Legend goes it took 25 years for everyone to get home after this, lol. But seriously this is a moment in music history as it is the first western concert in Moscow after the Berlin Wall fell. The Army is there for crowd control.
It is like the end of a war-the Cold War. Exactly the crowd you would expect to celebrate the fall of the Berlin Wall, the first entry of American Rockers into the USSR for a free concert no less. It was on a military base, and absolutely insane. I’ve watched this video more times than I can count. It never gets old. 1991 was an epic time to be alive. 🤟🏼

Story goes they issued over 500,000 tickets for the show so many people showed up for tickets or at least to hear the show that they just opened the gates and let them in.
I mean, clearly Queen Live Aid 1985 has to happen now. Technically the audience AT the concert hall was much smaller, but the total number of live views from live TV was mind-blowing

Metal bands welcoming them to the free world! It doesn’t get any better than that! These people only had bootleg abilities to hear this music. They seemed to have known the songs too. So proud that rock/metal was their first introduction to the free world!
You can probably blame my first husband's mother for some of that! She used to travel to the CCCP regularly. She took records with her and sold them on the black market. She always said that the sales easily paid for the entire trip! (Her husband had a job that required the travel and got him 'privileges').

What's even more mind blowing is how many rock fans there were in Russia as owning or listening to western bands was illegal they only way all these people could have heard the songs was from copies of copies of tapes smuggled over the border or recordings of radio stations made in east Germany. Modern kids have no idea of the struggle their parents went through to listen to their favourite bands let alone those living in oppressive countries.

On September 28, 1991, the Tushino Airfield in Moscow hosted the Monsters of Rock international music festival. AC/DC, Metallica, the Black Crowes, and Pantera all performed, while the metal band Electro Shock Therapy represented the Soviet Union. You should check out some of the other band's performances from this historic concert too.

