You can't compare two different processors that way. When you're comparing with load times it's more of a hard drive test than a CPU test.

Great comparison! You really know your stuff. It looks like the Intel Core i3 is an approvement over the older Intel Pentium. If I were to buy one of those, I would probably go for the i3. You were very helpful :)
The hard drives have everything to do with the start-up time, the difference in start up speed between a good fast HDD and a slow HDD is massive (and on how much space is being used within them). RAM doesn't effect start-ups too much unless the ram is super slow nor does the processor, it's mostly to do with HDD speeds, that's why SSD are boss with boot ups with anything.

Thanks for answering the "gamers" part since I do play WoW and Ultima Online. Since I'm so use to Pentium. Thanks for the vid and clarifies some confusion of choosing a system even tho the comments below says otherwise but it points me to the right direction.
If you want performance these day you have to buy i5 or i7 with 4gb ram+. About intel pentium inside i can say that's a very good processor (but not better than i3) i bought my laptop with it 6 years ago and it's still works like a charm.

Just get the Pentium, or Celeron.
And if you really need more horsepower (CPU and GPU that is) get an AMD A-Series. (A6 5350m is there current budget model. Don't be confused by the So called A4 and A6 1450 and 5200 models which are rebadged E-series chips and use inferior and much much slower GPU's and Jaguar cores.)

Lucky though if it were me I would have gotten a worthy GPU rather than a crippled one. Like a GTX 470 or GTX 560. (Or preferably a HD 7790, a GPU from a company that isn't terrible and doesn't constantly lie and abuse their customers).

This is painful to watch. Good review. Terrible comparison. For example, when talking about "graphics" you are looking at a picture on both computers and you say the i3 is slightly better. The processor does not make a non-moving picture look better. It will RENDER faster and therefore, if you were playing a game or something along those lines, THEN it will look better. Otherwise, you may as well compare the screens rather than the processors. That was just one of the things killing me during the vid. lol

I have a motherboard that has two ports for two separate Pentium 4 processors. I have a 4.1 compatibility with one P4 3GHZ HT and I have a 7.9 Compatibility with Both. (Max for Windows 7). I also have 9.8 Compatibility for windows 8, I can even play some of the most advanced and most requiring games, such as Alan Wake, Tomb raider and many other games at the best performance. with two AGP 4650 cards. I find it amazing that the Pentium 4 processor can still hold par with no overclocking.
Install SSHD in the old laptop (pentium) , it will boot faster (30 sec)

Processor is not a big issue in a computer except video rendering. For example if processor is the seats of a vehicle ssd is the engine of the vehicle.

The thing I hated was waiting the circling cursor to disappear...
I used to own a system with a pentium t4200 dual core processor along with gma 4500m integrated graphics, but now i'm upgrading to a new system with a intel core i3-3120m 3rd gen dual core processor along with intel hd 4000 graphics.
Basically the reason I5, baytrail or I7extream are the only Intel CPU worth there price is i5 saves power while delivering the highest performance on low wattage board as has the best single thread vs mutithread score of any CPU. Baytrail is the cheapest core tecknology CPU with second best single vs multi thread while also saving power. i7extream has the most cache/cores and virual threads per dollar and is the best gaming CPU possible if you have a shit ton of money.

While RAM is the first thing to boost in a computer, hard drive performance makes a BIG difference in start-up speed. Compare your pentium machine after putting a solid state disk in it. It will blow the i3 away on start-up time. That doesn't mean it will play your video game faster, however. It simply makes data access faster and more efficient to the hard drive. Disks vary on performance due to age and design. Your 500 GB could simply operate faster than the 640 GB by good margins.

I'm staying with my Intel Pentium. I have the time to wait 3 seconds more on my startup I'm not paying around $100 dollars for a small bit a framerate drops. Take that "smart technology" away from the i3 and you got your trusty old Pentium that's been since Windows XP.

Start up test and application test are more dependent on the hard drive side. CPU is not a big factor.

Start up test doesn't really depends on CPU, It depends more on Hard Disc Drive (HDD) or Solid State Drive (SSD).

My new laptop that I am using now has a Core i3 in it and it's at 1.9 GHz, and it's MUCH better than my old laptop with the Pentium B960.

The pentium is really good for a bugdet pc or laptop. But unlike the core series, there is no hyperthreading, so when playing games, you will lose a few frames.
GPU, Memory Speed, Memory Amount, HDD, CACHE, Motherboard Architecture.... there are so many factors that this comparison neglects.........
Pentium's fine for gaming as long as it's a Haswell/Ivy bridge and has 3.0 ghz above. It's more based on the Graphics card, really. I'd recommend a Nvidia Geforce GT 640, it's a pretty good price for the card, at 80 dollars. Can run BF3 at high.
I have one the the new 4 gen intel pentiums and i can see that the gt640 gets better performance with my i7. Although it still performs pretty good. I would recommend maybe an r9 240 or and gt630 instead

I just installed a Samsung SSD in my L750 with a I3@2.1Ghz because my original HDD died. What a huge difference, the computer as a whole is much faster it seems, boot up is 13 seconds.

