydration and heatstroke - understandably. So the Helicopters cooled people down flying above! o cool and fkd at the same time!!!
Changing the subject just a little bit
I’m a Geezer & this is o e of the first videos of yours I’ve seen.
I did hear you say you don’t like “country” music.
Zac Brown is a country artist/group
Check out THEIR cover - live at Napa Valley.
It was 500 000 people at this show !
Previous bass player was Jason Newsted.
GOAT
OSHA came in to bust it up and said damn. I'll stay and chill. Lol.
No Phones. The best Times
Cliff burton died and was replaced by Jason newsted he quit the band, enter robert trujillo he has been in the band the longest over 20 years. Robert started out in Suicidal Tendencies, Infectious Grooves, & Ozzy before joining Metallica.
It still cracks me up how Kirk runs around the stage like a kid in the candy store😂
Kirk, Hammett, Riff lord and shredding savior. Jason Newstead bass demon. James Hetfield, rhythm, guitar, vocals and cowardly lion impressionist. Lars Ulrich, tiny brooding, cheesy danish, drummer, and Napster opponent.😂
Why does it crack you up that a 30 yr something has energy on stage? lol
@@Pingkonk because he's just so damn cute
I was there. I just got back to my car. 😂
😂😂 I wouldn’t be surprised 🤣
I didn’t realise that Mud (English rock and roll band, had hits with Tigerfeet, Lonely this Christmas, The cat crept in etc) went through a heavy metal phase, did they change their name to Mudvane????
Haha I'm glad you caught that! Did I do that on purpose 🤔 to get comments like this to boost engagement on the video? 🤔😉
@@Killermcknight
I’d be interested to know how many subscribers know who Mud are!!!
Don't forget that ACDC and Pantera were also there.
Cliff Burton & the rest of the band did not have a falling out. Cliff literally was thrown out of Metallica's tour bus and was crushed by it when it landed on him.
Jason Newsted was the bassist at the time. And yes, that's Kirk on guitar
❤❤❤
🤘
That concert had Ac dc and btw its in Russia russia russia.
this concert was right after the soviet union fell and was renamed russis they wanted to know western culture so they asked the 4 biggest metal bands from the time to be at the concert and they were Metallica, AC DC, Panterra and The Black Crows and the show become the 3rd largest of all time with 1.6 million people there and james hetfield and the other members said that this show would have been their favorite however they said it wasnt because 54 people there died during the show there is another performance you should react to from this concert called Metallica Creeping Death live moscow 1991 please let me know what you think
Much more likely to be the first one.
they tried using the big helicoptor as airconditioning, to whip up some 'fresh' air, it didn't work though
You know this was right after tearing down the Berlin Wall and freedom was being celebratted throughout the world.