What many ppl don't realise is that this is from monsters of rock concert featuring live performances by AC/DC, Metallica, Black Crowes, Pantera and E.S.T It was held in the Tushino Airfield in Moscow.
It wasn't a stadium, it was an open field, after the end of USSR and opening of Russia. This Monsters of Rock was insane. I saw it on MTV by that time. They had Metallica, AC/DC, Pantera. Its was the first real concert in Moscow after the Cold War. It was about 1 million people there the biggest concert ever made. They not even know how to behave (the army securities). There was many "police Violence" because they didn't know what a Heavy Metal concert was supposed to be. There is a "documentary" that you can find in youtube about this festival
You would think this was the biggest concert attendance ever with 1.6 million , but apparently in 1994 Rod Stewart played to 3.4 million in Rio on the Cococabana Beach .
The thing with Rio though is that were a lot of people there literally for the beach. It's hard to estimate how many were actually there for the concert. The general idea is 2.5 - 3 million.
MTV reported the day after the concert that the attendance was estimate between 600,000 and a million .On the cover of the video that was released a year later said the attendance was 500,000 as did James Hetfield said on the Joe Rogan show
The Rolling Stones Played in Rio De Janeiro in 2006 in front of an estimated 1.5 million people. It was along a mile long stretch of beach. It was impossible to say how many actually witnessed the show because there were many people that were watching from hotel rooms that lined the beach as well as hundreds of boats and ships that were close enough to catch a view of the show. They also played in front of 500,000 in England at a free show in 1969. The Stones have been rocking since 1961 and are getting ready to tour in about a month. I am going to check them out at Aligiant Stadium where the Raiders play in Vegas in may. They released a brand-new album in late 2023. The lead singer and guitarist are both over 80 years old and still rocking. Although not a huge crowed by any means, you out to check out their new song that was performed live with Lady Gaga live called Sweet Sounds of Heaven. Its impressive that they can still bring the energy at their advanced age.
My Uncle worked for GM n they opened a dealership n Moscow n he went to oversee building n running of it, he was scared to death to go as a NOLA boy, but went n loved the ppl, he was there for 10yrs from 90-2000 n he went to this concert n said it was amazing, cuz the culture LOVED everything American 😉💞
I love your sentiment about seeing the flags from all over the world. Seeing all of the camaraderie and knowing the sociopolitical backdrop of that place at that time is kinda mind blowing. This concert was one of the last death rattles of the USSR. The Berlin Wall had fallen, the iron curtain was parting and the Cold War was all but over. This show was the West winning the most crucial part of the Cold War, the war of culture. Nukes and Capitalism didn’t topple the USSR, art did. If you take away people’s ability to freely express and experience art, they will yearn for that freedom more than food and water. If the USSR had allowed its citizens to freely be themselves without fear of imprisonment or worse, then the Cold War would have ended VERY differently. Instead, what we see is millions of people finally getting an emotional outlet they haven’t had in most of their lifetimes. That experience for a lot of them had to be nothing short of transcendent and that makes me so fucking happy to think about. Art is cool. Also, I’d love to see you peep some Silent Planet! Specifically “Panic Room”. As a hiphop head I think you’ll really dig the lyricism. Cheers!
This concert was shown on PPV back when it happened. I had a copy of it on VHS that I recorded from the PPV event. The first of its kind, really... US bands playing in Moscow after 40-odd years of hostility between countries..... was something we never thought we'd see. Remember, it was called the Cold War, because no direct armed conflicts happened between the US and USSR (there were some "Proxy" conflicts, but all "contained" to outside of either country). I've seen a LOT of history in my lifetime, and it would take quite a while to list them all.... but this was one of them. The Cold War had basically ended, and oppression in that part of the world lightened up. It's actually bizarre to see how far backwards the world has moved. There is a new "Cold War", with a "Proxy War" again at the forefront. Will we see this conflict expand into WWIII? We can at least hope that WWIII will not be a nuclear war, though that possibility exists, and is closer to reality than it's been in 35 years. It's almost maddening to witness, when peace was so close to being fully achieved back then.
Imagine if that crowd decided to go somewhere??? There is no stopping that avalanche of people. Incredible show... Cliff you've been there, there is something magical that happens when these snot nosed boys come out. You can feel the energy in your bones... Thank god I get to go again in about 2 months time...
A lot of people don't realize, that AC/DC was the headliner of this show. That is AC/DCs stage from the Razors Edge tour. Same year as the live at Donington video.
Very very real.... and at that time people didn't want to leave they wanted to celebrate... anxiety didn't exist in the way it does now. The war had just ended and music was used to unite ... artists were allowed to perform places they'd never been allowed before
I saw Metallica on this tour...at the LA coliseum they were one of 4 bands and I had FIELD "SEATS" When they hit the stage, the fences keeping the people in the risers and the rest of the upper seats from coming on to the field, the FENCES FOLDED DOWN FRO THE WEIGHT OF THE PEOPLE RUSHING THE FIELD AND STAGE!!!!! It was insane...the guy I went with is 6'7" he SCREAMED for me to grab his belt and HOLD ON....being so tall he could see better and got us to a spot where we wouldn't get trampled.....I have been to MANY concerts throughout the 80's 90' s and beyond but THIS album and THIS tour were OFF THE CHAIN!!! Great reaction!!! Peace out man!! Big HUGZZZZ

Thank you for reacting to Metallica. I’m telling’ ya-nothing like rock concerts! Crowds are insane.
Apparently it caused a measurable shake in the earth that was measured miles away. That’s a Rock Concert!!
You should check out when Metallica played in Antartica. Its EPIC!!!

That was beautiful! Like Opera nerd said during her analysis, the ground must be shaking under them.

Love the history behind this. Tx . Greetings from South Africa
🔥🔥🔥
A lot of people don't realize, that AC/DC was the headliner of this show. That is AC/DCs stage from the Razors Edge tour. Same year as the live at Donington video.
Very very real.... and at that time people didn't want to leave they wanted to celebrate... anxiety didn't exist in the way it does now. The war had just ended and music was used to unite ... artists were allowed to perform places they'd never been allowed before
The Rolling Stones -Out Of Control. Live in...I think RIO. ! 1 million plus !!!!
Metalica was one of the opening acts for AC/DC at this concert.
I’m not a metal fan but there are 3 songs of theirs I love. This is number 1 on my list
Big HUGZZZZ
The 3 million was Rod Stewart New Years Eve concert

This is what I'm talking about. Diving into classic rock.