So the HDD were different size ? The larger HDD with the same rpm and cache size will always be faster as the data is packed more dense and the arm moves less, you should also take into consideration the platter technology as well, let say an one platter 1TB versus a two platter 1TB, the one platter will be faster and less noisy.
I myself just upgrade my ten year old AMD Athlon which I was happy with to a 7 year old Pentium 4. CPU speed now really a marketing gimmick for most users.

The i3 has a dual core quad thread, only meaning it supports hyper threading, which makes the i3's architecture better than the pentium, also meaning faster, that and most pc games require a dual core or multi thread, or even quad cores, and quad thread being closest to quad core makes it a better gaming cpu, than the pentium,

Are they both on fresh installs?
Are they running the exact same o/s, Win7 ultimate x64 for example??
Are they both running the same background services with the same o/s features enabled and disabled?
Are they both using the exact same HD?
Any one of these being different can make a difference in speed.
A good video but its not the definitive test that some commentators appear to think it is.

Problem is you really need to invest in a tripod. If the Pentium is 2.5 GHZ and the I3 is 2.0 GHZ that makes some difference. How fast is the ram one could be 1300 MHZ while other is 1600 MHZ, how fast is the hard drive one could be 5400 rpm while other is 7200. The problem I have with speed test everything needs to be the same or not a fair test both need same hard drive size, speed, same video card, same ram size, speed etc only difference should be the processor. Running a benchmark would have been helpful as well. If your going to game get a laptop with I7 dual or quad core is better, 8 gigs of ram, dedicated video card and use a solid state drive.
So this particular pentium has a 2mb cache The i3 has like 4 mb cache. Some of the newer pentiums are a lot better than this. The pentium is a 2 core proceesor and can only handle 2 threads vs the 4 threads on the i3. When you talk about comparing systems you need more information. For instance are the screens the same resolution? What motherboard is used? is it the same? If so, what BIOS version is used. Peace Out.

The b9 family are i3's with disabled feature's. Example b950 is a i3 2310m if you use aida64 it will say that the b950 has hyper threading but it is disabled the i3 had ht enabled. The i3 is 2.10ghz so is the b950, so on and so on some uk site's have the b950 listed as hd3000 like the i3 instead of 2000, because the only difference is the driver's to enable those feature's. You can do a comparison b970 vs i3 2330m they have the same spec's. They where probably meant for intel upgrade card's
if you put a SDD on the pentium, the startup will be faster. System startup deppends also from the hard disk's rpm and the SO configuration, couse windows has a profile loader, to load "faster" de system
It really depends on how you are going about playing minecraft!
If you are just playing the game normally then it should be fine :)
But if you are going to mod the game, Download lots of texture packs or Worlds then it probably wont run that smooth. i3 should normally run both of these ways of playing, But you will need a decent Video/Graphics card and if you're going to mod then i suggest a bigger hard drive, 750 Gb to 1tb should be fine

If I were you, I would get the latest one which is the i7 because you might as well spend your money on the best one so you don't have to upgrade a year later because you needed more for your work, etc
I can guarantee anyone here, that the i3's architecture is going to dominate the Pentiums architecture.

Pentium can be good for old games or new games or quiet greedy graphical softwares with low profile if there is a mid-range GPU like G x30m or G x40m with it. But it's quiet limited. Today, a lot of i3 low profile ( ****U version) seem bad with less than 2 GHz. Then, Get i5 or better with GTX ***M for games with a lot of graphical options and very greedy softwares.
I have a HP G6-2221-SF with a pentium B980 and HD 7670m, I can't run games like COD or even Minecraft full enabled graphics. Then, I recently get an Aspire V3 with i5 4210U and GT840M to play these games.

There are old Pentiums and new Pentiums. You have an extremely old one that's trounced by these. The new ones are literally Core i3s without hyperthreading. Both CPUs here are Sandy Bridge.

the models of cpus mater if both are ivy bridge at same clock speed they will perform almost the same, unless you are using an application is coded to us multiple threads. if you are gaming you can get the same performance in most cases, because must games dont use hyper-threading .

your takeing a 90nm chip vs a smaller 55nm/40nm chip its going to be a lil better in less heat out put power and will be more snappy but im very happy with my 3ghz pentium dual core it plays far cry 3 at 20min to 40 max frames at 1280x720 mid low settings

you never told us what gen this processor are . can generation real effect them . depending on what generation u got of i3 it to be dual core like the intel Pentium making i3 and Pentium the game just different clock speed and maybe hyperthreading .

is not intel 3 it is Itanium 3. i in i3, i5 , i7 stands for Itanium, btw what might make pentium slower boot time because its hard drive is slower due to age. age in hard drives degrade performance
Nope,while you are correct in the fact that it is not intel three, it is an i3, there is no such thing as an intel three, but itanium is a completely different architecture that has nothing to do with intels x86 cpu lines.
