  • We all know the term Cherry Picker, because everyone loves cherries. Around hear we have birds, bugs, squirrels, racoons, bears, and humans that all compete for this trees precious fruit. So the bark of the cherry has to be flexible enough to handle all the re-distribution of weight through its season. Sometimes though the bears get a little too eager and bends a tree more then it can recover, just like the one in this video. Thats when its time for us to make use of the precious bark...
This is the journey of a young #herbaljedi who loves to gorge on wild cherries and is excitement to share in the bounty of the great cherry bark medicine.
Cherry loves to hang out near the end of the path or side of the forest. They are happy to give fruit to all that would partake. Ever looking for the opportunity to plant their seed in a nice pile of warm fertilizer. In doing so this tree has gained much territory and fame, leading to its use as a medicine also spreading to many cultures.
Traditionally Cherry bark was used for centuries by the First Nations people, Chinese and Japanese, and has been adopted into many recipes in western herbalism. It is best known for its astringent tonic and sedative qualities. Helping calm irritation and inflammation of the lungs, throat, digestive track and skin. Especially when there is a cherry like red colour to the tissues.
Wild Cherry Bark contains tannins, flavanoids, bitter cyanogens, musalage, resins and volitile oils
Some of the common uses for wild cherry bark include:
Headaches, fever, coughs, bronchitis, congested phlegm, lung troubles, whooping cough, tuberculosis, sore throat.
It is a tonic stimulant for the digestive system and liver and has a slight relaxing of action on the nervous system and blood pressure.
Also Cherry Bark was commonly used externally as a wash for skin sores and eye inflammation.
    Harvesting:
Cherry Bark is best harvested in the Spring and Fall when the sugar content is higher in the bark. In the Winter its bitter compounds become more distinct. As you see in this video it can be harvested in long strips, which should be taken from side branches or a tree that is on its way out.
    Preparation:
Cherry Bark can be prepared in many ways, though is often made into a strong decoction tea, (simmered for 1-5 hours at 1 part bark : 20-30 parts water) and drank or used externally as a wash.
Or as a stronger decoction (1part : 4-10 parts) and turned into a tincture or syrup by adding alcohol or sweetener to help preserve and drive the medicine deeper into the tissues.
    Precautions:
Cherry Bark similar to apple, plum, apricot and peach, contains small amounts of cyanide in the bark, so should not be consumed for long periods of time in large amounts.

I did Botany at Uni but there is so much that I do not know and need to learn and this is so awesome and informative. Mostly I learnt what goes on inside a plant that relies on lab work and we didn't really learn much about herbalism which is utterly fascinating. Everything we need is in the forest and nature so it is really not very clever to build and destroy. It is not progress at all but hopefully through the internet with videos like this and other channels of a like mind more people will start to understand how incredible nature is and more will join the movement to reverse some of the damage already done and so we can move forward in a positive way. I love these videos they are so powerful and rich in information.🏞🌾🌄🌿🌼🌴🌻

Now could you just use the tips of branches to achieve the same medicinal benefit? Or does the bark need to be stripped like that?

Cool video. I'm about to harvest some bark myself. In the spring I crushed up the black cherries (no seeds) into alcohol so maybe I can use that to tincture the bark? However I've heard you definitely don't want the bark to ferment because that releases the cyanide. Do you think this would happen in the tincturing process?

I wonder by "wild cherry" is this all sprices of cherries? In GA we have wild black cherry znd choke cherries. The inner barks are about the same. Also not a cherry but speaking of inner bark dogwood is uncommon here too.

Can you use the bark of a red cherry tree or do you have to use only wild cherry? Do all cherry tree bark carry the medicine?

What about harvesting a bunch of resin instead of the bark? Easier on the tree?(as long as you are taking too much of it right off the wounds the tree is trying to heal) Same medicinal properties for the most part? Probably not as much tanins, with more volatile compounds...

I found your video because someone just asked if he could take the bark off my weeping cherries. Said he would buy it from me but I don't want him hurting my trees. Now I'm afraid someone will come and strip them.

    Yarrow:
You talked about the cherry tree but you did not say anything about Choke Cherry (P. virginiana). It is supposed to be poisonous, isn't it?

Unsure of the bark, but choke cherries are not poisonous. Check out Sam Thayer’s books for the full rundowns.

Choke cherry bark is used in the same way as the cherry tree he is using, as a bronchial relaxant.

Just now I'm outside cutting firewood it's black cherry there's sap chunks all over the bark. I have a terrible toothache the worst physical pain of my life has been tooth pain. I was mumbling and thinking come on man I don't need this god this hurts god I got nothing to make this pain go away funny because the cure to my pain was stuck right onto my left shoulder from carrying logs I only put it on my tooth because I couldn't remember that stuff that kills cherry trees all the time, and saw the sap had medical uses as well! I'm nowhere near any other relief it would have sucked SO bad my day was done before I put that sap in my cheek Ive never been to church but heads up your prayers might be getting answered your just not seeing always seeing how

So it kills the tree. So cut it down then strip it. Don't just run around stripping all the trees and killing them. unless it's life or death. Oh so now everyone strips the bark , then no more trees!! 😕 Wow. Cool.😞
