How to begin in surface design - create motifs for repeating patterns
HTML-код

- The very first step in surface pattern design is creating textile motifs - separate elements for your repeat unit. How should you approach it? Use Procreate on iPad or Photoshop? Do you have to know Adobe Illustrator? Paint in watercolor or maybe draw with a pencil? What are the art options for designing fabric, wallpaper and stationery? How many motifs do you need? How exactly should you arrange them? That's what we are talking about in this video!

I like your videos! I am a textile design student. I am sixty years old, but I returned to school. I will graduate next year with my BFA in Textile design. I love your channel! Thank you. Sincerely, Maria
Thank you so much, Maria! I'm so excited for you!! Wish I could go back to college all over again :)
Oh wow! Your comment is soo inspiring. I would love to hear more about your journey into training at a mature age . I’m in my early forties and i felt it was too late for me to go into the time designing. Are you from the uk?
Thank you for this video Darya! As a longtime artist branching out into surface pattern design, information like this is so helpful and encouraging!!!
You are so welcome!
I love your aesthetic and your really pretty, I just watched your video for the first time and its amazing.
Thank you Darya!. I'm just beginning to explore surface pattern design and you made things much clearer.
It's great to hear it Teresa! ♥️
You have a wonderful conversational style of communicating. You shared a lot of information, but I wasn't overwhelmed because you communicate so well. Thanks for that. I watch a lot of RUclipsrs and so many talk fast or too slow or way too much. :)
Aw, thank you so much, that's the sweetest comment, it makes me so happy 🙏🏼 I appreciate you!
Darya, thank you so much! I was equal parts excited and lost, when it came to patterns. Thanks to you, I now have an idea of where to start❤
P.S. your digital cats rock so hard
Thanks so much Alyona! 😺 Glad the video was helpful!
I work offline using very old copies of Illustrator and Photoshop. I can scan my motifs, convert my doodled line motifs to vectors and create repeat patterns. I appreciate your advice not to convert watercolor motifs to vector. Agreed they are huge files, better used in Photoshop
❤ thankyou ❤ new subscriber 🇨🇦
So glad the video was helpful and that you've found what works for you!! 💞 Love 🇨🇦!!
I really enjoyed watching this video and the birds pattern is beautiful ❤
I love Procreate. I usually draw the motifs on it and finish the pattern on illustrator. I would also like to try to digitize my watercolor but I don’t have photoshop yet.
So glad you enjoyed the video and thanks for the compliment! I usually take my Procreate motifs to finish up on the computer as well! 🩵

Hi, Thanks for the informative video. Can you also share the process to digitize traditional art or how to get them printed on fabric
This was very helpful ❤
So happy to hear it, thank you! 🤗
slayed
You have a good way to explain l would like from you to talk about surface design with fresco
Thanks a lot for your kind words! I've only played with Fresco a little but I'll see what I can do!
Love this video! thank you so much!!! I am wondering if you can use a DSLR camera instead of scanner.... thank you in advance for your repply
Yes, it's possible - just take the photos in good lighting and be careful not to tilt the camera because it can skew the images. I would also try to play with the settings to see if the photo can be 300 dpi resolution.
I personally haven't had luck with this method, but I've heard other designers have.
Like to learn more about motifs and how do you use it
Thank you dear Darya❤
I really like your video❤
Your name, in my country means "sea"
(Darya in Persian language means sea)
That is beautiful, thank you for sharing! I love sea 😊🌊
Thanks for a helpful overview of styles, mediums and techniques. I am a fused glass artist that wants to create a repeating pattern from photos of glass art. So many repeat pattern tutorials used simpler designs. Can you point me to something that might help? Thanks!!!
It's hard to tell without seeing the artwork, but I'm guessing something like this should work: ruclips.net/video/ZNBv3Cgx66Q/видео.htmlsi=c21yxrlUfUQiR2KB
@@PatternTalentbyDaryaKarenski Thanks!
Hey , can u pls make a video on the process of how to derive motifs from an inspiration. I dont want to copy motifs from pintrest so. Wat process to use ?
That's a great question, thank you! I'd say, gather inspiration and create original art with your preferred medium. Don't trace anybody else's art or photography, but rather use the traditional method of drawing/painting from life - look at the objects and draw them in your style.
For example, if I need to make a pattern with sharks, I will collect 5-10 photos and illustrations of sharks to look at as a reference - as a Pinterest board or Instagram saved folder. Then I will sketch them in my notebook making sure I have 3-5 different angles - by looking at the pictures and drawing, simplifying, stylizing them as I go. I also pick my own color palette.
So by the end I have a set of original motifs that look different enough from the reference. Hope it helps!
What you prefer traditional art or digital for textile ?? Do pepole like traditional art on thair clothes?
I personally prefer traditional art, but people enjoy all sorts of things on their clothes!
hi thank you for sharing, that's really helpful. i saw there was a book that you were showing in the video about editing the photograph, could you please share the name? and can i ask for some other pattern books for editing pattern skill that you recommend? thank you so much!
